So...for the first time i'm now using a pre-mix torch. I find fuming to be much different. First...it is way faster and far more agressive...silver fumes very fast. Thats a bit of a challenge for me...

O.K. heres the question...why do the colors i'm getting from gold seem slightly muddy? It still looks nice..but with the surface mix the colors were more bright and shiney. I think maybe i'm fuming with too much heat. I'm just not used to a pre-mix flame at all. Any ideas???

I'd post a pic...but my friend has my cam.

The right flame for fuming on a pre-mix is smaller and sharper (more oxy) than on a surface mix. Just experiment with it a little more and you'll get used to the difference.

I just hooked up my 3a as a fuming torch a few days ago, and I couldn't believe the difference. My gold seems to be working fine, better than fine compared to my surface mix. My only problem is that the oxy pressure for my phantom is making the flame super sensitive on the 3a.

But yeah, like Nemesis said, a very small, sharp flame is what I'm getting good results with. I'm using an OX2 tip. I tried my OX5, but the flame gets too distorted.

I would splice it into your centerfire line down the line from the reg so you can leave the lynx on and help out with all the extra pressure.

I tryed a much smaller flame...def oxidized. And still the same results. Then i realized maybe its because I ran out of gold and trying to fume with a pin head sized amount.

Hey man I hope the torch is working out for you. Always takes some time getting use to something new, anyway here is how I set torch. Propane at 7 lbs oxy at 35-40. The amount of gold for that torch can be super small and it will still fume great with gold, but the flame needs to be super small and incredibly oxidized (not hissing like mad but pretty close). You will figure it out after some experimentation, but if you are popping off gold or sputtering it to non existence your flame is probably too big. I always keep my gold on turbo or ninja rod because the cobalts can take more heat than clear. Post up some pictures of the flame and I will give you some input, Also if you need some gold hit me up and I will send you some chunks of the good maple leaf.
Peace, Ian

Hey whats up Ian...yeah the torch is great. It rages like a beast and the candles are perfect. i couldn't be happier with it. The pre-mix is def dif for me. I 'm getting used to it now. I'm not sure if i like it better than a sm but I def like it.

What do you have for gold because I def need some...I'll pm ya.

I'd post some pics but my friends got my camera for a bit...so guess not. I think I just need to really turn that flame down and fume.

Also I like to use quartz rod to fume with but i see what you mean with the cobalt and ninja.
