I am new to this site for the 2nd time. Made an account last year when I first got into functional glass and glass art as a whole rather than just glass pipes, and never really checked back here. I ordered a GTT Scorpion in the middle of August and since its the newest model, and I will be getting one from the first batch, I still have not received it. They assure me that they are near completion, and I am expecting an email any day saying its on its way. For now, I just have to wait. But while I wait, I want to learn as much as I can, and get any advise on the construction of my studio, what tools to get, where to order glass, and really anything that you can offer a newbie. I have not had any lessons, and would prefer not to take any, but again this is my opinion before I've tried it. I thank you all for all the help Im sure you will be.

i dunno so much more can be learned from watching... if you dont want to take a lesson maybe you might search around for someone local you can watch... there is so many subtle things that happen.... maybe check out some youtube videos... books are great... advanced lampworkers volume one by milion townsend is a great book to look into...

Welcome Chronic!

You can learn a TON if you just take the time to pour thru the back posts of this forum. Some of the best of us have been posting on here since they were fairly new - their discoveries and failures - so if you devote yourself to it you can pick up a lot.

As for what you need - trust me, it's been answered before. If you look on the main page there's a Techniques, Tips & Tricks forum section, with a subsection Setting Up Shop. The questions about the basics have been answered again and again - take the time to read. Then, if you have questions on where to get tools, or what would work best in your situation feel free to ask (do a search first - the search feature is at the top of the main page).

You've got to know what you're goals are - do you want to make marbles, pipes, headie pipes, pendants, beads, sculpture, ect... Because the tools you'll need for certain projects are often unnecessary for others.

Good Luck, read lots!

Thanks for all the kind words. Sounds like I will be browsing around a lot in the tips n tricks sections. As for my goals, Sculpting and function are my two main priorities. Don't get me wrong, I love colorwork and clean lines, but Salt's sculpting style and SG's functionality just blow me away. I aspirer to reach a level close to them someday.

Thanks again!
