OK, so here's the deal.
I have about 30 Lbs of Exp Green 5 Seconds that were just unearthed in my shop.
When we moved into this shop about 4.5 months ago we put some boxes over out of the way and they were forgotten until a couple of weeks ago. When we opened them up and realized it was the elusive Exp Green 5 I was flabbergasted!
I have been calling Northstar on a regular basis to see if they were going to be making any more and have been told that it is on the back burner for a while and don't know when (or if) it will be available again.
Prices are as follows
$40/lb - up to 4.75 Lbs
$36/lb - 5 Lbs-9.75 Lbs
$32/lb - 10 Lbs and up
When it is gone it is gone.

it might just be me, but I bought these 2nds from you like 7 months ago I cant get anything good out of them. The came in a bundle of shorts, and they were real poppy when you put them in the flame. I have let a few other people in our shop try them out and no one got anything good. The rods almost look like they are blue, but they do come out green when put on thin. I am not upset or anything, as they cost me $12 or something like that, but I just wanted to share my experiance.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but the exp green #5 has only existed as seconds. It was an experiment. I got a couple of pounds also and find it 50/50 as to getting rods not to pop all the way to the end. Just a little seedy. I can get some rods to pop just making a torch sound with my mouth.
I do like the green , however. So, the price was right when I got mine, and having read about it's checkered past before buying, I'm feeling ok about it.

according to the sticker that is still on my last unopened bundle from abr , they do indeed make odds.?.?
i bought 3 lbs from them for like $14 a pound i think, about a year ago. maybe a little longer.
i am not exagerating when i say that i have not had a single bad experience yet. stuff melts like butter, no stones or very, very few in a rod here and there and the colors are all over the place depending on the flame i use.
i just made a retti marble and it really worked nice. all kinds of blues and greens in it.
My experience with the Generations seconds is pretty much like Chubbles. The ones I got were full size sticks but absolutely loaded with seeds/stones/whatever. The only way I've been able to put a rod in the flame without it exploding, is to preheat it in the kiln first, and even that is iffy. It does turn an awesome and unique green if used thin on the surface, but when used thick or encased for something like a stick stack, it stays almost black. I do hope they continue to work on this one, because when it comes out right that bright green color is da boom!
I bought 5 pounds from Kris this time around. I was able to pick out about a pound that were exceptional quality(almost first quality)
The rest is ok, has alot of stones but can be worked around. I use alot of the green for surface raked prodo and it looks amazing.
Preheating the rods in the kiln is a good idea as the rods do like to pop off.
The bluish rods should turn green after heating.
Striking with a cold flame can bring out semi-opaque lime green and sky blue shades, but excessive kiln time/temp can undo this. It's tough to get it just right.
Try backing with white for a really nice emerald shade.
All in all, a good color.

when you say you picked a good LB, was it from the 5lb you bought, or out of all that was at generations? how does one look for "good" rods of this? i jumped on this as soon as i saw the thread, having missed all the previous exp 5, but after i bought it i was thinking...... abe said somewhere that all the good exp 5 but a tiny bit at the beginning came from precision, everything since attempted by NS has not worked.
So far my experience with this color, is that it is cobalt, except it likes to fall off in 1/2 inch pieces, has a huge amount of seeds and air bubbles, and it changes colors less than cobalt. the rods i've used dont even reduce to grey or red like cobalt, they just stay blue. except the stones. if they boil, they turn an ugly yellow grey.

maybe i just need to go through this and find the good stuff, but it looks mostly consistent to me. i think this was the worst glass purchase i've ever made.
lol dont get down man. Yes the pound of good rods I picked out from the 5 lb bundle I bought. Just look for smooth rods with minimal chunks etc.
To get the green make your piece then throw in the kiln for a couple hours at 1050. Brings out the greenz every time.

okay the above result was the first day i used it. i pulled some stringers, a gather, and coiled abubble, and no matter how thin i pufffed it, or what flame i used, i couldnt get it to change at all. i made 1 eye with it, that while working stayed blue the entire time, and used the eye and left the rod in the kiln when i was done. when i got there today, the eye was a very dark and even emerald green, and the rod was basically black, with the tiny tip visible dark green.
this color is way different than any other striker i've used before.
Work Real Hot=> Cobalt Blue
Less Hot=> Trans. Green
Even Less Hot=> Opaque Blue
Even Lesser=> Opaque White
Then Anneal At 1200 (f) 30 Min.
Done...lime Green
it doesnt seem like this much at all... white? but we'll see. it seems like thin work, esp over white or other bright colors will get the best shades. still, it seems like a cross between cobalt and like paris green 6. is this green safe for extended high kiln cycles? if so, that would make it better than regular greens.

I dont recall when or where i got my stash of odds, but i agree , like butter.
might have been a old post of Abe's but he talked of coming out with EXP Green in tube. such a nice green , be a nice color to have available on a constant at least in rod form

butter baby, butter. and the sweetest color changes!
I ordered 2 lbs and all rods were seady except for 3-4

okay i've worked a bunch more now, and i just got really unlucky with the first rod i used. i just grabbed the ends that broke off in shipping, and tried them the first day, and they sucked, so i noticed it was mostly similar and was not too stoked. today however, i opened up the bundles and its pretty mixed. there are rods ranging from cobalt 5-6, and then black(blue), black(green) and black (teal) rods. almost all have at least some seeds.
after coiling and blowing this in, i got some very interesting effects. mostly, its similar to dark multi, but darker in the shade of green and some reddish stuff(i added gold and silver, and layered with criptonium). it seems like a self striking green, like aruby thats clear when worked then red, this is cobalt when worked, and cools to green without needing striking. areas around welds, marias etc that get different or more heat, get a silver haze, that seems on the surface, although i had a tube crack and when i looked inside, the entire inside surface was a nice baby blue, and the color was about 2mm thick, light blue all the way through. after i melted the tube and pulled it down thinner and more sta ble, i havent got the light blue to come back yet, but i just made 2 big blowins at the end of the day, so tomorrow i'll see what i can get out of them.

so if we have the odds and now there are only seconds, who has the first quality rods? never heard of a first? oh to be Abe for a day with the combo to the vault. :)
I have some first but they are not for sale also all the seconds I have got from Gen blue green or seedy all have been money green coming out the kiln.
I did have a little prob at first but just like dom after a strike period at 1050 its done!
Is it still available I use it all the time if you have some and don't want it I will scoop it up.
Peace

Northstar has let me know that NS-127 (Exp Green 5) has been put on an indefinite hold.
I do still have some of these seconds available.
jr23, funny you should use the term "money green"...That is the name all of my local customers call it.

Isn't NS Unexplainium really Experimental Green #5 from Draconis? Cuz i have about 20 lbs of it laying around and I thought they both were from Draconis's formula

Unexplainium was one of my colors and it had some of the same ideas as Exp#5 in it. I was the one that made over 95% of all the Exp ever produced. Draconis only made 100 lbs of this color and then I made it from that point on, it was when we came to NS that the formula did not want to work the same way. One of the chemicals used has been tainted by Chinese manufacturing processes and the company we bought it from ha went out of business but we are working on it all the time but when we hit a wall we just put it on the back burner for awhile and then come back to it in due time to try it again.
