i've been dropping in here for a while now and i tought i should take a minute to introduce myself and show some of my work.

i'd like to start by thanking everyone for openly sharing so much information.

my name is jeff berning(berningglass). 8 months ago i traded my tobbacco addiction for a glass addiction. in that short time i've gone from having an expensive hobby, to having a hobby that pays for itself, to having a struggling business. i make oil candles, flower vases, sun cathers , pump dispeners, seasonal ornaments ,jewelry and such. i also make pipes, but only for myself ,family and friends.

thanks. ya, all of this stuff was done on a national 3a, with some type off 12 hole tip, and a regalia oxy/con. concentrators limit your torch size. unless you're willing to get several of them, and link 'em together, and run 'em through a compressor into a holding tank. my studio is 84 sq. feet. so that's not gonna happen for me. i live in the middle of no where, which is great, unless you need things like oxygen. getting oxygen would be a 2 and a half hour round trip, and i'm not willing to do that. i just found out that GTT came out with the scorpion . looks like my concentrator would run it. i'm calling them in the morning. i might buy one tommorrow...........or maybe i'm just all hopped up on borosilicate.....

Don't feel bad, my shop is extremely tiny too. I've been checking out the Scorpion and the lil' Cricket too. My concentrator won't run the Scorpion completely but it will run it's enter fire or the Cricket! We have oxygen here, but it's super expensive and there's no option to get liquid... plus I'm really intrigued by concentrators.

Hey, if you get any good info about that Scorpion feel free to pass it on to me... or better yet, if you buy one feel free to slip us a lil' review :D

the cobalt blue and white one ia a wrap and rack. with really fat lines on the wrap. i have a set of metal calipers that i make to make sure they are the right diamater. i usually. start with a rod that is slightly smaller that what i want to end up with. these are 13mm, i started with a 12 mm rod. the first time i made some i spent a morning making the same shape horn over and over again out of clear until i could consistantly get the same shape. now it's a piece a cake.

yo berning i got the set. and dam thanks. how did you get those colors in the pipe?
did you do a blowout blowin? i really love the texture and colors.
(i will post pics in a lil) but i really like the style you went with. so your def gonna see that type of mouth piece..and for only 11months not making pipes all day dam.

aaannnd you wrote a note. thats whats up i meant to throw some handwriting in there cause i i feel everyone forgot about the pen and pad.

and thats a nice as suculpty(sp) scene

how did you get those colors in the pipe?
did you do a blowout blowin? i really love the texture and colors.

i'm still confused on the difference between blow in/blow out. it was one of the 2 i think. i guess that's the downside of being a lonely lampworker in the middle of nowhere. but this is what i did.

cover some 12mm tubing in blue moon
blow up into bubble
cover in clear dots
condense down to 16mm tube
put it inside a point made from 25 x 4 tubing
inflate,recondense,seperate into 2 pieces
bigger one for the can, smaller one for the mouth piece
the center piece is just a point ,fumed with silver, cover with clear dots.

NUBBLET
03-15-2010, 01:29 PM
blow IN = blow bubble INTO tube
blow OUT= blow bubble OUT of blob

i've been playin with the water theme alot lately. as far them selling like hot cakes , this is my first fish scene. not that many people have even seen it yet. i'm gonna make a few more this week . i'm also gonna make some random single fish, an octopus , maybe some jelly fish and other assorted sea life. then put them all inside of a glass display case ,so it looks like a fish tank, but without water.

Cool! What color green are the dots on the turtle?
What's the trick with the oil lamps? Make sure the wick fits tight in the glass?

the green is the glasstronics green

with the oil lamp inserts i use this tool i made out of 2 screw extractors mounted into either end of a small piece of wooden dowel. i have three different size wicks that i use for different types of oil candles. these are 3/16 inch wicks. i know approximatley , on the larger screw extractor, where 3/16 of an inch is. i open the hole to approximately 3/16 of an inch , and then using an 11/64 inch drill bit ,as a gauge , i either open of close the hole to 11/64 of an inch. making the hole barely smaller than the wick , giving it a nice snug fit.

allright , back from a party in sac. sold several pieces including the last one i posted. i asked 60 she paid 60 and we both left happy. i sometimes forget that i'm slow and have a little torch. it took me a little over 2 hours to make and in that time i could have made 5 or 6 oil candles at 25 each , or 10 jellyfish at 20 each. i'm still gonna make pipes because i like to (and people always ask for them). but as far as marketing myself, little old ladies looking for pretty little shinies.
60 isn't bad , i just always want more
thanks for your pricing advice.

i like to have a wide price range when i'm out vending ,it's been a struggle to find inexpensive things i can make. these were my wifes idea and i resisted at first, i thought it was lame. until i made a bunch and then sold them.

glass straws- 10 inch section of 9.5 tubing ,flame polished on both ends and a little color for decoration. 6 dollars a piece or 4 for 20. i was really bummed out i didn't make more ,seein that i sold em all, and they were so easy quick and cheap to make.

OK so a spun out of his mind tweeker came up to me while i was vending and asked if it was possible to melt my straws with mapp gas. i told him sure, so he bought 12 ,10 inch sections of 9.5 tubing for 60 dollars. he's coming back tommorow to buy a couple dozen more, but he doesn't want the color squiggles or dots, just plain tubing. he also wants some straws made out of 12 mm. i have a friend interested in glass and he scored and snapped all the tubing and right now he's flame polishing the ends............i don't want him to cut himself on my straws while he's making meth pipes.

berning

i started puttin the turtles on stands made out of 9.5 tubing, the right size to accept the standard air tube for fish tank pumps. the turtle blows bubbles.

i also started putting eyeballs one the front of the grubrollers. they're not little steamrollers anymore, but i think they'll sell anyways.

thanks steak .i made a few more and each one looks less and less like a lizard and more like a lil dinosaur. i decided to stop , step back and i'll tackle that project later.

i've been tryin to figure out what a berning glass bubbler looks like .i finally pulled one out of the kiln that i feel happy with and want to reproduce.

thank you.
after lookin at it for a while decided i wasn't totally happy with the reversal in the bowl, i thought it would look better if i just put a spiraled section there instead. and when holding it , it felt more natural to have the carb in the front. and the neck could be longer.
so here's the next few. i like 'em now ,but probably won't by the next time i post.

Dude, you know this guy (http://www.popweb.com/costantini/)?

Old school and a contemporary master.

Done, redone and overdone; sure I could see where that is true. But why? Two reasons:

one, the stuff sells. and this is good.

two, they are not easy to make. they have been and continue to be great test of lampworking skill. And by have been I mean like 600 years.

There are a hole 'school' of objects in class with the fish (pun intended). Think about learning them all. That's becoming boss old school style. And it's a good business.

Wess Flemming, 'beastmaster' here, has been thinking about that same path for a wile now.

Okay, I'm done. Thanks for sharing the work. I enjoy it.

thanks , and yup , it's an implosion milli. the same concept as a sig milli , except it's done with a stickstack ( no clear core ). honey combs also work well .

with a good implosion on both ends , a small ball of color can yield a fair amount of milli. a 12 line stick stack , 2 inches long , can make 3 milli cane , that are between 30 and 40 grams.

if there's ever someone around when i make them , i'll try to get some pics and post up a tut.
