Well i left the studio for 3 and a half hours. Get back and go to work turn the torch on. What no propane. That's odd i just used it. My suspicions arose so i went out back to check on the tanks. Sure enough someone had stolen my propane tank(well actually air gasses, mine now) and my regulator.
Now comes the good part. I do have video surveillance on my tanks. So i go and review it and sure enough 6:53 pm guy pulls up and janks my shit.
And here is what a douche bag thief looks like. Now its in the police hands. Also this guy is gonna love it when these pics are all over town. Its a Small town and it won't take long to identify him.

He tried for the other propane but i think someone spooked him. It looks like that in the video. He turned the gasses off and tried to rip the hose off but then took off quick. I guarantee when i talk to the lady at jiffy mart across the street tomorrow she'll know who it is. She knows everybody. Sux for me though instead of working tonight i went to the bar down the street and then........ Well at least i feel better about the situation now.

I dont want to sound like a dick but you are lucky all he got was a bottle of propane. Not all of your really valuable items.
I might add he looks like a tweeker, hopefully when the cops catch him he will have a bunch of dope on him. I guess a bottle of propane is worth 5 years to some drug addicts.

I also got to thinking about it. see that green tank in the pic he didn't touch that, and its worth way more than the close to empty propane tank he got. That oxy tank isn't hooked to anything and its weight in stee is more than the propanel. Why would he take just the propane? I mean he had the time you'd think he would have taken the oxy first and then dealt with the propane. He didn't even look at it he went straight for the propane. It seems odd factoring that in.

not sure, in the first pic, it looks like he could have goggles on his forehead, similar to the philips goggles i wear. perhaps another glassblower just running low on propane? maybe itt'll magicly reappear tomorrow full....

What a fucking idiot!!!!!...Just like you said chris, why not the oxy tank? this guy is clearly a fucking retard...not only did he not see a camera facing right at him and his truck, but he showed his tats and stole the least valuable item.
I doubt he's a glassblower. A real gaffer would have taken that green oxy tank first thing. I bet you'll find him or the cops will. good luck!

