Check out this sugarblowing video from the streets of Beijing. Wasn't Wonka talking about trying to do this at AGI a few years ago? Hopefully he sees this thread/video.

Streets of China are often filled with lots of vendors and some of them are true talented artists.
Look at this amazing man making sugar figures with melting brown sugar. His technique is quite similar to glassblowing. It is said that this folk art is from Song dynasty, and at that time it was called sugar opera.
The sugar-figure blowing is a traditional folk art of Beijing. It has a long history while it is gradually disappearing. These artists skillful technique shows beauty and magic...
Have any of you ever tried this? I wish I could work this way with hot glass without burning my hands... someday that will be a reality with some special gloves.:) Imagine a sugar pipe that you can eat afterward.....:D
Cool vid, looks like something fun to try.

No need to imagine, most head shops are carrying these now:

Before i quit culinary school, we had a day of working with sugar in the lab. Sugar sculptures are used as garnishes and there are also competitions just like with the chocolate sculptures. The blowing was done using a heat lamp and a small hand pump similar to a blood pressure cuff. Food coloring was mixed in with the sugar.

i have wondered about using the kitchen oven as a crucible furnace, the hair dryer and or heat gun as a torch and glory hole; and work sugar or some other substance like soft glass. isomalt looks promising. practice the skills without the expense.

I've tried it but without much luck. Of course, I was just doing it on my own with no training.
I've been wanting to really learn it for a while now...

wow that sugar blowing is cool as hell. How did he start his blowtubes? I can't even fathom that...
He makes a dent in it and fold it over so the dent is now an air void and he pinches off a pcs of the side and pulls it out in to a blow tube.
I really like seeing how he does a few things that if one were Professionally taught to do it hear would be told is imposable and don't work.
Like for one him using just plain brown sugar instead of glucose and sugar.
But the best was seeing him blow it directly without a pump. Here someone is taught that because of humidity in breath it just can't be done and to not even try. lol lol lol Yet this guy don;t seem to be having problem with it,
Proving the fact thats some thing is imposable if some one was taught it is but yet very possible to do by some one that was not limited by being taught some thing is imposable that very well is.
The places that teach it over there must not do a lot of sales on the tools and equipment like they do here. Other wise he would of been taught that it can only be done with this or that tool item # x,y, or z lol lol lol
Some times self taught can have its advantages.

I'm sure that's what he was referring to, not the things the artisan is making. Check my previous post in this thread.

WOw I can say one thing about using brown suger for pulled suger.
I tried a small batch the other night and let me just say it tastes like freaking dirty ass.
oh crap was it disgusting tasting. It was also the kind of taste that just stayed and stayed to.
Seriously I'm not sure I would do that again if some one paid me to taste a pcs.
