I know that glassblowing is less popular around the world than it is in Parts of Italy, Germany, and the USA. However, I'm planning on moving out to Russia. I've been in Eastern Europe and couldn't find much of a studio in Hungary to practice my skills but now I'm headed out to St.Petersburg for 2 years and I hope to kick a studio together or benefit from someone else's labour. Does anyone know anything about Lampworking in Russia or St.Pete?

I just shipped 5 lbs to someone in Russia so at least there is one over there somewhere, but since they have 8 time zones it might be a long ways away..

I am a huge fan of Peter the Great. He and Isaac Newton used to get really drunk and wrestle in the garden of his borrowed house in London, then shoot the paintings and smash the doors. Enjoy your time in his wonderful city.

I really miss the stories Ace used to share.

They were so abstract but seemed tangible, somehow.

There is a lot of lampworked soft glass figurines coming out of St Petersburg. We carry a line of them at Disney. I don't think you'll find much boro work though.

I can import the boro rods and such from the US but I need to find a place to work and rent oxy and propane tanks. I was hoping to meed someone here who could show me where everything is. I'm still working on my Russian which is really limiting my chances doing this on my own.

I don't know if this helps but...

When I was in India I went to the biggest technical university I could find and asked around until I found the resident sci guy. I'd say that's your best shot at finding another lamper. Plus, the university's tend to have a lot of English speakers.

That's a really good idea. I've already been to a highschool (possibly lost in translation) where they do this sort of thing but they didn't have a place for me to setup. If anyone knows of anything about Russian glass it would be much appreciated!!

i don't know much about russian glass. but about three yrs ago i fixed a soft glass figurine for a friend of a friend. she brought me the piece in the original box and there still a sticker on the bottom of the piece. all i remember is that it was made in russia, for some reason st petersberg rings a bell. it was this large abstract butterfly which had been mounted or glued to some sort of metal fitting with a clamp. it looked like an oversized broach.
anyway, one of the wings had come off, i fixed it and everyone was pleased. she even gave me $40 for my trouble.
