I am starting to play with powders. I don't have many choices and am looking to order some in my next order. I am wandering if anyone has some must have powders that should be in my next order. Also would like links to work that has these particular color's so I could see there outcome if anyone would take the time for me. So basically what are your favorites and what are bad ones and why? Thanx and Blue Skies justin

I like Silver Strike 5.

Here's a little vessel I did with it a while back (no making fun of the flare on the mouth...)

If you got the dosh, and can find it, Milon Townsend's "Advanced Flameworking , Volume I (http://thebluemoonpress.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=2)" delves into a lot of powder use. I know a lot of people on here dopn't like Milon cause he doesn't think pipes are art, but he does some cool work, and if you can get the book for less than retial (try amazon, ebay, half.com, etc...) it's not a bad buy.

Also, the Northstar frit poster (http://www.glasscraftinc.com/product/NorthstarFritPoster.pdf) shows what powders for different colors of glass look like

Yeah. It's WAY too thick. In photos it doesn't look that bad, but in person you can really tell it's off...

Milon have a different attitude after what went down in Vegas. He was surprised, impressed and extremely humbled.

Oh no, the pipers didn't force him into a closet and have their way with him, did they? Or perhaps I shouldn't ask. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas I suppose.

All kidding aside, that's awesome to hear. Perhaps we may be able to get him to hang out here every once in a while? It's all kinds of fun when the old guard show up and teach us a thing or two.

kinda lame that it took him a show in vegas to realize how amazing some pipes are that people are making out there.

doesn't that guy make whine glasses? the hypocrisy kills me, and makes me lose so much respect for his work.... even if he has been enlightened on the subject.

Whoa, glad I reread what I was about to post, cause I almost brought up the art vs. non-art debate again.

Personally, I don't know that I'll ever call my work art. I'd prefer to think of myself as an artisan, a craftsperson that makes things both functional and non-functional. Though that may be because everyone I've ever known who referred to themselves as an "artist" I've always thought were kind of full of themselves.

In the end though, does it really matter? If it feels like art to you, then it's art. If it doesn't, then that's fine. No need to force your opinion on others though.

A few of my favorites:

GA:

Amazon Night - Lovely greenish transluscent when oxidized. Outstanding oil-slick rainbow colors opacified when reduced. Great for texturing. Five stars!

Amazon Bronze - Dense reddish-brown that goes oil-slick rainbow colors when reduced.

Amazon Jewel - Similar to Blue Caramel Northstar. Mirror plates when oxidized, lovely jade to tourqoise striations when reduces. Great for texturing.

Silver Strike 5 - Very similar to Northstar Butterscotch. Flat babyshit beige. Good for texturing. Dense color covers thin.

Northstar -

Blue Moon - Wonderful speckled blue-gray surface with jade and tourquoise highlights. Great for texturing.

Aurora - All-time powder color with dense reds similar to Amazon Bronze but with better reduction colors. Five stars!

Exotic 28 - Incredible metallic surfaces with dense coverage, outrageous fuming, and some cracking issues. Beautiful but be careful.

Exotic 27 and 29 - Green and Red respectively. Good, dense colors, but can be problematic. Be sure to melt each application all the way smooth before applying the next layer.

Turbo Cobalt - Two colors in one! Lapis blue if oxidized... charcoal black if reduced. This is the best "black" powder.

Butterscotch - Very similar to Silver Strike 5. Baby shit beige. Great coverage for dark underlayers in graal. I use more of this than almost any other color.

Rust - Better red powder than ruby. More density and better coverage with little or no livering. Keep it oxidized for best red.

Jade - That's right... the evil jade. This is a great powder. Lovely eggshell surface with a bright, true opaque green. This is one color that is much better as a powder than in rod form.

Teal - Similar to and goes really well with Jade.

There are more but that should get you started.

Don't get Lava powder by NS. Boily and the color is puke pink and not the crazy orange like on the poster. I like butterscotch inside or outside but never tried the powder.
