View Full Version : Glow glass encasing limits

don't want to reinvent the wheel, but is there info about how thick the boro encasing can be before it starts reducing the glow factor? any feedback is greatly appreciated. :D
I find I can sleeve the piss out of it and it glows great I can make a few small sections out of one stick. Put it this way I coil it up into a small ball and then gentle puff out even in a nice fluffy flame go slow.
If you don't burn it I have put 4mill of clear over it and then a layer of og moss light I had and it still glows thew and charge.
I love working this stuff been using it on gog parts. I can make a few sticks of this and some u-glass go a long way.

i made a nice ratty marble with glow glass over blue moon stringgers and it didnt glow at all, do not stretch it too far!!
large dots or straight up will work. the rod itself glows better than I expected.

The object is to not get it too deep under clear so that it does not charge.
I sent Joe a link to this thread, it's his glass. Hopefully he'll answer soon.
What I do know is that it works great when applied very thin over the white gun mounts. Nothing like teeth that glow in the dark!

Couldnt the opposite be true? it is well known the convex lens shape of pendants and marbles magnifies light, and therefore may actually intensify the light energy.
Im not sure on this one, just something to think about...
It will charge in a big vortex, but it will check to hell if you put it to deep like a 2 1/2" + marble. I haven't had any problems getting to to charge but the checking issue has been the big one for me, but like she always says don't go to deep:D

putting it deep is no problem in regards to charging it, as long as it's clear (I tend not to put any color over it except for small details I don't want to glow or glow much). I can see how you can burn it out using too much heat when you encase it or implode it deeply so it won't glow anymore, but that's not actually caused by a thick layer of clear.
I've imploded it, cased it, pulled it, abused it and treated it kindly. It doesn't stand up to much abuse from heat, if you get it too hot you end up with a grainy white that doesn't glow, but treat it gently and patiently in a cooler flame and it'll glow nicely.
It stretches out a bit too much if you're using only tiny little dots in an implosion (I like doing very deep implosions), so it won't glow very much (as long as you haven't burned it out, that is), but if you're doing lots and lots of tiny dots, it all adds up and you get a nice glow on. Lines work pretty good, too.
I haven't had any incompatability/checking issues with it at this point and I hope I never will :)
I've found that the glow works best unencased in sculptural/massive applications, that way if you get the surface of a piece too hot, you still have plenty of glow coming through from under the surface.
Brent Graber is a good person to talk to if you want to know more about the workings of boro glowstix, he has this stuff covered pretty well ... now that i've said it, he'll probably seek me out and kill me :P
below are an unencased solid skull and an implosion (the disc in the implosion is part of the implosion, a lot of people think it's backing, but it's actually imploded. The pendant is not backed with anything at all.)
I like coiling and then coiling clear over it or a sleeve of heavy wall what ever fits.
I like Aussie love the stuff. Yes I can tell you do.
Only tried the aqua blue myself but I got a quarter pound and the way I use it I still have a 3rd left.
I was able to get the qp paid for with only 2 sticks of it, and thats the way I roll with pricey material I make items that pay for the glass then play.

from facebook...
Hey Morgan...
You are correct.
The more you magnify light into the Glow Glass particles, the longer and brighter it will glow.
Example, I have an encased glow pendant, glow in center, clear al around, I hold it in the sun...it gets bright.....I take the same piece and put it in the sun and underwater in the pool....it charges even quicker!
I make ceramic pool tiles because of this kick arse phenomena...
sorry I couldn't answer in the forum.....repot this if you see fit.
Have a great day bro!

No F'ing around....
There is only one "Glow Glass" and it's what I've been making for the glass, ceramics and polymer industries for the past 10 + years. We take pride in being the only Non-Toxic, Non-Carcinogenic, Non-Radioactive, Non-Hazardous and Non-Flammable Glow Pigment manufacturer......)ahem...made in the U.S. I have to add after reading everything lately)......to date.
As seen live in Grey Matter Studios.......I mix MY Glow Glass Powders in water (which is an impossibility for most other tested glow materials due to release of NOXIOUS gases).....and I then drink it to alleviate any fear, harm or confusion.
After years of selling various toys (Swirlees, Lapis Solaris, etc...) on lot as a kid..(to those silly people that will drink just about anything AND kick your ass if they get sick from it)..I knew that whatever I made had to be safe....OR IT WAS MY ARSE....these are the standards that I have lived by in all my various inceptions and especially with Glow Glass LLC Materials.
Everything else currently used to impersonate my product is just a Chinese paint pigment.
I have nothing against the Chinese.......though have enough common sense not to drink any chemical glow compound from there mixed in water. (or use it in glass without HEAVY respirators on)
We've got enough hazards in our workspaces......that's why I do what I do...aside from endless joy of reminding my friends and fellow artists......Be careful what you allow on your bench.....
for the record......
one of my wonderful FORMER distributors did in fact try to send Elan / Origin a bunch of the aforementioned Chinese paint pigments in a failed attempt to rid me from your industry.....for whatever reason (insert pic of Mr. Crabs from Spongebob here with the words"money money money money money" in quotes)........thankfully the factory is more than satisfied with the results of Glow Glass Pigments.......which are CONSTANTLY tested against the mentioned knock-off's.
If you want the Glow Glass Powders you can find them at http://www.glowglass.com
If you want the new Glow Stix.....I have them and frequent the factory often (as it is only 1 1/2 hrs away)
They can also be purchased through ANY Origin Glass Distributor which are all listed at http://www.originglass.com
If there is anything that I may do to be of service.....
I'm right here...

I do not mean to come across as any sort of dick.
I have a solid product that's been proven consistent for a long time in our industry.
If Anyone wants to pull glow from a pot....I invite you to try....Hell....I want to come and help you do it (Ask Henry and Abe WHY I ended up having my colors made into borosilicate cane at Elan / Origin Glass after all these years ).....but for all of our safety, after all this research, I'm going to have to insist...that we please stick to the colors that brought us here in the first place........
They're the ones that are still made with my blood, sweat and tears and proven daily by your artistic talents.....you know them as Glow Glass LLC.
Much love, thanks and respect.

I just wrote Claudia. Asked her about the other colors being made into stix, and with the coming of parraglow for $50/lb is she going to be dropping prices to match, or just release new ones that roger hasn't yet. If/when she replies I'll post her letter here.

So what's the consensus on using Glow Glass in deep encasement? I hear some saying it checks some not. I'd like to use in i a vortex or implosion marble but don't need it to check all over.
Less garage time? lower temp any tips on things to avoid? Joe feel free to jump in I'd like to try the couple test rods I got pretty soon.
