Hey this is a continueation of "My First Hammer and First Sherlock" thread.
i asked to get the name changed a while ago but never happened so im going to close that thread and start this one.
these are a couple live pics of me finishing a dry hammer with a bridge and with a big ass tube implosion marble.
ill post the finished product along with another hammer tomorrow.

I attempted a few honeycomb pendants. I think i was going wrong with them because i was suposed to flip them to get the honeycomb look. sothey kind of look like imploded honeycombs, or just imploded blobs.
HELP!?!?!

Coming along quick man,nice. Those are implosions,not honeycombs, a honey comb is basically a reversed implosion if that makes sense. Try this,Either fume some tube real heavy on the INSIDE & close up OR coilpot a striking color like amber purple,multi,etc. Blow this into a THIN bubble & dot,the size of your clear dots will determine what it looks like,for pendants I do them tiny & they look real tight or you can do them big too,they produce different looks,it's up to you ,try a bunch. Then once you do your dots,condense the bubble back down slowly,until it's solid,be sure to condense some clear glass above the pattern too for a lense. Now you have a honeycomb,DONT flip it,if you do flip it & start with clear instead of fume or color tube & use color dots ,it's a tube implosion. Detach from tube,back,finish.

yeah i only flipped one of them cause they were implosions, not honeycombs, like you said and the one i flipped looks like a 3D honeycomb kinda.
ill have to try the coil potting. i havnt had much luck with my coil potting but then again ive only tried it once

It's all good man. Coil potting is simple,for a pendant just get a 12mm heavy blowtube & take your rod of color. Keep the color rod in the flame & the blowtube slightly out & just coil your color on the end into a gather,keep it hollow in the center like you building off the tube,then when you have enough glass close it up with color. Then melt this down into a molten form & puff lightly & shape to even the wall,heat again & puff into ball,for sections keep it thick,for honeycombs blow it out real thin.

im in the middle of trying to find a better price for oxy cus im sick of paying $48 for a fillup without delivery for a K-tank.
so i wont have pics for a few days :(

ps is liquid oxy mostly a good idea if your using more than one torch full time?

if your paying 48 a fill then you should be able to save a ton of money on a liquid tank. i go through one about every 6-8 weeks on my mirage and i have a sergent a friend plays on a few hrs a week. but its costing me 125 delivered and 400 a year for rent. i was paying 35 a fill on k tanks and im saving hundreds a month. and if your looking in to getting a bigger torch it will save you alot

liquid oxy is good if you can use it. The liquid turns to gas which is under intense pressure. If you don't use that gas the tank releases that pressure, therefore blowing out the oxygen your not using. I doubt the bobcat could hang with LOX by itself (meaning I think you would be wasting a lot of oxy.) But if you had a bigger torch or a shopmate and you can run 2 torches LOX is the way to go.

yeah the bobcat usually lasts me about a week and a half with being on it for like an average 3 hours a day.
but im planning on upgrading to a phantom or something and my dad might keep my bobcat.
so when the time comes i will go liquid. but i still need to find a better deal for k-tanks in the mean time.
i've spent over 200 bucks on oxy since ive started, which is only like 3 months

Unless you plan on buying a bigger torch within the next year, I'd seriously consider a couple oxy cons. For $560 shipped you could have all the o2 you'll ever need for that thing. Will run a lynx too and most folks around here, including the gtt guys, will tell you that it's much hotter than the bobcat and will still run efficiently on the cons. So you can still step up and have free gas too. Just a thought, but I know it's saved me a shitload of money so far.

Those fish hooks are pretty cool. Is that marley in that implosion or did you make the cane?

I wouldn't recommend oxy cons. I had a total of 5 ex-15s and they don't quite output what their spec is (I tested with an o2 analyser and flow meter). Even if they did reach their spec for output, you are only getting about 90% o2, which created a dreadful reducing flame unless you really set your torch to a very oxy flame (of which you likely can't because you are limited to the output of your oxy cons). They can definately save you a few bucks in the long run, but the quality of flame ruins the deal imo.

yeah thought about that GP. but i do plan on bumpin up to a phantom or redmax. but i mean i will be using the center fire (or top fire if i get the Max) for MOST of my work so i could still get a oxy con and just use a K-tank for the outer flame. and the implosion cane is momka marley.

and Michael, what torch are you running to have 5 ex-15's running?
i would think the cost of electricity is running you into the ground man.
but ive always been told oxy cons are good for the small flame of prettymuch any torch. but everyone has their own opinion.

Chris - the colours are NS dark orange crayon, and i THINK NS Butterscotch?

Crip - its actually Borostix Orange (not sure the actual name) and a colour that i forget the name but its like a green version of Disco Sparkle. O yeah its Northstar (I think)

and yeah RG, the i/o tool is workin pretty sweet. i can pull 2-3 good size spoons with only using 8 (i think) 6 inch 3mm fumed clear rods.
geting them into the blank has been the fun part. i need to get something that will hold them in place while I slide them in the tube, but wont burn off or be hard as hell to get off. I've tried elastic bands, which burned off, and hose clamps, which arent very inconvenient to get off when your trying to be quick about things.

any suggestions??

Thats why I got rid of the one I had and thought they would be great on a lathe or what not but using the one I had made me fell a little odd Like I needed one more hand or somthing. Every thing I would think of kept leading me back to stick stack. I know the tools have there advantages. some have a built in slot on the bottom side maybe you could cut a grove in a piece of grahite and drill a hole in the center and slip over the handle.

well i mean the tool has little holes in the bottum where the rods go, as if the rods should go inside and be held there while you work with the tool. ive been using 3mm, so maybe ill pick up some 2mm. maybe those will slide in and solve my problems.

