What kind of frames do you like for your specs? Plastic, metal, wrap around. Why?

flip ups...(for those of us with prescription lenses)......gotta be able to function while off the torch in the shop without changing glasses all the time.......

STAY AWAY FROM METEL FRAMES They can and will retain large ammounts of heat from the torch and the glass. when I had them awhile back I ended up getting some mean blisters between my eyes quite often. I'd wrap inches of tape to stop this from happening which I thought looked pretty cool. Anyway you know my vote.

:lol never had to try that doug. I've always had 3 pr, so I wouldn't have to go getto.

My friend just got some sheet for lamping, and I tried it out on his set-up, hes got 2 nationals piggy backed, so I'd need a bigger piece, but I'll find out where he got his and send ya a pm.

I like my titanium frames - nice and light, so they don't hurt my nose. And I've never got burnt from them...

I can make sheet didymium for you, but be prepared to pay up some major bucks.

An 8" x 8" sheet will run $500.

If the glasses are 30-50 bucks why is an 8" x 8" square so much?? Just wondering..

i have the metal ones right now. the only problem is when doing big stuff the bottom of my frame hits my nose sometimes and it is SUPER hot. i get a burn like once a week from it. now i have duct tape covering that part that hits my nose. kinda funny.

Part of it is the amount of glass, a pair of lenses starts with 10 square inches of glass (65 mm round lenses). The plate is 64 square inches, 6.4 times more glass.

Also, the processing of large plate glass requires very sophisticated grinding equipment, Blanchard Flat Generators, Ring grinders and polishers.

Half the $500 is labor for the company that does the actual grinding and polishing for us, and the other half is raw material.

there's no profit in 500$ on a 5x5 sheet?

There's profit in there, sure, some for me some for the grinding/polishing company.

The biggest problem is volume. The lower the quantity, the higher the price, and the lower the profit.

We are going to make a bunch of 4 x 4 pieces (for our table shield) and have the grinding company hold the rest of the glass in reserve pending orders for larger pieces. I'm not going to invest any money on 'if come" or the hopes that someone will buy it.

If I have a firm pre-paid order for a large piece, it will get made, but I'm not going to stock them. It's too fucking expensive.

Those would make good viewing windows for a mall set up or something maybe, but I still wouldn't want to work with just plain didy....

Also, mike... are you asking 550 for just the didymium sheet, or is it one of your glasses? If it's just plain didy, then even for an 8x8 sheet, the price jump makes me wonder if there's a supplier you've overlooked or something. If it's better glass... then that's more reasonable.

The price that Phillips is showing for didymium is for a 6.5 x 6.5 inch sheet, NOT an 8" x 8" sheet as I quoted above. Let's at least compare apples to apples, eh? They are buying their product direct from Schott as a finished sheet. People have asked me to provide a price for a larger piece and I've done so. I can't help it if the price is so expensive, that's life in the optical business.

Doug - $500, and it IS sheet glass, suitable for a viewing plate, store front viewing area, demonstration viewing port, etc.

No - I haven't overlooked ANY supplier. There are several different manufacturers of didymium, and I've gotten samples from all of them and none of them, with the exception of Schott has an optical quality product. The stuff I've gotten from the others is full of striae, threads, bubbles, etc., all rendering the product unsuitable for viewing purposes. This is one reason why we've not considered buying filters from anyone BUT Schott until recently.

And just a heads up - Schott has no more ACE glass left in the US OR Germany, of any kind, in any form except finished 2 mm and 3 mm flat plate. I expect that both Phillips and myself will be out of ACE within the next couple of months or so. I've got some new glass that I'm expecting in within the next couple of weeks, we have to test it, but so far, it looks pretty good, a 3rd generation glassworkers filter.
