Hi guys, my name is Joy I'm a college student at Drexel University in Philadelphia. I've always wanted to work with glass, but I lived in the middle of nowhere in PA where there was no place to learn. Thankful I'm in Philly now and I'm enrolled in a beginner class at Philadelphia Glass Works that will hopefully start soon! I'm really interested in eventually making glass pipes, but sadly I can't find a teacher. If anyone could give me advice on that I would be so thankful. I plan on learning the basic skills and working my way up to pipes. Any advice on books, classes, ...etc would be greatly appreciated.

just do a search, or read lots of threads, that question has been answered a zillion times...

This place is an awesome one to learn from. Welcome! Seriously tho, if you want to learn just start reading threads... then if you can't figure something out ask a specific question *after searching* and usually someone will be happy to answer

I'm reading the threads but what I'm really looking for is advice on progression like what skills I should work on first to get to my end goal of making pipes.

Philly glass works has all the answers you need to glass art/ Pipemaking you would ever want. Nathan Purcell, and Joshua Opendecker are staff at the shop. I think they made pipes in the past but still retain some knowledge of the industry. Philly has the inside track, you dig?

I think the easiest way to learn would be to just do the real basics first then when you feel confident, try and make a pipe. Ive learned everything from this site and the people here.

Then once you've done that you can post pictures here of what you made and people will give you great advice on what you can do to improve your technique or troubleshoot any questions you may have.

Welcome to the fourm and have fun.

SHIT if you can get in with J.A.G. and J.O.P then you are in a hella better place than alot of us lol,

Those two guys define Glass art IMO, they take it to a whole new level beyond your traditional smoking apparati

look for this vhs video its called "How to blow your own glass handpipes" by Ed Hudson. you might be able to find it as a download online.... it will show you the super basics to setting up shop and making simple wrap and rake spoon pipes. Its gotta be from the 80's i think maybe early 90's. It was the very first video i ever saw and was pretty informative and well taped...