just something to think about , but frankly if i was looking for cash i wouldnt go near an oxy tank. also the general public are fearful of oxy.... oh gosh it might explode like in the movies. the other thing is most oxy tanks here can be tracked. its hard to actualy get scrap for em. frigging 100 pound propane tanks on the other hand .... are every where.... can be purchased easy from lowes... and be sold to about any one that needs propane....
just some thoughts... i moved shops and put in security... if you dont protect your investment even in the slightests. whos fault is it really? its spendy but if you got 5gs invested atleast isnt 500 in security worth it? how about 500 a year in insurance?
i have gotten some great stuff on security cameras over the years. and its unfortunate that we have to do it. but it must be done.
good job. on getting info on this guy... i hate hearing about shop robberies... or shop fires. it is a peice of mind taht i have layers of security around here , even when im out of town. i really cant say if it will work. but its better then nothing. and it sucks while you wait for your claim to go threw. but its a lot better then starting over....
When i was young my mom lived in the only place a devorced college student could , the ghetto. I have seen some truely horrible stuff. and i guess thats affected how i deal with things. i know how low people will go.
Back up tools. i keep a portable kit , with every thing to get back tool wise. as i buy a new tool to replace an old one i cycle it into this protable kit. its kept in a safe place. It doesnt have glass or gas but an older torch, and hand tools. its also not to expensive over all. but it is enough for me to travel with and if i do get cleaned out i can be back to work in under a couple days. which sounds a lot better to me then a few months waiting for insurance to kick in. i still need to add work space, gas , and raw glass and vent. but those are fairly easy compared to getting all the hand tools in order.
safe keep your documents, pictures , work history , computer files on a crypted thrumb drive in a fire safe. and make copys and put them in a safety depost box. the tools might be gone , but youll need all the other stuff to get back on your feet. remeber if you can pick it up and walk off with it, its just as bad as emptying it. make em work for it.
security cameras , are great but you have to aim them , and have storage, also back up on a thumb drive is a common option if you can there are fire safes with usb connections to back up these files. and a ups power supply large enough to run a day is nice , so even if the power is cut you will still have this system running for a while.cameras are tiny and can be hidden , but i have found obvious servaliance is the best plan. i have put in a mix of broken cameras in the obvious spots and hidden cameras that are working , seams to work the best. if some one does go after the cameras they normaly go after the non fuctional obvious ones... and think there safe.
ADT- other monitored security , most insurance companys will give a discount for this option. it can be nice and it can be bad or expensive. but a very good thing to have honestly. most have intrgate fire alrams etc. i saw one offered with the panic buttons you carry on your key chain... an option if you think y ou might be hurt in your house or shop. to get medical attention if no one is around.
Insurance- go to your agent, talk with them see what they think are risks in your area , and what lists and values and how to document your holdings. see what programs and what it covers, its an afternoon and will help you in the long run protect yourself.
Attorney - always helpful to have some one to get legal advice from. and help you get your case threw. and help you if you are out of town. or the unexpected does happen. most attorneys have a small fee to be on retainer if you can find one. in general if you can find one you can get along with that is best. they can help you read over contracts , make contracts , and fill in your business plan.
locks - locks are only as good as the door and frame there attached to. i figure if they want it bad enough they should have to work to get it. get good locks with good keys go to a real lock smith to get it done. windows should be secured along with ventlation, windows , any thing entering or exiting. wall racks on tanks and protected line hoses are a great option also not just for theft but general safety.
Lighting - good night lighting , especialy in parking areas and access is a good idea. also where the cameras are.
People movement - controling who shows up at your shop. sence i work alone its easy to keep people away. there are nearly no one stopping buy for no reason. and i know that cant be casing the place. but thats not an option every where. i have been to shops where people randomly show up from the neighborhood and its freaked me out while im working. its a good and bad thing. you have to think how much you value obscurity as a safety missure. also there are people around my shop nearly 24/7. and i have a fairly good relastionship with my neighbors. those things i think are key. being on good terms with those around you can be helpful.
location - i moved my shop from the city to the country. its more secure, less random people around, and quieter, this also means i can work almost any time of the day with out worry of being in industrial space or having to follow noise ordiances. there are only a hand full of people that know where my shop is and are invited over. normaly i will go out and meet people rather then have them around my shop. if you do work in a city, learn your people flow, who walks when and why. who hangs out . what paths are to and from your shop. what kinda traffic. what are your risks and how can you shore it up. i had to put in about 4 concrete deviders infront of the doors to one shop becouse people would park infront of the doors and make it tough to move in and out of the shop appropriately. also to prevent people from ramming the security door.
Fire protection - there are many options here and you will have to tailor it to your situation , fire extenguishers , alarms etc , are good. co2 and even propane/natural gas detectors are good. shut offs for your gasses inside and out is a very good idea. and stage your tanks away from the building as possible. remeber its not just you and stuff your protecting with this , but your neighbors and firefighters. automatic fire bottles are avalible , figure out your escape routes. etc.
First aid - kits , training. there are accidents. some times this can save your life. i keep kits in each room of the shop the master kit in the office. common things like burn cream etc in the glass studio and bandages. liquid skin is a very nice thing to have.
Self protection - frankly a can of Halt brand dog spray , or a can of bear spray is nice , but with vent etc. is a bad idea you will most likely hurt yourself while scarying them away. tasers and stun guns can scare people away with out hurting any one. but have there own dangers.
Yes i own a gun, yes there is one in my shop. I will say if you do put one in your shop take training courses for defence and relevent to your state. know your laws or it will turn into a liability. and buy a safe or locking device. this is a last line of defence thing but like working. some times you just need the propper tool. You will personaly have to deside if this option if for you, if you doubt at all. then dont do it.
I dont mean to come out as paranoid. but over the years i have slowly added to security and safety little at a time. take little things and every year improve it and it will be a lot easier on you. you dont have to be paranoid to want to protect something dear to you i hope. I hope i never see an post or articale about a robbery/fire/injury. but i know i will. the point is not to stop these things. but to minimize damage and get back up and running in case something happends. i have had bad things happen to me and people i know. so this is just a logical evolving part of my life. honestly though do you really need a bad thing to happen to you to make you prepare for it? I hope it never happends but realisticly it can and a little foot work now and thought can prevent and help rebound from a bad event.
i will try to edit this more and post it. this is just a rough stream of concousness first draft. if there is any thing you would like to add i would be very happy to hear it. i want to keep every one informed as best i can.

