So this past weekend me and a buddy were fortunate enough to be able to fly to the great state of Oregon to take some lessons with the man himself, Darby. The night we got in, I wasn't expecting much, but the shop was alive with crucible dipping. Darby and shop mates were pulling black tubing, rod, ribbon, and stringers of all sizes. The next day (first official work day) involved stick stacking, a tid bit of goblets, reversal assembly, and general line work for the most part, with a bit of gong thrown in. Day three I learned hopefully all I'll need to know to assemble an inline, including tack welding (something I've been NEEDING to start doing) and general dynamics and construction, as well as how to throw dope sections into one, and how to work opals. On the last day, he packed in as many tidbits to show me as possible, including how to make a proper triple donut, more on gong work, and many great shop tips. Oh yeah and got me dying for a kobuki.
I have many pics, but can't upload them yet, but definitely will when I have time. For now, I have one pic of the first piece I made when I got back in town, 100% Darby inspired (Minus the dope reversals haha) Sleeved amber purple tubing, dragon eye honey comb, and triple passion/dragon eye spiral horns. Most fun I've had making a piece in a while, and I was lucky enough to salvage a crack near all the horns before finishing it. Thanks to Darby for a killer weekend. I'll be back for more asap.
Thanks for looking
I couldn't post the direct link for some reason. it's the bottom pic.
