Rotation you sillly people Rotation

I just started working at a production studio and i was informed that i was not holding the glass right .... I go One hand over one hand under .... I was told you have more contorl with both hands over ..... I also rotate both ways both twards and away ..... I was told i need to learn to rotate only tward myself .....
so for two weeks i have been trying it this way .... two hands both over hand and rotating tward my self It is hard becouse i have done the other way for five years

anyway do you go one way or two
and how do you hold your point over under double over or are there any crazy double under people
I think this would make a good poll thanks

That's odd. I go both over, but I have seen plenty of skilled lampers go one over one under. As far as one direction rotation, that is fine for most things, but I find it a little easier to keep line work straight when I employ a reverse rotation every now and again.

I have my left hand under and right hand over (i'm right hand dominant). I rotate both ways. I have more control with both hands over but then i've gotta maneuver my hands around to get the blow tube to my mouth

All i gotta say is everyone does it their own way. If youve done it your way for FIVE years.....id say thats how you do it. who cares what anyone else says.

I roll both ways and rock it when I wanna soak in some heat (cool I saw the ground joint machine do that on the other thread)... overhand mostly but if my hands/wrists are hurting, I can rock it underhanded for most of the time, it def helps =)

The poll is a little confusing, as it asks two questions and you can only give one answer.

I'm right handed, bothe hands over handed grip.

Spin top towards me if I want the tube to get bigger, top away from me if I want the tube to collapse or condense in.

glass if versatile, if you are limiting yourself by only holding it one way then you are missing out on all the fun shit like holding stuff with your mouth and both hands, while plugging a hole with something else :devilish:, while blowing.

And you should be able to go over/over, over/under, under/under/ and one handed because you're gonna have to at some point. also as long as you keep it rotating and in the flame shouldn't matter which way you turn it.

I use both over when I'm doing some things, and one over one under when I'm doing other things. I rotate in both directions. I don't think blowing glass is a one size fits all thing. I have more strength with both hands over and use that to do heavier tasks, but for fine work there's a lot to be said for one up one down. If you only spin in one direction, I think you'll get a built in rotation, but then, what the heck do I know. I apparently do it as wrong as you do.

The traditionally correct way is one hand over, one hand under. Spinning both ways is also traditionally correct because gravity tends to cause the center of a bubble to lag behind causing twist if you only go one way.

But there really is no right or wrong. If a method works for you, go with it. Never let anyone tell you that there is only one way to do something. Just making that statement is an indication of experience that is narrow and limited.

It all depends on what I'm doing. If I'm melting in color on a pipe, overhand grip, rotating both ways. If I'm making a wine glass, one hand under and one over and rotate both ways. It's easier to get the blowtube to your mouth and keep everything straight when your blowtube hand palm is up.

i was over both- (lefty handed)- after i read this i started to be more conscious and doin over/under, which i found i liked- feels groovin...but for splittin tubes i did tend to go over over....diffrent strokes for diffrent folks....

I am right handed and "usually" am both hands over, I like to rotate towards me but do rotate away from me to keep patterning straight. One other thing that should have been addressed is what hand is easiest to use the blow tube in, for me I am right handed and this is the hand I need the blow tube to be in for me to puff.

Oh, had you ever posted a poll you might of had a clue that polls can be multiple selections, which since this poll allowed me to check two options............

Mickelson nailed it. For another tip about rotation, generally when your tryin to keep your glass even an nice it's more important to rotate steady than anything. I've seen some folks rotate an they look like they are making some jackson pollack art an can't understand why it's all uneven walls an oddly shaped, slow it down son, gravity aint thata quick. Treat it like a woman, not a pornstar :)

thanks for all the replys
what is goin on is im tryen to get a dead spot out of my seals its like oneside thick one side thin so i'm tryen to correct the process and was told it was my rotation and hand position
there are likely uses for all of the above
i'm not tryen to say one is right just find out what is common and who does what
you can pick more than one choice in the poll
thanks again love

i almost always am over over and spinning one way. lots of production. but on nicer things, you have to be willing to switch it up, i just do that cuz it's efficient and how i learned. definitely makes for sore wrists though.
