Well since everyone else is doing it....

First a little about me.

I started working with glass when I was 10 and worked on it for a couple of years making unicorns, ships, bird baths, humming birds and the typical stuff you see. The only color I ever seen was cobalt so everything I made was spun or solid clear. I loved working with glass but I was pushed to make things to sell, go to craft shows and all that crap. This took all of the fun out of it and made it feel like a job so when I was about 16 (after working on and off, usually cramming before a craft show) I just stopped, besides chasing girls became more important.

I then got married, built a house, had a kid, and all that. A couple years ago I dug out my torches and got set up again. I then found this site and started reading up and was amazed by the colors and techniques I was seeing. I bought some color and started playing around.

Unlike most of those on this site glass is now just a hobby (more like a passion) for me and not my occupation. This has it's good points and it's bad points but mostly good (for me anyway). The good is that it is never "work", its all PLAY time for me:bouncy: I make whatever I want when ever I want. The bad however is I never truly get good at any one thing, I don't make 100 of anything (nor do I want to) so I do not get to the point where I am truly proficient. This is not the best way to learn but it is best for me and keeps it fun. The only customers I have are a flock of nieces, friends and family (I give almost everything away).

Any way here's some of my crappy pics (my camera does not have a macro setting).

Yay Bob has a work thread!!! Let me be the first to reply! I really dig the hell out of the sculptural work. I'd like to have you show me some sculptural techniques next time we meet up! The marbles are sweet too! Are the first ones with the oyster knife? Def good to see some of your work and am looking forward to seeing more. And we really gotta get together soon now that I got a bigger o2 tank. I'm crankin the shit outa my torch now!! Talk to you later!!

Looks good bob got some cool stuff there.. and I hear ya on not a job thats what keeps it fun for me, like a side job, if you like you buy hehe , just keep trying new stuff one day i might do 100 of somethin .. but I doubt it..

09-27-2009, 07:48 PM
Thanks Keith, Ya I used the oyster knife, but you can use anything to push the glass around. It's just comfortable to use.

And Crip, some of that stuff is coming your way. Not the checked vortex, LOL, the wife said it was pretty that way.

Oh yeah, I dunno if this won't work without a macro setting but why don't you try making a light box? Just a box, white t shirt and white paint or poster board will work. I made mine out of wood, just cuz I had the extra time. Just a suggestion if you start putting up more pics. It really helps and is very convenient!

Good to see some of your work. I too have been making glass for fun for the past 8 monts or so, But I am going back into production mode with it again. Gonna see if I can make some money without makin pipes. Sure has been fun to make whatever kinds of things come to mind though. Keep up the good work and keep posting your goods!!

OK, keep in mind this is a hobby so I only get to make things when I have extra time (not much lately).

These are both sitting on a 6x6 in case you want a reference for size.

First is a tiara I made for my niece, she just turned 3. It's for the shelf, not to wear.

Second item is a humming bird I made for the GLDG birthday. The HBird is just setting in the flower, kind of hanging there. It's gotta be shipped so I was afraid it would break.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate it. I'm never happy with anything I make, I always see what's wrong with it or what I should of done differently.

Keith, glad to hear you're getting wheels. What are you getting? I'd be down for another road trip, just let me know when:hotrod:

One of my best "customers" showing off the tiara I made for her, she has quite the collection started. I have 6 little nieces who only want things from fairy tales (princesses, unicorns, ballerinas, etc..), and only one older one that likes jewelry.

Finally got some time to fire up the torch a bit this weekend. I've been spending all my free time getting my plow tuck (72 Chevy SWB) together. It's done now so hopefully more time for glass.:bouncy:

First up is a little pendant I made for a lady I work with, actually for her son (he loves planes).

Second up is a marble I made for the guy that first got me into glass. Yea, the pics suck, flower is actually yellow and black LOL.

