yet another hobbyist inspired by the all-stars that frequent this site

i usually stick to pendants & marbles but I made these over the last few months

i made 3 previous spoons so this represents 4 thru 20 and sidecars bubblers 1 & 2

you gotta be careful with this glass thing, it's addictive

wow, they look like you've done tons of them. Even the hammers look really well done I love the colors used on the bigger one, it just flows from one end to the other. I bet they sell quick, and yes glass is addictive!

thanks for the kind words

the varying colors on the bigger hammer are unfortunately due to a lack of being able to maintain a sufficiently oxidizing flame using 2 concentrators on a phantom (regalia for the inner and a hurricane on the outer). plenty of heat but they're no match for tanked pressures and highly saturated silver colors frequently get reduced and muddy.

being a hobbyist and never having sold a piece to a shop/person, any words of advice? i've read a lot of threads containing good advice about "pre-shopping" stores to know their price range and what products they might be interested in (ie. currently don't have any of) which would apply if I was looking for a steady place to sell to. ideally i'd just like to empty my tiny case and get a few bucks to reinvest in some new colors.

thanks in advance

killer pieces, love the two in the center and the hammers. no advice on sales im in the same boat another month or two and I should be good enough to explore some sales outside of friends. keep it up they look really good to me.

Love that cobalt spoon. Did you use butterscotch or caramel and then cover it with clear for the accent color? That's one of my favorite color combos, and people always seem to notice those ones right away.

just make sure you set your prices before you go in. i always will give them a dollar of each piece if they buy a certain amount of pieces or dollar amount. so you may want to include that in your original price.. just dont let them low ball you..

wow... really diggin that cobalt spoon with the green in it and the big bubbler....
For someone who usually only does pendants and marbles, your pipes are very well crafted... I'm sure that they will fetch more than a fair price (or trade 'em for safety breaks)

oh and I am attempting to pipe; seeing yours makes me want learn pendants and marbles :) (you seem to have good control of that phantom!)

heh, wish i had the kind of contacts necessary to make the trade you suggested

yeah, my path in glass has been interesting. started with some scientific work (helped my control, seals, and understanding of heat base a lot), then marbles/pendants (color, stringers, etc.). whatever is next is sure to be a good time

Here's what I did when I began selling to shops. I got a nice case together, like 10-15 chillys, 10 spoons, some sherlocks, and got some business cards made to make yourself look a little more established. Now, I just made the prices very simple, 10 for chillums, 15 for spoons, 20 for shirlys. Or even do this, 15 for chillys, 20 for spoons, etc... then say "if you buy at least ten pieces, I'll drop the prices down 5 bucks a piece". My first trip to headshops, I sold all my pieces to two different head shops and made 300 bucks on roughly 25 pieces.

So just be really nice, price your pieces at a reasonable price, but still works for you. For instance, I sell a bowl for 15, cost me 4 bucks to make, that gives me lil over 200 percent profit...now the shop will go around and sell it for 35 bucks, that gives them 110 percent profit. I made 11 bucks, they made 20, but I still made more profit than them so that's what satisfies me. And also, ask them if they want you to come in every week or 2 weeks. You never know, every head shop is different. I've already successfully sold to three shops where I live, and have more to go to. So just feel confident in your work that it is worthy enough to sell to a headshop, then it'll go alot easier. It also helps to get a reciept book. Anything to look more professional other than just some stoner dude trying to sell pipes. Goodluck man!

makes perfect sense, they call that a "kick". pick up any bottle you own, (shampoo, bud light, astro-glide, etc.) and check out the bottom. chances are they all have a kick. is that light cobalt tubing? looks really good in the pics.

thanks for the terminology! ... i'll hafta check my bottle of 'glide :D

both the can and stem are cobalt over clear (cobalt 5 I believe). a little fume (silver and gold) and some 4 mil can create some fun effects.

you got it. one thing to be mindful of is to keep all the squiggles sufficiently warm while laying them down to prevent cracks from developing when you go to melt everything in (and burn off excess fume)

Wow! Very nice flower implosions!! That's like 5 times as many stripes I put on my pedals!!

Pipes are looking very nice also!! I really like the amber purple wrap and rakes. Very clean rakes. The only suggestion I would make is it make the hole in the bowls a lil bigger. More like the size of that blue and yellow one. Are you using a tungsten to poke the holes? I would say maybe use a thicker diameter rod if that's your route. I'm a popper. Constant flow on here actually puts some clear around the hole and melts it in to add some glass to the hole and reinforces it when you push the bowl. But other than that I wouldn't have any other criticism at all! Good work!!

Damn I didn't even see those jars back there!! Fuckin awesome!!

thanks for the comps - the eggs were split up and all but one went to each family that attended easter dinner. mom didn't get her first choice so i hafta make at least one more really nice one. it'll be a little while before i have time behind a torch but i'll try to get some pics before it moves to her house.

the egg that came home with me was the white one second from the right which cracked the next day. it was china white w/ amber purple spots - second thing i've made with china white that has busted. ultimately, i'm just glad no one else took it home and that all the others are still in tact.

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_UOZUoAPHQxY/TBbCeDfc68I/AAAAAAAAACA/T6OA9nrcm0M/s800/2.png

i'm not sure about this gray. it's borostix and develops an interesting matte finish / sandblasted-like texture after it's been worked. while it's a pretty stiff color i think i might have an idea for an interesting piece. anyone know if the texture/finish indicates the structural integrity is compromised?

i didn't know how the color combo would turn out but the green one ended up looking like a lemon-lime soda can

thx. you can't tell from the pics but the colored sections have a subtle sparkle that pops in sunlight.

thx everyone. other than my wife, you're the only people who see my work (pipes) - it means a lot that people in the biz thinks it's progressing and worthy of a comment.

stroker - with the problems you and swampy are having i'm gonna have to change my image host to a more reliable service.

Hey adam ,

Really great work man. I just love your layering. It has that hotshop glassblowing "wet" quality and sheen to it. Beautiful.

Are all of these done on your phantom with 2 concentrators?

I've really been dreaming of not having to buy o2 again. I'm paying 35 a T tank plus 8.50 rental per tank. b.s!

Do you notice any limitations with your concentrators besides the less oxidizing environment for certain colors?

Thanks a bunch, and keep rockin!

thanks for checking my stuff out.

most of the work was done using a phantom with the centerfire (lynx) powered by a regalia (10 lpm, 7-9 psi) and the outerfire powered by a hurricane (15 lpm, 20 psi). the sieve bed on my hurricane recently crapped out and the last post features pieces done with just the lynx/regalia - big melts took significantly longer but it really made me appreciate and use the heat base.

as you mentioned, (underpowered) concentrators make it more difficult to create and maintain the oxidizing atmosphere required to properly work reduction sensitive colors (ex: exotics, blue moon, black lightning, blue caramel, certain blacks, etc.). it can also be difficult to completely burn off the surface haze on heavily saturated striking colors (DAP). lastly, chrome based colors (unobtainium) require care and will crack if reduced.

one positive is that it is easy to find flames that allow me to work cadmium colors and steel wool without boiling.

concentrators aren't for everyone and (when they're underpowered) can definitely make working glass more difficult.
