Here is a piece I found in a shop today. Dude said he is sure it came from china.

I know people bite other people. I've heard other people say they have seen knockoffs of their designs. But wow, I never thought it would be me. I always thought they were exaggerating, 'cause everybody does I/O and they all look alike to me (j/k) but you know what I mean. But wow.

Tell me what y'all think.

Wow...now thats fucked up. You must have shit yourself when you saw that on the shelf. Yours is def' way better, so try not to sweat it too much.

I was really suprised to see it. I mean, make a piece in Texas, USA. A guy in china sees it online at GP and thinks it will sell. He tells Ping "make me 20 of those" and bam! It gets shipped to good 'ol Texas, USA. I am more suprised by the coincidence than that I was bitten. And I'm not worried. I've made a few of these "prodo headies" each is a different color, different leaf, slighlty different stance. It just makes the world seem smaller.

The pipe is not that original. Ive seen a bunch of that exact style a couple years ago at a distributors shop. Just different color and frogs etc.

if you share.....it ceases to become original...one of the primary uses of the internet is research for development....

besides...having your stuff cheaply overproduced by the competition is supposed to be the highest form of flattery.

you just gotta tellem....

"lick it...dont bite it!"

....works for me....how do you say that in Chinese?

Cool peice, Nice exicution too. To me thogh that second pic dosn't look like it would be from China, but what do I know. Is that a signature on the back of it? probably someone from your area bite'n.

how do you say that in Chinese?

“舔它…不咬住它!”

LOL thats funny, it's (aside from the obvious quality difference) excatly the same! i've been bitten, but not that hard. they even used the same colors!!

take is as a compliment i guess, i'm not realy sure what else you can do.

Yea it doesnt seem as though that piece is chinese, I dont think they sign their pieces. It says BG on the back.

“舔它…不咬住它!” is how they would sign it if it were chineese.

That's weak:tongue2: Not much is 100% original, but to copy someone's work exactly to make $$$$ is whack imo. They clearly copied that shit as exact as they could & then turned a profit off it. I wouldn't have a problem if they did a similar piece in their own style to sell or copied it exactly for their own personal use/learning BUT to copy exactly & make $$ of someone elses design/work is pathetic.

I didn't see the sig at first. Maybe I'm too much of a newbie, but I've never seen foreighn cheapo's signed like that.

The Glass Fish

The piece is from China. The store owner remembers buying it. That is not a sig, but rather the price, written on with a sharpie. To see it in person the frog looks just like ones ive seen in the dollar store, but a brighter color.

And I dont really care all that much about being copied. I knew once I posted it that was forever. But to see it in a shop I sell to is another story.

Its not like your design is original anyway, Ive seen pieces like that like 2 or 3 years ago. So there is no way they copied you too... Sorry to burst the bubble.

The Glass Fish

That is my design. Yeah frogs and shrooms aren't new. But 2 shrooms with colorcomb caps in red, twisted fumed stems with a blue pinstripe, an orange and black tree frog sitting on a ribbon build leaf that is pulled into spikes attacked to the lower left side of the piece bridged up to the upper rear left side is not a coincidence.

Is my design a variation of someone else's? undoubtedly someone else has done similar things before, but not that i've seen. I have a style that I am known for in my market that I use on my work liberally and that makes it all mine. I didn't bite it if that is what you are implying. We all lick and taste and borrow, but I don't steal.

Yes sir....

A wise man once said, the only things that a man creates that are completely original are mistakes.

I think that quote is off a bit(sounds funny to me)

Wow, that sucks. Wang Chung just totally copped your style...and did it way cleaner!!(j/k) That's gotta be weird to find a twin of your piece, and especially when you find out it comes from halfway across the world. That's why I don't post my shit, I don't need china knowing that I wrap it and THEN I rake it!! That's my style!!

tell the shop owner hes selling a piece that infringes on your copyright. remember, the little watermark on gp.org's pics with your name. Thats definitely a total copy, but yours was way better. Shop owner should be ashamed, selling chinese crap.

yeah, i have to agree that piece wasn't "inspired by" or "in the vein of", they straight jacked you bro. it's not the first time we've seen it but that's damn blatant.

We all lick and taste and borrow, but I don't steal.
that is so money, what a great line.

Take it as a compliment. There's not much you can do especially when the product is coming out of China and the copyright is only as powerful as the money you have to defend it.

I got a little bent out of shape when I found an exact copy of a piece we did on the internet. They took no time our thought into making it look any different, well except for the fact that the execution was half rate. People are going to steal designs, period. If they're having to steal designs you probably don't have much to worry about, because they have no drive to create something of they're own. I must admit the only reason I was a little pissy at someone copying it was that they should have just been inspired, took what we did and ran with it.

Hell ya damn.. yours is pimp, and im the copy master, I see somethin then go try n make it , but usually dont have a pic in front of me so it is never exact..

I couldnt make exact if i tried hehe..

But I DO try to copy a lot of stuff I see here but thats just me learning. one day i may make something completely out of my brain..

I dont know what im tryin to say here. but uh ya ..

striking similarities between the original piece and a piece Julz put on GP 2 years ago that was part of a larger cluster of mushroom pipes and jars

Monkythrowpoop
03-21-2009, 10:39 AM
I don't think he's saying that he invented the mushroom pipe, that china piece was definitely a replica with the same exact colors just less cleanliness.

Three steps:

1. Like was stated by Lucidvisions... take it as a compliment.

2. Work on developing new designs constantly to stay ahead of the Chinese.

3. Consider designing pieces that no one in their right minds would buy in a million years (like I do). The Chinese won't copy those.
