ok, ive been blowing glass since 96 and just found out that i should have been wearing ear plugs the whole time.

my wife brought home a sound meter from work and anything over 80 decibels you should wear ear plugs. my national 3a is about 105 to 110. even my midrange is like 85 to 90.

just a heads up for everyone.

Nationals are loud...don't think they're quite 100DB

Do your ears ring when you're done blowing glass?

here is a funny thing, at my friends house where i was working for 3 months on my national and his janky regs it was 95 dbs but with my regs its as loud as 110. i run my national 3a x3 tip at 20 oxy and 10 propane.

sometimes when im going to sleep i have ringing in my ears and my hearing is not the best, so my wife tells me.

after five years on the cc i switched to a mirage two years ago but i still can't hear the middle range. it's not uncommon, i have a few friends with the same problem.

does carlisle sell replacement eardrums?

I don't buy that the torches are loud enough to damage your hearing. 100DB is the maximum SPL that many concerts are not allowed to surpass, and my torches don't come anything near that. I've lost far more hearing from the car system I put in a few years ago, and from rock-n-roll concerts. But my ears don't ring when I'm working on my Carlisle or my National.

Now would some one answer that damn phone?????

Between the torch, the occasional whine from the oxy reg, and the vent fan, it does get a little noisy.

I nused to work on jets and they are only 120-140db. My premixes dont even come close to the level of noise. I can talk over them. Now there is a big dif between my delta and my 3a but I dont think im getting 100db from the 3a. May be im more def than I thought!

like i said, i was just giving a heads up. i dont think anyone can or will argue that anything over 80db you should wear ear protection and that it can damage your hearing.

constant noise can be more damaging then peak noise..... over time it will build up....

in the machine shop its pretty common.... it doesnt seam loud next to a machine lathe or mill , but over time and exposure to the noise you will start to loose bands of hearing range...

honestly around my friends cc after about an hour i got my ear plugs in just to reduce the noise.......

i oddly like it quiet shop.... run surface mixes and using the lathe i have a set of poly plugs for shooting that mold to my ears.... or a set of ears (noise reducing ear phones).... i keep a few on hand...

Not if you get nice earplugs. I've never thought to use them for glass, but my drummer (yes, he's mine - hands off!) swears by his pair. A bit pricy, but reusable and they let you hear everything, just less of it. (I will post a link if I can find it)

I think Byron might have been kidding about the subtle nuances, but I used to wear those kind of earplugs sometimes when I played music a lot. The call them "ear filters". Here is a link (http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Hearos-High-Fidelity-Ear-Filters?sku=421214) to the kind I had and here is another pair (http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/product/Clear-Audio-Ear-Filters-for-Drummers?sku=421224) that is a little less expensive.

i personaly like these , softer and you can shut off the tube if that becomes to loud..... good ear plugs

http://www.peltor.se/int/Product.asp?PageNumber=152&ProductCategory_Id=42&Product_Id=16

and these seam to work pretty well too , and you can hook an mp3 player to em.... great for the lawn, and you can still use the amplifier to hear , it just takes out the high sounds.... so you can hear normaly.

my biggest problem with ear muffs is they get hot and squeese my head. but when your doing some stuff its best to have a good pair

When I have to work on the CC at Blue Moon during Austin Fireflies meetings, I always wish I'd brought earplugs. I couldn't handle that level of noise every day all day. Go GTT!

does anyone know that gtt's are les than 80 db? im really just wondering if gtts are under 80 db because i would have thought that a midrange was under 80 and its not.

can someone tell me which is louder a midrange or a gtt?

it all depends on how you run the torch honestly..... i get really hot flames with out hearing any thing but rushing gas in my lines..... and venting but i would say yea if you make her howel a bit you can get her up to 80db
