I have been looking into getting a good camera and have decided on Canon for brand, anyone familiar with the Canon Power Shot S3 IS? I cant seem to figure out if its the kind that takes different lenses or if its just a fancy point and shoot. All I know is it looks like a semi-professional camera and you can find them for a reasonable price.

I use a Cannon 20D with a macro lens for my shots like this..... It isn't glass as my computer crashed and I lost ALL my pictures of my marbles but at least you can see one can get close enough for a good shot IF it were glass.

the rebel xs is a pretty nice SLR and I think its less then 600 now. I think the XT is their lowest priced SLR.
The powershot is not an SLR meaning you can't change lenses but it appears to be a pretty decent camera for a non-swappable lense and does allow using filters. Its kind of low in the range of resolution however(megapixels). It definetly appears to be a bridge unit between an SLR and a plain ol point and shoot.

pretty nice pics there Emmett. Yeah Cannon makes killer stuff. Nikon and Olympus too. My Kodak Easyshare C743 just plain sucks. Its absolutely horrible for taking close up shots. I have used a tripod and timer, everything looks good on the screen, but then the actual pic it takes is dark rubbish, doesn't matter what I do, it's either over or under exposed. Now if only I could sell my inventory off I could go out and get a decent camera. Thanks for the input everyone.

I use an old Canon Powershot SD400 5 megapixel. It used to take fantastic pictures, but it got dropped in the sand and the lens is now recently scratched.

It cost about $250 new, but you can get a 9 megapixel with same features for $150 nowadays.

Snake, have you checked out CNET's reviews yet? That's where I go first before I sink $$$ into anything electronic. You can sort by brand, price, features, etc. and check out the editors' reviews, as well as consumer reviews. Too, if you scroll about halfway down the main digital camera page, you'll find a Digital Camera Finder which may help you narrow the field.

I used CNET a couple of years ago to find my camera...we're on a tight budget, so I got the Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z10 - looks like an alien camera, but it takes pretty decent shots, especially when I use the tripod. Hope this helps.

For pricing when I was buying my SONY A300 DSLR these people beat everybody else in pricing.... And had camera in my hands in about 7 days (ground shipping)....

And there was a problem with the memory card, I made single phone call (no hassle) and new card was shipped same day and again had new memory card in hand in 4 days(USPS)... They just asked me to return damaged card when ever I could get around to it...

Just bought a used Canon Powershot S3 IS. This thing rocks, it has a super macro mode that I think was designed specifically for marble makers. Its SLR and you can get different lenses for it. ISO up to 800, f-stop adjustment. Has 12X optical zoom, manual focus mode, more bells and whistles than I know what to do with. I got mine for $140, craigslist deal. Seriously, I recommend this camera any day and can't wait to get some pics up after I've got this thing all dialed in.
