ok so i saw this youtube vid where this dude incased a cell phone in some tubing...i know most of you have proly seen it.. but i was curious to know if its possible to incase some sort of plant matter...you know for one of those joke wall hangers that say "break glass in case of emergency" lol thought id be a funny b-day gift or just something for laughs..
sooo do you guys think its possible without burning up the matter in side the tube when closing it up?

Yep, I've seen the youtube video... Notice he stopped filming after trying to garage?
Now, I don't think you could straight up encase it, but if you wanted to seal plant mantter inside a tube you could take a longer piece of tube, seal one end then punty up, take and start to close the other end while leaving enough room to cram said material down it after it's bench cooled for like 15 min or so, then take and seal the opened end the rest of the way quickly. The tube would have to be long enough that the heat from sealing it wouldn't travel down the tube and roast your goods. If you were quick about it you could probably pull a simple pendant loop to hang it by, but you don't want to mess around too long or your piece will end up cracking from the internal build up of pressure from heating a fully sealed piece. And don't bother annealing, this is a bench cooling process if I've ever heard of one.
I'd test it out a couple of times on something less valuable - or maybe a previously vaporized bunch equivalent to your emergency supplies.
Good luck, if you make it work let us know!

You can seal up plant matter. I have seen it done in hollow loopy ear plugs and a bracelet.

make hollow vessel, leave hole big enough for matter, insert matter, fill with epoxy.

Ummm.... you talkin fill entire thing with something like what they put on bar tops? That would make the plant matter unusable, and I don't think that's what he's going for. :puzzled:
What are you going for hippi? Stuff that's usable down the road or doesn't matter? If it doesn't matter, just get yourself a mold, put plant matter in then pour bar topper over it, that's how they make those weird encased bugs. To the general ignorant masses it looks like it was encased in glass.

disclaimer: breaker beware...i personally wouldnt want to break it to use it... i think the reactions of peoples face that see it hanging on the wall would be more then worth it lol... i think it would be cool to seal up a bunch of different things... beer drinkers get there beer, cig smokers get there cig...ect what other things would be fun to seal up for this kinda thing...a friends car keys? haha

Thats pretty funny, I have never heard of epoxy referred to as "bar topper"
I used to do this a lot with seeds, The trick is to use a tube like someone already suggested and make the tube long enough to keep the flame from burning your matter. You could also somehow cool the area you want to keep cool with something, ice, argon, ????

by the way use 12 mill thin wall tubing, it will seal up quick without exposing the glass to too much heat, also the shortest piece of tubing I ever did this sucessfully with was about a n inch. good luck

/\/\ Funny? Dude, before you mock someone take the .5 seconds to do some research.:tongue2: You had me doubting myself, but a quick google search of - bar topper - came up with a ton of results. Woodworkers call epoxy resin "bar topper" when they're using it to top bars - which is the probably the most common use we have for it. I'm betting everyone in the forum here has seen a bar...

I'm intimately familiar with bar topper from the amount of times my forehead has rested on a surfaced covered with it.

K, my bad. It's early, I'm a little hung over, and it's easy to misinterpret what someone's saying - especially on the internet when you can't see facial expressions.
I took a liquid filled pipe and filled it with poppy seeds instead of water. It looked cool.
Wow! Got any pics? Gonna have to try that sometime!

Bar Topper= a resin mixture poured onto the bar top to create a thick clear coat top. Items such as coins or signed dollar bills are laid out on the bar to before pouring sometimes to be encased.

Anyone know jt? He was working at studio broadway and devirginized someones headie fresh outta the kiln. I wasn't at the studio yet but they retaliated by putting all of his tools in points. A little off subject but still hilarious!

i have encased many things in glass.
hemp seeds, mustard seeds, bumble bees, and i was at a gathering one time that they had a fire walk and made several encased pieces of the fire coals as momentos of the walk

I have encased strontium aluminate powder in 4 mil tubing... as said before, trick is just to leave enough room to get the seal but not get the powder too hot or it burns out. Makes really great keyring things or necklaces if you use heavy wall capillary tubing, but it's a little harder to keep from heating everything up too much. Definitely possible to put pendant loops on, too.
