View Full Version : 38 or 31
so i have a bunch of 50 heavy and i am tired of doing pulls on 1 inch. should i get 38 or 31 mil to fit into the 50 heavy. or would it be more economical to do iso pulls on the 50 saving time and gas in exchange for the extra glass per tube pull. i have a tiger shark and k tanks if that makes a difference

I use 38x4 inside 50x5 when I do smaller pulls. You have to marver it down a tad but it fits snug which makes your sleeving easier, cleaner and faster. If you're using 50x4 you probably won't have to marver it down, plus I apply 2 to three layer of color for overlays so if you're only doing one layer it won't be as big.
You get bigger yields than you would with I/O ( plus it's less likeley to crack on you, and if does it's easier to fix) because of the extra clear on the inside, and your color goes a lot further. A tiger Shark can rock these no problem.
Good luck

^^^what he said. I use 38x4 in 50x5 all the time for my pulls. Just got a bunch of 44 though so think I will use that in 60mm instead to get larger yields.

depends on the type of tube pulls. I like to tube encase 32mm thin wall, then sleeve that in the 50. by the time you add the color to the 32, it will fit snugly into the 50. you will probably have to marver it just a bit.

Petto, I am getting around 1 1/2 lb yields from my pulls. I am using a 44x4 (soon to be 44x5) 8" blank that I line down about 5 1/2", and sleeve with a 6" sleeve. I have it dialed so I use the smallest sleeve I can for the yield, so I don't waste much 60x5. I know you didn't ask, just figured it may help for you to know what to expect from your yields. Keep in mind, I do 2 to 3 layers of color so depending on the layers, it can change the yield by a few ounces.

^^thanks frankie. I usually only do one layer of color but it is 4-6mm thick. Pretty much dropping rod on the tube nice and thick. Thanks for the specs, it gives me an idea of what to expect.
ive gotten into a habbit of smashing a gather of color into a disk then pulling it into a flat stringer. it works well with some colors that dont thin. gets a nice thin wide layer of color that doesnt require a big flame to lay on or melt in. i havent tried it on 50 yet so im not sure how well it works for that

I believe what Frankie and I are referring to is taking a solid 7mm rod of color and striping the outside of a 38mm tube and then marvering it down a little and then sleeving it in 50mm tube. So no stringers with this method.

Here is a good link to what I am trying to say: http://www.glasspipes.org/Gal21009_pullin_color_tubing..asp. Thanks to Arty for the step by step.