That colored tube is fun, isn't it?

Lookin' good man, consistency too. Are those punty marks on the front of the bowl?

Try this with the different tube colors - these have been selling well.

Take a section of your colored tube and fume the shit outta it. Different levels for different effects - of course. Starting at either end, wrap it in 6mm clear so that you have an encased fumed point. Melt it all smooth, fill in any gaps in the clear and shape your piece. Should be able to do it on the bobcat in about 30 mins or so. Gives you a nice pattern - got a few pics of them in my work thread - check it out. Works the same as trapping air in a blow in, but gives you a little line with some bubbles here and there to throw some patterns for you instead of just a dot here and there.

yeah those are punty marks... sometimes i forget to polish it, or sometimes it needs more plishing but hard to tell if its good enough.
i was also freakin out because of how shocky this shit is haha. i was workin on the bowl then let it kiln while i did another piece then went back to the first one while the second one was garaging and the piece cracked clean right at the connection of the blow tube and the piece.

try an encalmo style with the colored tubing, stack different colored sections, blue, amber, blue, amber or some funky jazz like that, easy way to practice sectional work and it looks kinda nifty as well..

I really have grown to like the china tube it rarely cracks on me. The black is good stuff I really like it all. The amber is becoming my least fav right now at first it was my fav but I have worked so much of the other stiffer china glass the amber seems like snot! I always step back into amber tube slow after working blue if you don't you will be all over the place.

Oh by the way things I learned with the china BL.

1. alway's and I mean always clean it inside and out! Most of the time its dirty esp if let sit open in your shop.

2. Work it hot and try to get you work done without unessasry re heat's.

3. Plan work accordingly as it does not like garage forever, Some get away with murder by sleeving and being pro lampworkers. If you lose a piece it happens don't let it kill you.

Snake - the green is ns forest green and the background is chinese amber tubing.
ive been using some chinese coloured tubing for my backgrounds. gives it a lot of weight and background. i like heavy pendants :P

Loving the pendy's. You need some help w/ your welds...
1. Let the areas your not working cool, just be careful not to hit them with the flame and shock em. This will allow you to concentrate on the welds. As long as your colors are worked in good and no sharp edges you shouldnt have to worry about cracks generally.
2. Dont ever cold seal your blow tube to the mouthpiece on a piece bigger than a spoon, to much risk that it'll fall off.
3. welding: work 1 side at a time with a hot thin flame, give little puffs to even out with rest of piece.
4. Try not to get the entire weld soft at once unless you need to, the less working on the weld the less stress on the glass.
5. you might consider blowing your holes a little bigger where the weld will go, I blow them out just a little bigger than I want the weld to be, I just let things condense and flow to where I want them during welding.

your silver fume is coming out really nice, I have trouble sometimes, either over or under fuming.

um well if im doing iso i pop open the tube, fume with a reducing flame a bit, hit it with a oxydizing flame then with a reducing flame again to get more colours out, thats what someone told me to do...

and i kind of get the same results with outside work.
when i w/r it almost seems like the fume burns off completely. or that im draging the fume off haha

When your working an area thats fumed( for instance a wrap and wrake over fume) use a slightly reduced flame and the fume wont burn off.

compression in like imploding but using a rod. imploding is using a tube to get the design inside your piece, if that makes sense.
and ill also have to double check the colours im using for you, Ivebeen.

mk so i had to take a few days off to do stuff around the house. but i played around with some honeycombs , flowers, turtles and my first "PIMPIN VOORHEES" face pipes. very inspiring stuff :P so i had to try them.

any advice on how to make my faces more realistic please do share with the class :)

ok so heres new shaped sherlys, a big ass turtle pendant
and bubbler that broke right between the bowl and the can RIGHT WHEN I WAS FINISHING THE MOUTHPIECE!! GGRRRRRRRR
so i just added some clear to the can. it looks janky as nuts but whatever.
and last but not least my first mini bonger. its not a slider though, the bowl was hard as hell to melt in so this looks janky as well :P

Finally starting to get the hang of these. but not i want to figure out how to get not so many swirls. EI like 10 swirls in the entire pendant, instead of a million like i have. I guess less spinning :)

really like this thing. u can put a bit of water in it and lie it down and the water doesnt spill because of how i made the bowl curved.

China pink is fun stuff, works pretty smooth. Looks like klingon blood when it gets hot.

That bub with the wigwags is the shit!!! Really like the blue and orange, prolly my fave color combo. I little tip I would suggest to even out your bowl stamping, and keep them from sagging, is to gather more glass for your bowl heads. If it's thicker, when you stamp it, it makes it nice and even, and doesn't sag down on the outside rim of it. Keeps it nice and even. Other than that, you're shit is right the fuck on!! Merry xmas!

Davis - a year and a couple months

Dorkee - its actually inside gold fumed. but ive used china purple, which is prettymuch a really lite shade purple, and it looks prettymuch the exact same as gold fumed.

and yes it is silver and gold dot implosion. one of my favorite designs for sure. I actually taught myself how to do it while trying something else... I keep making them and they keep amazing people so i guess im doing something right haha

FGA - thanks for the tip. I havnt been making many pipes lately so i was a bit off till i got back in to the groove a bit more.

Borobot - with the plugs i usually just start with a certain sized rod and stretch one half of it and make it look funky. maybe ill make a youtube vid monday on how i make them.

I just made myself some that are (i think) are 8mm clear rod and in the stretched part, if that makes sense, and the tip looks like a diamond. i just heated tiny spots and flattened with a graphite pad
