Snake, it's all done with smokescreens and mirrors!
Better pics would be nice, Jes, but it looks like you're developing these nicely. I'd like to see a pic of the one in the first pic on the bottom right.
HI everyone, I am exited to show my new ones of yesterday's little progress, I have included more techniques into each, its intense and surreal and pleasing to be practicing try'n making universes and space systemz..... Also using all the frit and rod colors and seeing what works out for different sorts of features is great fun too! The glow powder was poured out and when I added to the pile, green and blue where mixed together and it accidentally made really awesome glowndark colors and patterns, I have been able to put cyanite in them too and that is some more minerals from this earth, also gold and silver fuming and knocking it off and such....Also 2 day ago I started with 10ml rod, yesterday 19ml today mabey back it up to 15 for me I hope to try the biggest diameter I have 1.77 inch after gathering my chi and practicing for a few more days. hopefully have them to show thank you very much for comments I know the picture quality needs improvement, my spellin, sentence structure aint the best either but I will try an improveverything more....What I really want and hope is to improve this tech, to a decent level at least even for practicing.... I would like to see your pictures of your practicing's too Adam (I got to learn alot about this technique in kansas because mr. recko was their at the marble show!!!!! He's too cool and nice, talented, everything you know) I hope everyone who would ever want to try this kind, dose, the planet in the 1st one I tried to make a little earth but it is very hard if you look for it you can see a piece of cyanite floatin next to it .... please look, many thanks, jes

heres mine from awhile back
good morning time, here are the new ones from yesterday they are actually around 2.5 inch. I feel I am improving in slow progression with practice like the birds and everything but it is all very very hard just step by step time after time, I will keep trying.... They glow too if anyone want to see glow in dark picture for fun???????????Thank you for showing yours bryan, i wanna see everything its encouraging & helps make me think allot more...... big thanks, jes
looking good, keep it up. great progression in your work

Looking better! Ill have some pictures up soon, just waiting on my camera battery to get here....
Highest,
Here are the last of my practices the last one has an opal shpere a peice of moldivite, an opal incased in uranium tube, an opal chunk floating in the middle of kyanite chunks& splinters, glow n dark blue & green , silver & gold fuming and knocking, a dicroicgallaxy, DA dicro-rainbow-4mill rods, disco sparkle, fools gold. and 2 spinning frit icepick implosions or compressions also 4 3d planets & 7rl background planets and moons, and some swirls and stuff too.... I am really happy with the progress and have been wanting to through all these little thing I had around into something that was my personal (best yet) I dont take the best pictures, their are other glass artists around town too that can attest to what is in these, I am also going to put high price on the best one so I will more then likely have it for the next year or so, so hopefully many glass artists will see it in person and with the blacklight and all, and if someone dose get it then what I do is make another best yet one, thats how I started making these ones.... I am moving on to some more sculptural things for a few days or so and will be putting together some Native American dancers I have a hoop dancer that I have been working on trying to make look good. Thank you very much for everything, jes
also if you look the ruler its bigger then before, heres some closer pics!!!!

Looks good, if I had any critique though they seem a bit busy. Maybe a bit more negative space and less planets. Seriously they are definately not the easiest of marbles to pull off so great job!

Best part of these type marbles is you can never get a duplicate. I know everyone has there own technique going about it. I love a heavy silver fume, then burning it off around the planets, I think just a moldavite as astroids, and a shooting star would look very cool.

this is going to come off really harsh so please excuse my tone as best as you can, as i can't really come up with a better way to say it.
when i look at these, all i can think is "that's the most blatant rip off of Gateson Recko's work" including his title of the series. i think it's very important to make work your own. find your own niche and rock the shit out of it. even if you just use these as a jumping off platform to explore the technique, you can still add your own twist.
i really do apologize for just coming off like an ass and not just giving you a compliment on the progression of your work, but it's just an honest critique, not a personal attack
GEEEZ !
I guess I should prolly call them Cosmic Marbles from now on.
Thanks J Howard, I have tons of respect for you, I dont mean or intend to rip anyones flavor off. I never thought anyone would think anything of them!
I just thought I would show peeps some things I was proud to accomplish and going back to the place he showed all of us during the Gateson class gave me more energy to make the marbles he called" Universe marbles" & Seriously from now on I will only call them Cosmic Marbles or CM's get it See Em's just thought that up, unless anyone knows a reason that may be a bad idea, if another person has Cosmic Marbles or CM's I will then think of another name?
I dont mean to offend anyone, just love making glass on my torch. Hopefully the rest of the world will either like them or not like them based on what they are.
I got to learn the tech from Gateson a couple years ago at moon marble co. in Kansas, and I still love trying this tech and dont think I will ever stop making them because I like to.
I am really developing my own voice too. I have been learning many different things from many different people and REALLY am working on making objects that are my own. I think this will take time to develop, so please be patient as I improve and refine what skills I do have.
Much Respect thanks for digging up this old post...

