View Full Version : Face Shield or Blast Shield?
So which do you prefer? I have been looking at both and am having a hard time deciding. I move around a lot while working, so I was thinking a face shield would be a little better and wouldn't get in the way as much. Only one I have found is THIS (http://www.winshipdesigns.com/home2/ws3/page_18729_45/shade_5__gold_coated_faceshield.html)
Ideally I would not want to have to where glasses under it, and I think that is possible with the one linked above.
Any others out there?
Peace

I love my blast shield marver. I do have a face shield as well, that I bust out from time to time when going really big, but it's waaay too hot for regular use.

I don't like the blast shield glass sticking up from the marver, the way I work, it gets in the way of bringing the blow pipe to my mouth.
which is more comfortable? i have both and prefer the blast shield big time.

I thought the face shield was cool because i have bad vision, and could bring my face closer to the piece i was working. But the blast shield was nice too, for making something that still pumps out heat, but isnt too big. Both are cool in my book.

i have both, only use the blastsheild now.. used the faceshield for a few years. you have to wear, at least dydidium type glasses under the shield. even the "didydium" shield doesn't block much of the sodium flare.

I vented my a/c to come above my bench through a tube and cut a slit in it to provide an air curtain that comes down onto me from above my torch basically acts like a blast shield but doesn't have any surface and doesn't affect the flame at all. I use it when its really hot outside all the time, or just when I am using the big flame for an extended amount of time. No more sweaty armpits, and I don't melt my glasses anymore. its very effective and also provides me with quick way to cool down sections of glass quickly before garaging them. One 18,000 btu ac provides more than enough force to cool three stations in my shop.
Thanks for all the response, I am leaning more towards the blast shield for sure. The only reason I am hesitating on it is because my torch is sitting out from the bench and I stand on the sides of the torch a lot of the time. The blast shield only protects if you are directly behind the torch right? I think I saw one on there that pivots, I'll have to check out there site more.
Peace
Nate
Yea its only for when you stand behind it, but when you are stading on the side there isnt that much heat anyway.
It helps a shit load when you make big stuff like tube pulls etc.

I think blast shield has an extender thing you can get. I have blast shield on both my torches and never use it. I have the face shield also. I use it for tube pulls or large prep. Works awesome.

Blast Shield all the way! I use them both. The blast Shield for everyday use, and I slap on my face shield when going big. I dont melt my face shield any more now that I have the Blast Shield. I have it on the quick-connect setup, so I can rapidly remove it when needed. ( but I typically always have it in place) I also have the dual channel so I can insert a shade 3 back plate when I am working with really bright colors all day. ( I dont use it all the time, but its nice to have when needed)

Huh, from what I see - it's a personal choice.
