your reefs are gonna be corkers and your mushrooms are very nice. 4 1/2 months in? can't wait to see how it all develops, you're off to a running start.
I wish I'd had color to work with when I first started.

thanks alot for the compliments guys! sometimes when i get on here and see all the amazing work some of you can do, i get kinda critical of my own work. knowing that people like my work is what really keeps me going, next to my love of the glass! i will keep posting progress. i wont be able to work until later tonight, but i should have some new pics tommorow morning. im going to work on the flowers a little bit more and just see what else i can come up with.

alright guys.. i tried some sherlock bends last night.. none of them came out that well.. first i had trouble with the bowls, and i am slowly working that out.. now its the mouthpieces. the fume loc has a crack in it where i accidentally tagged the bowl to the inner wall. the clear one is way crooked, and the frit one has just a bit of frit near the mouthpiece not melted in.. and now for the pics.. dont laugh to hard!

talking about the knobby pipe? i just left those out like that to create an optical illusion.. when i pushed the bowl it was way thicker than it looked so i got kinda funny shaped.. the dots make it almost unnoticable..
very nice work man, pipes and pendants!

Here is my first hammer ever. its a little funky but i did the can the opposite way that i wanted on accident..

http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk181/mikeshep1/DSC03475.jpg
hammer # 2. much better i think.. until it cracked.. i let it get to cold while working the weld and got a wicked crack across the front of the can, all the way to the weld. got it worked out in the back half, but it separrated in the front of it, so i just cut it of the point and threw it in the kiln without even doing the bowl or anything.

Very cool. :]
i know its been a while but next time a bubbler or pipe cracks, like the second bubbler with no bowl, just use some 3mil over the cracks and viola(will someone please spell check this for me) its fixed!! well not fixed but it will seal up. so after you melt it in and puff it again it should be fine. now you just need to know how to hide the repair...

some new stuff. best wigwag ive done so far. i havent done many at all or any on tube yet. im about to try a few on tube though and see what i can come up with. also my first attempt at a sidecar, and a few rings. the sidecar is still on the blowtube. sooo.. while i was working on it, it cracked where my cold seal was on it. i finished the weld and took the punty off afterwards. as i took the punty off it pulled a hole out of the side of the can.. it was thick too.. so when that happened it cracked out of each side of the hole, spiraling all the way up the bowl. i got them worked out, coverd the hole with clear and put it in the kiln. As it was heating up i made a marble to put over the clear spot, pulled it out attached marble and noticed another crack near the bowl. i worked that crack out and popped the carb. I was hurrying to get it back in the kiln and forgot to polish the carb hole. now this is where i need help. the crack is worked out, but there is still a mark there that seems like it would crack again easily while bringing into the flame. does anyone have any tips on doing this without cracking it? VERY SLOWLY im assuming, but anything else i should be aware of? i got pics of the mark in ? down a bit.. thanks..

preheat the piece to 1150 in the kiln before going back to the flame with it...all crack repairs should be done after bringing up to 1150 it makes the glass way more stable to work with.. only work your crack for a minute or two before going back in the kiln for a few minutes to even out the temp...also you will want to melt in that marble attachment on the can more you are looking for the glass to flow together no acute angles, lots of stress in those angles.. Looking Good Dood! Keep on Torching!

So yesterday i went up and saw the guy who taught me and got a few more tips on the sidecar. I came home and started to try and fix it up. all went great! i got the marble melted on alot better, redid the carb, and worked the stem to can weld a bit more and took it off the blowtube. went perfect. then i did a 2 piece sherlock. stacked 3 sections for the can, just to try it. i didnt really worry about how clean the linework was, just wanted to do it. got a pretty decent weld on the stem. then i took the broken hammer from a few pages back, the one with the hole in the front of the can, and tried to fix it. i put the blowtube on and the mouthpiece broke off. it was a clean break so i put it together and tried to fix it. went pretty well, its a little crooked now but its fixed so whatever. got it hot, worked out the cracks, filled the hole with clear, and stuck some big marbles over it to kinda hide it. then i went back to the weld, made it nice and smooth. getting the hang of them. pulled it off blowtube and kilned it. they all came out of the kiln just fine..

Thanks all.
Hippi ,
its a dry piece and its just really heavy silver fume. the airtrap was done with an indent tool. you can also do them by poking little indents with your tungsten pick, dot the indents then implode.
Hard at it there Sweney. A good battle is always a learning exp and lesson with a side order of frustration.
Just recently I started doing drop hammers, one piece jobs.
Kinda fun you prob already have done them but you make a spoon shape with a huge head, Then paddle kinda flat turn on side and heat and drop bottom and puff shape your bowl push area.
In the time it took me to work my welds in a year ago I can make a drop one piece now.
just having fun and glad to be back on the forum nice to talk and have a good day

thanks guys,
hippi,
To do the air traps i get a gather hot, let it cool to kinda get a skin over the glass, then press it on the indent tool. then just add dots of color and implode. i guess you would technically(sp.) call it a compression because i do them on rod, but whatever. if you dont have an indent tool, just be real careful to keep heat off of the indents you already made with your tungsten pick. Then you can fume it and dot with clear or color, or just dot with color and implode.

Try heating a lot of the neck at a time and pull really slowly, just don't heat til the point it droops. It is the way I keep mine a little thick and also the way I keep my tube pulls good and thick as well.

thanks guys. heres some new pendants and a side car i made for a friend. the little funky spot on the can is because i tried to blow the carb right there forever and it was too thick to pop it, so i just put it on the stem. still works ok.

can you explain the term blow in to me?
kind regards
CheeseNip
05-03-2010, 10:35 AM
sure. to do a blow in take a piece of clear tube, flare it out a little bit. then either take a piece of cobalt tube or coil some color on the end of a blow tube, get it really hot, making sure to keep your clear cup hot too. stuff the color into the clear cup and blow into it to color the inside of the tube. hope that helps, Im not very good at explaining things through typing.
A lotta nice work Rusty, really diggin those fume implosions. :)
Not to hijack, but steak, here's a good blow in tutorial with pics dbDom did http://www.talkglass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18091&highlight=BLOW-IN+TUTORIAL

ok thank you very much i get the idea but do you do it cause its faster then encasing with clear(striping down, coilpotting) or do you get a special effect
i laso think its hard not to touch the sides of the flared clear
i think i ll try it
thank you very much
kind regards frank
CheeseNip
05-04-2010, 11:17 AM
yeah it takes some practice to not touch the clear, but you'll get it after a few tries. you can get some really cool effects with blow ins. you can fume then trap some small air bubbles when you do the blow in and you get a really cool effect. thanks guys. i was gonna find that blow in tut by dom and i forgot.

i like that first pendent a lot.
and if i can ask..what are you using to pour frit inside your piece? everything i find is either to big to small.
CheeseNip
05-12-2010, 10:46 PM
thanks. to pour your frit, take a piece of 9.5 tube, blow a bubble on the end and pop a big hole in the side of it to make kinda a spoon, but deeper. they look alot like those "oil burners" that tweakers use but with a bigger hole. they work well though.

Also started working on sherlocks more. still only done a few of them though. plus tried my first donut the other night. the stem with the donut is gonna be turned into a 2 piece shirly.
