So I've finally returned from the three+ week road trip and am getting my life back in order, so it's time to share one detail of my trip which especially struck me as of interest here.

In the Plains Indian Museum at the Cody Museum in Cody, WY I found this peace pipe tucked far away in a corner. My little cousin was the one who actually pointed out that this thing is a DUCK! The thought just didn't even enter into my mind until he said this, and then I was like you're such a little idiot - who would make a pipe out of a duck. Then I saw what he was talking about and promptly shut up...

I think that there's a wood or bone tube running the length of this thing, but the bowl is definitely the duck's beak. The mouthpiece is hidden away in some horsehair, but clearly the entire body of the duck has been used for this pipe.

I'd LOVE to see something like this made in glass. This is just some crazy shit! I can't imagine who the person was that said: "Well, let's use this WHOLE DUCK for the pipe - that ought to be sweet." Anyways, enjoy!

Glad you made it home safe, Wes.

Wow...the first thing I thought when I saw that pic is "how has that thing survived intact for so long?" Like...wouldn't it have rotted away? :puzzled: Nevertheless, very cool!

Seriously, I was thinking about making rugs out of my dogs when they die, but now I can get a rug and a pipe:).

That's even better. When people die we should make them into pipes. Just imagine where you could put the mouthpiece!

Jes - I'm def jealous! Couldn't make it to Corning, but had a good time with my folks here in MT, SD, and WY (and got to see that weird pipe in Cody.)

I'm also curious to hear more of your input on the peace pipe - have you seen any similar pipes, or pipes with other real animal parts (besides feathers)? There are def plenty of ducks/geese in your area, so I'd think there'd be some possibility if there's a spiritual aspect behind the duck being on the pipe (which I assume there would be!)...

Thanks,
Wes.

I can really only tell you waht I know, I guess I can try and ask around a little too. I would like to think that all them old time pipes were smoked thinking of peace.

The red stone that many traditional and ceremonial pipes around this region anyway are made of pipestone which to my knowledge comes only from a place called pipestone Minnesota, and tribal people from the region can harvest the precious material from within the ground.

I will have to ask some more about animale pipes and reasons for them, I love these kinds of questions so I hope to get somethin for ya, much peace jes

i had a friend who know an animal embalmer and he brought over a ziplock full of ashes. instead of fine ash, it was more like coarse gritty sand. We smashed some in between 2 marias, along with some color and spun it up and made a marble, deciding that in fact we could make everlasting pet necklaces & marbles but it was super gross and creepy to work with so after 2 or 3 tests we got rid of it all and didnt take any orders.

Re: dead things in glass

I worked for a couple of furnace folks who encase human ashes for memorials - just looks like sooty, gray sh!t in there - like you burnt of some dichro, basically.

I worked for one furnace guy who had a line on these 9/11 memorials - DNA (tiny amounts of remains from victims, cultured to replicate into the snotty stuff) hermetically sealed (cold-sealed) into some different little vases they made. Ashes in glass aren't so bad, but even the DNA snot idea grossed me out, let alone how those things looked...

I asked but not a whole lot but one reliable source for now. Along time ago...
the first pipe came to the people around here in a white buffalo calf womans dream and was made from a yearling buffalo calf.

Alot of people liked to smoke and where made from animale bone or antler and wooden stem and nowdays modern ones will be decorated with feathers and he's seen duck feathers like mallard covering the pipe.

Wes, I would say that one is really cool one you got a photo of it seems so old and rare. I didnt get any answer about if theri is a special duck dance or ceremony or particular reason for having a pipe made like that. It looks well taken care of.

The pipestone from pipestone Minnesota is red because it is blood and has been made for peace pipes.

Their is also a black stone that can be shaped and if you where a warrior you might have a pipe with black stone that you would smoke before war.

their are many things to learn and more was told then I could really try to write so I will keep asking and hearing the same stories and get better at telling them too.

I learned alot and was educated moreso I want to learn more of my native culture their is so much to learn about everything and many many people are getting older and it is important to learn so much with the time we have here.

My tribe the ojibwe people came here to lake superior region around 2000 years ago and followed the 7 turtle islands to where the food would be just growing on the water and stayed on the turtle islands.

But if you want to know more you can google my tribe and many other tribes too, thanks if I learn anything more I will report back. giigaawabamin jes
