double thick myth?

whut is up with this term? is it real at all or just a selling ploy?
i have thought perhaps it is a tech that involves the layering of tube on top of tube- color in the middle?
but any attempts i have tried left big ol air bubbles though out section....
i was wundering cause this term came up the other day and people did not seem to receptive to it....

to know what double thick is, you have to know what single thick is, and then double it. If someone asks if your shit is double thick, without explaining what single thick is, then your piece would be tripple thick. If however by default they ask what thickness your piece then you should allways answer quadruple thick, so they are more interested. If you see some glass similiar quality to yours, all ways talk smack and say but that shit is only single thick. So in conclusion, if their glass is single thick and yours is quadruple thick, that is a difference of tripple, times your piece by three, and both sides of the equal sign should be equal. If not, go back and check your math!!

I believe the technique you're describing is known as 'tube encasement' and (as the cobra and phases group says) "people do it all the times" ... you just need to start melting at one end and slowly go to the other side without trapping any air. \
However, it won't make your piece double thick just because you're adding extra glass. It will just make it larger in mass. How thick you make it is your decision, just like how you can make the same thickness of piece from a big piece of standard wall as from a piece of heavywall.
As far as using the term as part of a car salesman ploy, I think broken glass has the right procedure.

HA ,HA... double think is a broad term usually used by salesman-non-blowers... to my knowledge there is standard ,medium , heavy and xtra-heavy walled tubing this is a general breakdown . you always add another layer of glass for artwork either inside or surface work... the rule of thumb and my knowledge from experience is. even wall thickness is most important, then annealing properly... even thickness glass is much stronger structurally than thick ass glass . i have seen thinner EVEN walled pieces bounce off pavement w/ no damage. and thicker pieces thud and get chipped , etc. they were both 3 pieced shirlocks at a festival. i.m.o. i prefer to use standard wall tube and condence piece a little while doing art work.this thinner , even walled pieces tend to "give " a little more when stressed ( dropped, knocked ,etc...alowing them to bend or absorb the stress and not break. the thicker the glass the less able for glass to not be able to "give" or absorb stress and cause stress to break. each time stress is introduces into glass it never leaves the molecular composition of the glass eventually making it weaker over time... the only way to fix this is re-anneal the piece at proper temp, for each mm of thickness... so as for double or triple thickness or blown , its a kine to help sell . try to explain the even factor v. thickness to buyer. and i'd call my shit" tripple phat" for the style ... good luck Drue

double thick is one of the stupidest terms I have heard. It is fun to laugh about though. There is no such thing. Although considering how quickly people have been coining terms based on slight variations of techniques, there is a slim chance that I am wrong. But even if I am I still think its silly.

As for "double dipped" blotter..I think that has to do with the amount of mic's per hit. 250 mic's will make you see crazy visuals but 500 will make you totally tripindicular. "Double dipped" from what I gather was a way to tell ya be carefull this shit will rock you hard.
Maybe one of the old timers that really ate some orange sunshine back in the day will chime in.

now, its not the admin of the site, they want harmony, so don't blame them, they are stuck in the middle, and they VERY politlely asked me, and I had no problem complying, I just have beef with the person(s) who wouldn't approch me... thats what pissed me off... The staff here is nice, helpful and coutrious..

Now onto my site, I paid $600 for a dedicated server, with unlimited bandwidth for a year, I had it for 2 months , it disapareaed, the contact number I had was disconected, and no one is at the address I was given. I was making $0 off the site, so I am hoping someone will host me, or a benifactor will pay for a server from a reputable company, or I just hit the lotto, and I do it again. I have some plans for another fugly.com type site (just alot more BALLS OUT) and I want to build another comunity... some blog things, but we will see what the future holds

The thing about double dipped is, paper is pourus, and you dip it the mics go into the paper, if you dip it wet again , it forces whats in it out, if its dry you wash part out, blus I wuld assume (no postive) someone making blotter is trying to rush through the process, so its like dip,next, dip, next, dip, next...... quick quick quick... Its been long enough ago at this point that i will admit to having some fairly extensive knowledge on the subject of vitamin L.
The Number of micrograms of lsd in a hit of blotter is not the main determining factor in its halucinogenic proerties. One of the steps in producing L is a cleansing process that removes the impurities in the finished product. If the impurities have been seperated from the L twice; you get what is referred to as "double sep" also referred to in some circles as "dirty double" Its the stuff that rots your gut and gives you massive stomach cramping and the shits etc.... This stuff happens to produce some of the most intense halucinations you could ever hope to see. Examples of this would be the gunpowder, amber and silver crystal.
The 3rd seperation would lead to "triple sep" which is nice and clean. Hence no cramping or discomfort. More of a mind high kind of a "thinking man's dose" but you don't get the visuals as intensely. Example would be the white fluff and rock salt crys.
The quad sep is even yet more of a mind high without many halucinations whatsoever but if you get them.... oh boy do you ever LOL, Examples would be the needlepoint, tornado juice and chechoslovakian crystal.
The fifth seperation is referred to as pure lsd and often offered but rarely delivered. One time at a rainbow gathering about 15 yrs ago i did manage to get my hands on one barrel of real orange sunshine and it was a close to religious experience. It was free and it was a very interesting way to spend a 4th of July.

And dwaine is pretty much right on the money about double dipping.... to increase the number of mics in a hit you decrease the amount of alcohol you mix your product with and you just put it on less paper;) only dipped once and you ALWAYS take your time. It only takes about 3 hrs as it is to do it right ;)

I've heard this way to many times as well. I figured it evolved/digressed from having to blow out an I/O piece and condense it repeatedly to get all the pattern worked in. If they ask me, it's blown as many times as it takes to get in their sales case.

about 6 months ago i stood in a shop with my first really saleable i/o spoons. they only had color in the bowl end and fume down the stem. (no ground breaking art here yet) i was still focusing on getting my bowls/mouthpieces/carbs not to look all jinked up. all said and done they were pretty ok, all the i/o was worked all the way in and i was pretty happy with how they came out. just for the record I HATE TO SELL MY GLASS. only because every time i walk into a shop (even shops that consistently buy from me) i look around at all the high end glass and feel pretty intimidated. on this particular day i was in a shop that i had never been in before, and almost left before even opening my case. the shop manager was a "know it all" asshole and was "teaching" his girlfriend everything there was to know about glass pipes. when i opened my case he said "oh wow i love double thick glass" then he went on to explain to his girlfriend that because you could see a layer of clear glass between the surface of the piece and the art / fume on the inside that meant it was double thick. then to my astonishment went on to explain to her exactly HOW i did that. he told her that i took one tube of clear and put the color / fume on the surface and then placed that tube inside another tube and melted it all together, and that was "double thick inside out" through all of this i said nothing and struggled to keep a straight face, the moral to the story is this...

i let him think what he wanted and also let his girlfriend think he was a glass god. the end result of that was i left with empty cases and could afford to buy another case of glass to practice some more.

I've seen a Double ISO encasement, a Reversal ontop of another reversal, two different color schemes as to see the detail and yes leave a little space or build into a clear piece.
