I'm trying to figure out what to do with this stuff... It's pretty delicate so a lot of my ideas have failed so far. I have a feeling that nobody will be able to figure this out. If you have any ideas on what to do with it or guesses of what it is post and let me know. I have a shoebox full of this "stuff" so I have a lot to play around with.

I would guess that you bought it in tucson. it's a commen metal, and yup, i know what it is. I won't spoil it for every one.
i would think that it could be re-struck (flame or kiln)? you think?
is it crystalized titanium? titanium can look and act very similar, as far far as what to do with it I have no idea.... you could grind it up and pretend it was fairy dust??? or snort it..... :lick:

haha! Good guesses but nobody is even close so far. I know it looks really metallic but it is not a metal. I am starting to wonder if I am the first human to harvest this intergalactic rainbow matter? :puzzled::mushroom::alien:
I wonder if Doug can figure this one out. He seems to know something about everything.....

It looks alot like the type of foil they sell in craft stores for leafing. The company we've used before has it this color but I forgot what it was called. They also make gold, silver and bronze in color. We always called it "oil slick".

it's not bismuth....
looks like Ti slag from a furnace...
Could be iridized slag from a lava flow?
Greymatter Glass

the colors aren't as good in this picture, but it looks like this stuff we'd find in fresh lava flows in Hawaii:

I have to say it could be rainbow hematite also after finding this picture:
http://minerals.caltech.edu/COLOR_Causes/Physical_Process/hematite_Georgia.jpg
whatever it is, it _IS_ metal. It's metal that causes that iridescence... no matter what base it's on. i.e. we consider dicro to be glass, but it's metal on glass that makes it dichro.

I'm positive it isn't bismuth even though bismuth looks more like it than the picture of the crap I posted. :D
Both bismuth (top) and hematite (bottom) have a very dark base...shiny gray almost black. My next guess is some form of bornite (middle pic)
This is fun...I love rocks...we'll just jack the thread and all post pictures of pretty rocks as punishment for not telling us what it is already.

I'm having fun reading all these guesses, but still nobody is correct. Here are a few hints: It is not a rock and if it does contain metal it is a very small amount. It's hard for me to figure out how any metal could be in it. This stuff was produced by me, but it was completely unintentional. It is a by-product from what I was really doing.
Whatever it is, it is pretty and I want some. What happens if you encase it?
If I tried to ship some to you I can almost guarantee it would be dust by the time it got to you. This stuff really is that fragile. My attempts to encase it have all failed. All the color disappears incredibly easily with very little heat.

could be: matted fiber fragments left over after firing pottery for raku finish
potential use: place on flat sheet of clear of contrasting colored glass (backing), sandwich with clear lens on top (will probably have to be done cold if the material is fragile) fuse in kiln, then try to work with it.

Alright..... haha I don't want to bore you all with this guessing so I will just reveal the secret stuff. It's creosote.(mostly carbon) I cleaned it out of my chimney and noticed this insane rainbow of colors. It forms in layers and each layer seems to be a different color. I can scratch away at the layers to reveal different colors. I think most people would just throw this stuff away, but I'm trying to find some use for it... Thanks for the ideas some of you gave and the funny guesses. :)
Can anyone explain what produced the colors? :puzzled:

there was a woman selling stuff at the tucson shows that looked exactly like that, it was not at all brittle, i am almost sure she told me it was titanium. i'm gonna try and track down her web page or somthing.
from the stove. so cool. thanks.
If I recall, "creosote" is also used to describe a wood-preserving oil made from coal tar. If you were burning treated wood, some of this oil may have been deposited with the soot in your chimney, causing that "rainbow-oil-slick" look (hence my previous, uneducated guess about motor oil). Anyway, that's my best guess.
Good luck with that stuff! And don't eat it (not that you would), it might be carcinogenic.

Yeah, creosote has a few different meanings. The firewood I burn is just normal wood. Definitely not treated in any way. I've been burning the same wood for years and it was only this one time I noticed the rainbow effect.
And thanks for the links hwcglass. That titanium really does look similar.

I have tried so many different ways to use it but never succeeded, but when kevin got the samples from me last week his first try using it he completely blew my mind. I have NEVER seen a milli so insane as what he made from the microwave with it. I hope he is willing to post some photos of the piece he made with it.