Hopefully I can answer one of your questions about why. Meth cooks use propane tanks to steal anhydrous ammonia, one of the necessary ingredients for cooking. The AA is corrosive to the metals in the tank valves, you can tell a tank has been used for that purpose by a blueish discoloration of the valve. Be aware that tanks used for this will eventually corrode the threads on the valve assembly until very little pressure is required for failure.
Sorry to hear of your loss, good luck in the apprehension and prosecution of this criminal.

Love it...gotta love small towns for that reason...and I bet he will have more than just the stolen propane tank on him when they bust him.
I'd run a chain through the top of all the tanks...no one is going to try to haul off that liquid...so just strap the propane right to it.
I have thought for years (since I was robbed by a glass blower "friend") that we should have a thread where we can post pictures of shop thieves. Then, anytime you are considering a new shop mate, you could just scan through the pictures real quick and make sure the new guy wasn't already identified as a giant douche fuck who steals from his own people. Now, I know that won't help avoid random tweakers, but it would have saved me a ton of heartache and trouble. After my issues, everyone was like, "oh yeah, that bitch is crazy, she stole from my friend too." I am so tired of studio theft...my sister never comes home and goes, "oh fuck, someone stole all my paint and brushes."

Glad to hear the law is on your side today Chayes, hope you get your tank back undamaged. You might want to consider puting up a cyclone cage around it with razor wire. Every welding shop I worked in did, and for good reason. The last shop I worked at kept shitloads of steel, horses, bins, welding fixtures and positioners outside. We had shit stolen left and right, stuff that required a large forklift to move. Shit one day I brought in a big positioner (like this one http://www.cedricbodeengineering.com/ximages/amin-heavy-duty-positioner-2.jpg)
it took a good hour plus to get it where I needed it, then came to find some asshole stole all the copper wire out of the machine. I still cant figger oot why the owner never installed cameras or lights in the yard.

Yeah, and if that's not enough, they could run the pic of his face through a database of facial characteristics and get an exact match - listing his current address and known hang-outs.

sux the probation officer showed up and gave me a subpoena. So now i HAVE to go to court. This guy wasted enough of my time by stealing the tank. Still I have no tank, and now i HAVE to waste more time. More of a headache than if i had just bought a new propane tank and a chain.
just think about the extra time you are spending court will help keep this guy out of everyone's yard for a little longer :D

...yeah it would be a lot easier if you could have just shot him but theres even lower life scum that gets due process. he'll probably make a deal and plead guilty before the trial so you may end up not having to go. the penalty will be more if he goes to trial and loses.

It makes quite a statement about the american justice system and the state of society today when the whole problem is you dont have your tank, and the solution is wasting LOTS of time for lots of people, wasting LOTS of money, and ruining 1 persons life. With the time, effort, and $ invested in this, your town could have just spent more $ on welfare or something for people to stupid/lazy to work for themselves (which isnt really okay for them but...) and preventend all the workin folk from getting their shit jacked.

LOL I wouldn't be shocked.
like someone else said...You going to court for one day will be doing the cummunity a favor. Getting this dope off the streets before he does something stupid and gets somebody hurt or killed, because he's so damn stupid, is a good deed.
Plus then you will be able to tell the judge about how you need the tank for your business and how this man took away business from you. I wouldn't be suprised if the judge forced the man to dish over the tank and some loot.

...to even try saying stupid stuff like that ain't him in the video. Also to try and tell a cop thats got him pulled over and the only one in the truck behind the wheel then say he wasn't driving....
Eh, FWIW he was being smarter than you'd think. Stupid would be to admit guilt to an officer.
It's best to not say anything, period. A denial wouldn't look good in court if found guilty... but still... NEVER ADMIT GUILT.
Of course if things work the way they SHOULD this guy will never get another chance to lie to a cop.