Jes man i think you can make what ever you please and practicing on some things you learned from an artist in a class is a great way to get really comfortable with some techniques, comfortable enough to give your own flavor. Keep torchin boss

i don't think it's offensive, i'm just keeping you on your toes. the best thing you can do as an artist is defend your work. ***** AND, there's nothing wrong with taking a class and learning methods along the way, you just have to disclaim it as a learning experience if you post it. perhaps i'm jaded right now. i'm at the rosen show (one of the wholesale shows), and i'm seeing the same crap over and over. even 5 years ago, it seemed like there was 10x more variety, not just a bunch of blatant chihuly rip offs. the glass world is monkey see monkey do, to the point of it being very hard to tell anyone's work apart sometimes. if you see something drastically different here, and you ask them how their show is going, far more often than not, they're doing much better than the others. if i'm making you or anyone think about this, i've done my job.
much love and respect to all y'all, i wish nothing more than your ultimate success!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what's worked for me is being as different as possible. know what people are doing so you don't re invent the wheel! there's so many things you can do, start with those that aren't being done yet. i wish i had all the time in the world to do all the things in my head, let alone try the stuff others are playing with. knock em dead jes!

oh, and ps....this is (your uncle?) bob palusky's advice i'm passing along. i've had the best teachers... it's not like i'm even remotely self taught at all. paying it forward, it works. lol, just noticed how old this thread is! bet you're light years ahead

yeah i was gonna say shiiiiit, i wanna learn how to do this too
OK, thanks again
Jason, I know, I was actually imagining Robert was telling me the stone cold truth when I read your post.
I know you wont steer me wrong, I really will and do listen and take your advise and wont take it for granted either.
Allot of times I am practicing making the items that I have been shown how and it helps when its time to make the items I have in my head that I wanna get out into the glass. This process is taking along time and their is so many old and new things to learn and so many ideas to explore, if we could only have many lifetimes to spend on making glass!
Yes, my new Cosmic Marbles are way better, I took lucid visions advice and am just putting in a few inclusions and systems instead of having them with so much going on, it was hard to see everything... I am also very proud of them and have to date sold all of them I had made:bouncy: except of course the new ones I just made for the KC show
Thanks again and please never hesitate to speak up and voice your opinions or feelings or realizations, it has helped me to progress my own ideas and become a better all around artist not only now but in the past you have given insightful words to think about too.

Nice work Jes, and Howard... open up your mind.
how is it not open? because i didn't just compliment him on a successful copy, including a trademarked name? or that i think the glass world is too self copying as a whole? please explain.
for the record, i am NOT saying that you can't try techniques and use what they have to offer. what i AM saying is that you have to be careful of how you do it. you have to ask yourself what you want your work to ultimately be- a direct copy of someone else's work, or original work that's influence by a certain technique. if you make or post work that is a direct copy of someone else's, but you give credit to the originator and say you did this as an excercise in technique (especially when you took their class), that's fine. if you do not, you claim it as your own; and that's plagiarism.
http://www.plagiarism.org/plag_article_what_is_plagiarism.html
i'm sorry if you find this close minded, if anything i'm encouraging you (all) to find your own voice, and not be copy cats. go ahead and make universe styled marbles, it's a cool technique, and they look great. just try and find something along the way that makes them yours and rock it.
props to jes for taking an honest critique like a champ, including repping me for it too, that wasn't necessary.

Looks Hot I love them.....I don't see how this is copying anyone.... it's just a style isn't it??? I saw my buddy making these and solid planet marbles 11 years ago..everything including style and techniques are taken from other artist in some way

Gonna close this for a bit... this conversation got too heated, and the name calling and personal insults started to flow.
The parties involved acted poorly and let emotion (and probably lack of sleep) get the better of them.
This is an OLD thread, everything that needed to be said back then was said, and then some.
We've all got better things to do these days!
