So when I was down in Tucson in February, I picked up this sweet bug collection (100 specimens) all encased in one big block of lucite (thanks to Harold for helping me negotiate a price I could sort of afford!)
Anyways, it has a centipede in there and I had NEVER thought of making a centipede before. That sucker has been staring at me hard for the last month and I finally had to give in to fate.
This thing is made of Effetre glass over a GTT Phantom and measures about 6" x 2.5" x 0.5".
And YES, it only has 42 legs. Who the hell named centipedes anyways? I had the count the legs on that specimen THREE TIMES before I believed that these things don't actually have 100 legs - don't believe everything they teach you in school kids!
So without further ado:

Damn, that is sick!
The first time I saw a giant centipede was in Bear Canyon just outside of Tucson. There are some really awesome insects and arachnids in that part of the country for sure.

That's only 38 more legs than it takes to tweak me the fuck out.
But wow, insanely amazing work. You have skills I don't even dream of possessing.
I absolutely love your work Wes.

that thing crawled outta my sleeping bag one night when i lived in vietnam back in 1923 or 24, fuzzy about the date, but i remember thinking how rude that was, looking up my skirt while i was trying to sleep....shameful!
post script: gorgeous bug.

hey wes thats awesome! my dad has put together some bug boxes like that, he has probally about 8 of them, expect they aren't incased in anything. They are dried out and spread, then pinned. He has a special light he sets up in the backyard and attracts them, catches them so he can study them. He's found tons of species just around my back yard. I'm gonna show him that awesome centipede. He is always asking about what kind of bugs your making these days.
hope everything is well, looks awesome!

Hi Wes -
Have you seen any of Christopher Marley's work? The March/April 2009 issue of Audubon Magazine has an article about Marley's work and his new book, Pheromone: The Insect Artwork of Christopher Marley.
Here's the link to the Audubon article, with photos from the book: http://www.audubonmagazine.org/features0903/portfolio.html
