So I am going to be melting glass, at a festival in the area soon.

Looking for any pointers or tips on doing this.

I will have plenty of stock ready to buy, not really gonna be doing custom pieces but will do some, especially pendants.

Bringin my small Jen Ken that I got from a fellow glass worker who passed on, it needs some work. Look for that post too.....

I will be setup in the back of my 6x12 trailer blowing glass out of the back toward the crowd, with a huge fan behind me, fuming the crowd, LOL.

No they will be at least 10-15ft away. I dont wanna be able to hear them.

Thanks, I tried a search and came up dry

I do many demos at festivals it seems like at least once a week during the season. I dont know how much help i could be for you with my skill level. just showing you wha I do at festivals inside and outdoors is same process for me. I like making the goblets or dishes and what not because it like something for everyone, and they get to see this thing get put together. I make the pendants and some roses and now swans and seahorse and such. You may be making different things but heres me making at some small fests if you wanna see. I have also found that communication and interaction with the audience helps with apprietiation of our art medium on many levels.

I would recommend being closer to the crowd so you can talk to them and answer questions. It makes them MUCH more interested. Rope off an area of 5 feet or so to make sure no one gets too close.

People want interaction and with a glass worker the only thing they have is communication since their not touching a thing while your demoing .... I agree with Murph in being as close as you can without any danger .... you can always make a really simple Pexi window .... I bought a bigger piece and cut down the sides, added a couple hinges and now they can stick their noses up to the window. Being able to answer questions or explaining things in general will boost sales 10 time fold instead of silence and that far of a viewing radius. I work glass 7 days a week in front of park patrons and we have no less then 1500 or so in the park with a high of around 8000. They love to watch but they love to talk even more so remember that when doing your thing. I work 1 hour on and 1 hour running my mouth answering questions and talking to others that collect glass.

GL and lets us know how it went.

peace

I am getting ready and getting my stock up , what would you guys say is the best selling item at a festival, its a Music/Hippie wannabe fest, Like wrap and rake$10-30 all day or $ 50 i/o, pendants definately on hemp and cord, and made to order.....

Any help would be great, its my first time doing one of these.

Don't put all your effort into pipes until your POSITIVE you can sell/display them there. Add jars to that mix. Pump out the I/o chillums

Ez-ups are gonna turn into ballistic missiles in any wind. Better Canopies are the Light-Dome canopy http://lightdomecanopies.com/sss/lightdome_352_351_8889/index.html They are pricey, but they'll last you 10 years or more and are good in wind and rain. If you're going to do this for a while, it's a good investment. If you're going to do this for a couple of week-ends a year....go with the EZ-UP but get the ones that are in the 300-400 price range that are much better than the 200 dollar ones.

Good luck with the demos. It'll make a huge difference in your sales!

Conchis...agreed about the easy up.
Seen one take off cause we were the first ones there in Shell Beach (Central Coast CA) Art in the Park. We were running the show so we were the first ones there. That thing looked like a terminator that got hit with a missle as it rolled towards a cliff doin like 20-30 mph. My business partner me and her best friend chasing after it. The thing was destroyed before we even had a chance to use it.

HA HA HA

This is the setup I used to set up for festies... ran on 24 volt DC fans and a propane kiln so we could set up anywhere...

Agreed about setting up close people really enjoy the artist interaction. And keep in mind you will be making custom all day long... it always means a whole lot more when you saw the artist make it!!!
