"stupid is as stupid does."

i just signed on to teach the fall concentration there this year. i'm pretty excited, it's five days a week for eight weeks running Sept 20th through Dec 20th. look into work/study, it cuts the tuition in half in exchange for a 15 - 20 hour work week.

i wouldn't trade it for the world. i got nearly everything i know from Emilio there in 99' during a spring concentration. met one of my best friends in the world there and got into too much trouble to mention while i have a girlfriend.

not saying i'll be able to provide anywhere near the experience Emilio can give to a student, but i'm sure gonna fucking try.

I'd love to take some classes down there, but it's hard enough to get away from home for a weekend, much less a week or more...

I dont think it is very hard to get on the work study program. when i was there 1/2 of my class was in the program. They had to work shifts for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Didnt seem like that bad of a gig, but a few guys said they wish they would have just paid the tuition, so they didnt miss some demos ect...

true and true,

most people in a session at concentration will be on work study. in fact, you might feel a bit out of place if you're not..

same with missing demo's. a lot of peeps are on food duty since there are three meals a day prepared, served, and cleaned up after by work study folks. that means you cut out early from class if your shift is prep, cook, or laying out the buffet. if you're pots, dish room, or cleaning you'll tend to come back to class 45 minutes later than the peeps with other shifts.

teachers will usually work around the work study folks schedules.

i don't remember people having three shifts a day, certainly not everyday. usually two each day if i remember right.

i'll be posting a class description and an outline of the 8 week course pretty soon here. i confirmed today with Paul Stankard and Emilio Santini, they both will be coming to Penland during the concentration as visiting artists. Emilio will probably stick around for 2 days and do some goblet stuff. Paul will come for an evening and a full day. with him we'll take a hike in the surrounding Appalacians to survey the botanical offerings, then he'll do a paperwieght.

i'll be contacting other folks to try and persuade them to come too..

hey all,

the course catalog for the 2009 fall concentrations hasn't gone to print yet, but you can go to penland.org to look at past concentration descriptions and get info on the application process. i believe the deadline for work study applications is the first week of August.

like i said, i'll be looking to try and get some more folks to come as visiting artists during the class. i don't have much per diem money left, but am looking into a separate grant specifically for this purpose.

anyone who is interested is welcome to propose a visiting artist lecture or demo as well. otherwise anyone that might be passing through the area during the duration of the class is equally welcome to come by to hang out, watch demos, and whatever.

just bring beer..

hey JB
i'm really open to any perspective or demo within flamework. be it a butterfly marble or how you came to that technique or how it serves your aspirations or technical virtuosity etc.

the main goal is to bring in varied experiences and varied technical offerings.

i will be considering many different aspects of the class over the next few months in order to plan and time everything. send me pics and bio and whatever else and we'll keep in touch.

penland is having their open house this saturday the 28. they open the studios and give people a chance to sample all the mediums. you can make a bead in the flame shop or a tumbler or a paperweight in the hot shop. if you are around and have not been to penland its a good time to check it out.
matte, thanks for the foot holder! i intend on putting together a demo proposal for your class. thanks for your consideration and enthusiasm for our medium.

Mr. jim Jerry

i'ts a shame you won't be able to make the concentration this fall. if you come through Penland on a visit we will "invent" a new technique in your honour called the "tie dye" and post it all around the interweb until it's more common then the wrap and rake. and you will get all the credit.

I would be honored to have a new technique named after me especially if i can steal it entirely from the master. You should come to RIT b4 the GAS conference and get some grabs, and obviously Funk the Junk in Roc City.

JIMjerry

p.s. i will be in penland this summer...so maybe we will see each other there?