Crip, I was confused by your post until I googled "mirage 2000", LOL. First thing that came to my mind was your torch:D

Spent a couple hours on the torch tonight. Made a stand for the marble I made this weekend (turned out nice), and some pendants. I'll post up some more pics tomorrow when I take em out of the kiln.

haha, that's funny shit bob. We should get together sometime this month. I'm really lookin to do sculptural work and was thinkin you could show me a tip or two. I got contemporary lampworking for xmas, def has some good stuff in it.

I'm waiting on my oxy reg to get fixed(hole in the diaphragm), the reg guy at airgas gets in on Monday, so I'm thinkin it might be a week or two. If you got an extra oxy reg, we could def get together before then, if not, I'll let you know when I'm all fixed up!

I also cut my bench shorter so we can sit too! Standing all day wasn't cuttin it. Even with a kitchen mat!

Here's my number 428-6992, give me a call whenever you want to get together. I'm free almost all the time, still no job! haha Which I will take! Gives me more time to melt!!

We should get together sometime this month. I'm really lookin to do sculptural work and was thinkin you could show me a tip or two.

Well yesterday I loaded up a couple torches, tanks, and some rod and headed out to FGA's house. Had a great day other than the cold (20 degrees at best and I'm a frackin' freeze baby). I must say I really have no idea how you guys work standing up let alone with out any heat:puzzled: I find both to be very difficult to deal with, and made a lot of janky shit. I did learn that I can still spin a rod while wearing gloves:D

We did not focus on making any really cool things just spent the day going over some simlpe sculpty stuff, some weaving techniques, and some critters.

I planned on taking more pics but I kind of forgot. Maybe FGA could post some more.

Here's FGA, smiling like a MOFO.

my shop is a garage. i got on of those heaters that sit on the propane tank and has two pie plate looking things. it was like 80 bucks, the smaller one is like 39$. between that in back of you and the torch in front its not bad even when its really cold. rips though the propane though.
Bob maybe we can hang out soon too. i never learned any sculpure work and it would be soo good for me to learn. i was not sure what u ment by spun- is that like the flower and the base of the bird?

Sure, I would love to hang out with anyone that's into glass.

And spun to me is just woven, or lacework. There are several different types of stitches.

Here's a couple of videos that explain it better than I could in text.
Crazy4glass (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jstcFFekCCY&feature=related) and another (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-go3ZTLAnGc&feature=related) one from him.
Timia Glass (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAGnUH3k0o8)

Some books to check out, don't forget to try your local library. Mine is able to get books from others in their network. Contemporary Lampworking v2 has a brief description of loop stitches as well as Creative Glass (http://cgi.ebay.com/CREATIVE-GLASS-BLOWING-Decorative-and-Scientific_W0QQitemZ220548062307QQcmdZViewItemQQpt ZUS_Nonfiction_Book?hash=item3359b05c63)(mostly scientific) and the Homer Hoyt book (http://cgi.ebay.com/Glassblowing-Homer-L-Hoyt-Introduction-to-Glassblowing_W0QQitemZ320480236189QQcmdZViewItemQQ ptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item4a9e1c529d) (this is a pretty good book).

but yours looks so much like his from what I could tell from the pics...

Uh oh, hope I'm not biting on him.

Just kidding, I haven't seen any of his ships but most spun boats are made with the same basic shape, mines nothing new. Lay the keel, either round rod or wiped followed by some weaving for the boat, add a mast, some rigging and walla a ship. I think the same basic shape was in one of the books I have (possibly the Creative Glass one).

The real difference is usually in the quality. Mine are a bit sloppy (especially that one) but I've seen some that looked like they were done with a machine, that's impressive and comes with a LOT of practice. I'm willing to bet Roger's are perfect.

Glad you liked those, they are very fond memories for me.

I wish I would of found this site long ago, I worked with clear and solid rod until only a few years ago. You don't know how much difference a little color makes, I had a piece of cobalt that I hoarded for years and only used it for eyeballs and whatnot.
