View Full Version : Freezing Outside

I finally got my vent installed in the side of my garage in front of my torch and now I don't have to freeze with my Garage door fully open for air flow. It was really nice, I had a little space heater going, got the garage all warmed up, opened the window on the opposite side of the room and started working. The warmth lasted about hmmm, 30secs once I kicked that fan on. WOW the draft going across my back was cold. Not nearly as cold as being outside so to say with the garage door open, I was able to work longer in the cold, now I just need a little bit bigger heater to put in front of the window to warm up some of that air thats being sucked in from the exhaust fan.

I can work later in the evening now, woot. Just what my wife wants, for me to get home after work and school and go hide in the garage for a few hours. hehe

Man it is getting cold around here. I am in the exact same situation. I just switched from in front of the garage a few weeks ago. A couple of days ago I hooked up my fatty fans.....now it's colder than a well diggers ass in my garage. I usually bundle up pretty good to work, and I have a little heater by my feet. I'm still trying to figure out a better way to stay warm though. Maybe I just need to work behind a GTT Python. That should keep me warm!

Doesn't your wife work on the torch as well?

She does a little bit, but not as much as I do. If I had the O2 and the time I would be out there more than I should be. :eek

The best thing I did was buy an oxy Generator. I used to worry about oxy soo much. It effected my work because I hated using so much oxy for certain things. Now I rarely have to go fill up. Can't help you about the time. I'll talk to God and see what I can do.

What are IR heaters? And where do you get them? Thanks

parabolic dish heaters are very directional and very good ,, it feels like the sun is shining on you. but it doesnt really matter about drafts.
heres an example : Parabolic heater (http://http://www.epinions.com/pr-Space_Heaters-WindChaser_Oscillating_Tabletop_Far_Infrared_Parab olic_Heater_PAR201)

as well if you have a wood stove and a very direct way that incoming air enters your shop then you can go with a water holding tank over your stove as it heats the water you can pump it or syphon it to a radiator in the vent window and heat the incoming air as it enters your shop.... but this gets expencive after a while and you have to keep it stocked fairly well.

other ideas is wearing an extra layer of clothing or a cape.

they work for me in drafty houses , the one i got tends to be very directional though. but i have seen units for ware houses etc... but the amount of cash to run those off propane can be outragous.

aluminized bubblewrap is pretty awesome stuff. you can find it at menards/home depot/etc.
heating pads and electric blankets. they're the cheapest way to heat yourself. heating pads are 50W. yes, fifty. my space heater is 1000, and it's not nearly as effective since all the extra heat just blows away.
if you're a clever little monkey (i'll be one of those some day..) you can take apart an electric blanket, take out the heating wires, and sew them into one of those one piece mechanic or snowmobile type suits.
anyway.. a big ass propane heater works well, but i'm too damn cheap to pay for what those things consume.

anyway.. soon it'll get cold here too =)

When we built out shop we ran the heating through the floor (anti freeze/ water mix) and that is perfect cause it always stays warm.

We were just talking about getting an oxy generator....but I have no clue what I would need to run 3 carlisles and a delta.....

Here it is...

1. Patagonia midweight skin tight capilene long underwear.
2. Patagonia expedition weight long underwear over the mid weight.
3. Jeans over that.
4. Patagonia midweight skin tight capilene long underwear (shirt)
5. Patagonia expedition weight capilene long underwear (shirt)
6. Hooded sweatshirt over that.
7. double layers of "head" murino wool socks (don't itch at all) GET AT COSTCO

With this setup I can work down to about 0 with no issues of being too cold, without a heater.

If you do get a heater there is only one I can recommend.

It is a Presto "heat dish". They can be found at Costco. They only use 1000w and have no fan. The heat is all IR and is very nice, and easy to focus. :bounce

Good Idea guys, I'm going to build a new shop in the spring, so I might use this idea.

Yeah we are getting snow here too....can't wait for the ice so we can go ice fishing! Ours is run with a water heater. Keeps things warm and your feet are always warm! The only thing you have to be careful of is air pockets through the lines, we had to flush it a couple times before we got it right. It seems like the best thing so far....don't have to mess with a heater!

We have it pretty good, the garage we built is actually at a friends house in the sticks so he plows the driveway and we just have to shovel out the oxy house for the liquid delivery....

ive got and old wood stove heating my shop... its got the removable pot burners on top with little vent holes and when ive got the flue closed ya a little bit of smoke filled my shop... nothing the ventaliton system doesn't suck out now 10x faster.. but ya i put a big ceramic kiln plate on top to cover the holes ... all the smoke goes were its soposed to now... only problem is all the $#&% dust and ash that gets strewn about when i have to shovle it out... let alone the hourly filling and what leaves during all that time. ... heats nice though.. and my intake is right at the top of the stove pipe.. decent system minus the ash and having to get up to throw in logs and haul them in and chop em and split em before hand... think i spent 52 hours so far cuting up a tree's, spliting and stacking it... i doubt it will last a 1/4 this winter... still it gives a nice feeling and good warmth. thats just my shop... we heat our whole house that way as well... the woods provide 95% of our protein as well... but ya whatever.,. im still interested in those IR heaters

The IR heaters work great for me... but im sure they cause cancer there that good.. burn your leg off at 10 feet. the biggist problem with them is there so directional it isnt funny. you gotta sit right infront of the dish or angle it (like heating things with your torch). i believe the heat dishes are like the gtt of the space heater world.
