He made an awesome mushroom marble ($130). Not quite sure why it's so much but maybe it took him 3 days to get it round. Here a quote from him.... "I do not sell marbles that are not up to my standards as an artist. Almost 1 and 3/4 inch marble with deep vortex, this piece has been crackled, (cracked on purpose and then healed, turning the cracks into interesting flat bubbles that refract the light) and is very strong. Very colorful, varies with light. This vortex appears to be about twice as deep as the diameter of the marble. (Optical illusions are hard to capture in pictures...) All of my marbles are 100 percent original, almost perfectly round, and without any surface flaws, so please, browse the rest, and tell your friends! Feel free to contact me. Thanks, Vaughn"
Hmmm.....cracked on purpose right in the middle of the vortex....yeah...ok
I wonder how he made that mushroom marble....???:puzzled:

I'm amazed at how many beads from my "wonky bowl" end up as cherished posessions of my daughters friends. It's the least I can do to spread the love of glass but I hate that shit being out there with my name associated. They can't have anything cracked though. That's just plain scrap.

his standards must be much different then mine.
ok I get it , I cracked it, I am going to try to pretend I did it on purpose.. fuck every famous artist feeds the same kind of bullshit. BUT the part of the crack being healed is incorrect that bitch is still cracked! If it was healed those scars would be a ROUND bubble.
His camera must be hella awesome cause thats about as flat of a vortex as I've seen. Not even quite sure how you get a vortex that flat and still call it a vortex.

Wow! I think he needs to put a crack on the other side of the vortex to even it out, and when he does he should show us the correct way to crack a marble on purpose!
:wtf1: How do you charge $130 for that marble?

Y'know...I'm wondering if it's some kinda inside joke or something. If you look at his other marbles, with the exception of the "Phat Mushroom" one, they're all under $30 or so - even has a $7 mib up for sale.

who cares!! if he sells something like that, thats his problem/ bad karma.
I wouldn't put my name on anything like that though. I don't even let cracked stuff leave the shop. Oh yeah I put some cracked marbles in our fish tank. The fish don't seem to even notice the cracks, so everybody wins!!
crackled with an L is a soft glass technique which looks nothing like that
that marble is checked to hell. prob not even annealed.

Fuckin awesome!!!! I pulled a vortex outta the kiln last night, fire/ice striped pattern in it. The borostix white checked, thought it was yet another addition to my flaw gallery. Now I know I can sell it and say oooooh look at the pretty crackles. I did that purposely to emphasize the ice theme ! I think I've got some flat tires layin around too that might be worth $1000. Wonder if this guys buyin?

you sort of can, and in boro it works best on thicker rod (although it works on 10mm too). Get a piece of cold rod, flash it through a pretty hot flame (i know, i know, all flames are hot, but you know what I mean) and put it aside. If you didn't warm the inside too much (hence the thicker the rod the easier to do), within a short time you will get a network of surface checks (similar to the crackling on soda glass). Re-introduce into a cooler flame slowly (or pre-heat in the kiln) to avoid the surface spitting off and gently melt it in. You will get an effect something akin to a spiderweb as the tears in the surface of the glass heal. I use Duran and TGI and it works for both, not sure about brands like Simax etc.
As for the guy on etsy, no one who knows anything about glass is going to believe his crap about it being on purpose. I think he's taking the piss ... and if he's not, he's a complete drongo.

Even I know better, sheesh.
I did sell a piece that had checked glow in the center once. This was one of those rare occasions that visually it kind of worked, and the glass around it was sound. But that guy? Those are just bad cracks.
I do like the backing on it though, it's a shame it cracked.
I could have sworn I saw one of the videos of Marcel doing a furnace type boro demo and he did the quick dip in the water crackle tech. I could be wrong though...so many videos, so little brain space.
