hey all,

i've got some plans for helping to manage the waste we generate at AGI this year. i tried to spark some interest in the communal effort of as all doing our part to recycle last year, but didn't get a real feel for weather it was anything anybody thought was an improvement to the event..

i'm curious if a more comprehensive effort to better deal with this years waste is something people coming to the event this year have any interest in partaking in this time around?

here's what i have in the works:

-TRANSFER STATION -
the transfer station would act as one does in a municipality, in this case, it would be a 10' x 10' x 10' walled in tent in a centralized location where all waste would be deposited, sorted, and segregated for better disposal, recycle, or reuse.

RECYCLING -
glass, aluminum, plastic, corrugated cardboard, non-corrugated cardboard, white paper, newspaper, scrap metal, batteries, etc. will be separated into containers and brought to a local recycling center or back to Pittsburgh with me for recycling.

FOOD WASTE -
i'll be bringing a couple large barrels for compost for soil. any other food not fit for compost could be donated a local farm for the pigs or such..

REUSE -
anything that has any value for continued use will be made available to whomever wants it or donated to the thrift shop that is 1 quarter mile down the road.

BURNABLES -
anything left over after things are separated into the previous groups that doesn't contain carcinogens or other hazardous materials should have value for the campfire or Tom's burn pile.

WASTE -
anything that has no value for any of the previous categories will be disposed of through legitimate means, ideally through the utilization a the Corporation Waste Management.

i'm open to any suggestion as to how to approach any of this or other waste we will be generating. like the glass waste or whatever..

also, i and a few friends have been collecting ceramic plates, cups of all sorts, and silver ware. everything we are collecting is distinctive enough where if an attendee to the event borrows and uses a plate and cup, it will be easy for everyone to keep theirs straight and separate from each others. there will be limited water available for rinsing the dishes, if it is nor your style to eat for a few days off of one plate with only a few rinses, ignore this aspect of the waste management..

i'll have a few friends helping me with this project previous to the event and during the event. i will be looking in the next few weeks for any of the attendees of the event to chime in on their interest in participating on any level, whether they are absolutely opposed to this idea or whether they have an interest in taking part in some aspect of the project.

again, i'm also hoping for any ideas or input into how to make it work.

i'm really hoping that a group of people as small as we are at AGI can work to manage our impact on the environment for that week.

let me know what y'all think..

yea i was hoping there would be some guide lines posted thanks matte. Ok stuff off the top of my head.

Bees/wasps/flys - as long as thats well taken care of good deal.

Glass trash.... if some ones willing to batch a big melt to make an agi sign or something.... wonder if thermite and a ground mold would work....

i don't mind helping out. I'm bringing my own water bottles and dinner wear.

and ill try my best to keep things properly thrown away.

+1 for nalgene

I just want to through out there that I will be collecting all brown glass bottles without screw tops.

so I salute your effort to make sure everything gets sorted properly.

ha, please Andrew!

you know damn well, if i end up working to do the things i've listed here that i will in no way care about brown bottles without screw tops. i'll be real pleased just to get everyone to take their last sip and get only glass into the barrel marked "glass"..

you can dig for what you need after that.

I'd like to see a system to deal with scrap glass from the work areas. I always scavenge for rod for punties and stuff, plus any decent sizes pieces of tube to practice with. It is a shame to see so much glass get tossed.

I'd like ot see the volume of styro and paper decrease, and am all up for reusable utensils and such. I try to do that anyway.

Since I won't be there if only for a couple of days, I'm sorry I can't help out with the setting up and sorting efforts.

I have a collection of cups I've made at AGI, none are very good... but they're getting better. I wonder if I could spin out a glass plate....

Matt, I'm glad that someone else is on the level with recycling. I'm writing an article about this subject as we speak.
