View Full Version : Glass in injury
I got a nasty cut/stab on my middle finger yesterday and I think some small amount of glass got broken off inside the wound. I tried to feel ans search but could not find anything. This morning it stings when pressure is applied. If there is glass stuck should I let my body do it's thing? It's a small amount of clear if anything.
Although it's a small cut it blead alot and fast. There's blood everywhere on my shop floor, bench and kiln (I finished my work real quick)

i would try very hard to get it out if it can be done.
no telling what kind of infection may arise from it.
true story: my moms best friend got a rose thorn in her pinky and decided to let it work its way out on its own because it hurt too much to dig at it and she didnt want to go to dr. for a simple splinter/thorn.
big mistake as her pinky swelled up so big it split open. got a superinfection and had to be cut off.
that is right, she is now missing her pinky because she left a rose thorn in her finger thinking her body would do it own thing.
not saying this will or could happen with a glass splinter but i wouldnt want to find out.
you must be a newbe.....get used to it!
^ I am one step above a newb! I have had multiple bad burns and cuts but never one where I thought I have glass inside.
If i do feel like it's of concern and do go to the doc will it show on an xray?

Glass isn't an organic substance, so your body won't push it out. It'll just form a scar capsule around the glass. GET THAT SHIT OUT!!!!

Nope, it won't show up on X-Ray.

Use an Exacto knife, A bunch of Isopropyl and proper after care, get some balls on and dig that fucker out, I had a piece in between my top two digits on my index finger, it plagued me for weeks, then I thought it was gone, NAY! it was just waiting to rupture the tissue around it, ended up with a HUGE blood blister that I had to dig through to get the glass out

those lil glass slivers are fun under the fingernail :)

Like said above, the body will form a little scar tissue around it, making it kinda like a little flax seed, and at that point if it's close enough to the surface it will be easier to pluck out. This means that if it's shallow enough it might be most effective to wait until it heals and forms a seed, then remove it.
In the mean time it's important to avoid pushing it deeper into the skin by using the finger, putting pressure on it. I've plucked out several scar-ified shards over the years, though I still have one in my index finger that I mistakenly pushed deeper; that was several years ago but I can still feel a little lump down in there.
Glass, especially clear, is hypo-allergenic, so it's probably the safest type of splinter that you can have in your skin infection-wise.

Glass slivers can be a bitch to find and only some are radiopaque (so that they show on x-ray). If you can't see or feel it - to easily remove it yourself - then you probably need to see a doc.
It's not too bad now. I soaked it in hydrogenperoxide and distiller water for some time to really clean it. Neosporine and a bandaid.
Since I think is small shards I'll leave it alone. I feel like I will cause more risk of infection if I start picking at it.
Thnx!

Known several people that have had glass fragments embedded from auto collisions. Yes the hospital will x-ray it, provided the "contrast" is set correctly the glass will show...................
Glass will work itself out of the body, I have witnessed pieces left in an accident victim work its way to the surface over time..................
Just my own personal observations ...............................
Alot of times I thought I have broken off glass in scars cuz it was swollen but everytime it was just the cut causing the swelling.
If you cant feel it then there is probably nothing there. You are just poking the cut which will hurt obviously.

Auto glass is different ... it's designed not to have sharp points. When you get a glass sliver, it has a sharp point that penetrates your skin. The sharp point will continue to work its way deeper into your skin over time if you don't have it removed.
Your doctor has some nice tools to locate and remove the glass ... and it hurts much less than the DIY method of using a pocket knife, pliers or whatever.

smash some tempered auto glass; check out the multitude of sharp little slivers. it was not designed to not cut you, just not produce any pieces large enough to kill you.

I was in a car wreck when I was young . Both my shoulder & side of my head had glass in it . At the hospital I was giving x-rays and stitched up . Healed fast but from time to time after I would get a places in the scar on my shoulder . Mother took me to the Dr..The Dr. opened it up & pulled out glass shard . Wondering how they could have missed that . The Dr told us that it would work itself out . And It has over the years . That is my experience with glass working itself to the skin surface . One more thought .... My son swallowed a glass stone from a old necklace. At the hospital they did an x-ray & showed us the x-ray in his stomach . what ever ... good luck to you

As someone who has on occasion retrieved glass from peoples faces for a living, I can tell you that some glass does and some glass does not show on xrays. Auto windshield glass almost always shows. Side windows sometimes yes, sometimes no. Broken bottle glass from a bar fight was particularly bright though I can't recall what kind of bottle it was...
I've never treated a lampwork injury other than my own stupid shit like working barefoot and picking up the stray shard in my foot. But I didn't take any xrays so who knows if boro would show. My guess would be no for clear but that the metal content in some colors would be enough to show. Maybe I'll take a rod or two in to work and do a test....

The emergency room doc let me keep all the glass chunks they took out of my head after I totaled my bug. Safety glass is definitely sharp when broken, I almost lost an ear!

Go to the health food store and get some Silica 30c in the homeopathic section. Take a few internally, then lick your fingers and roll a couple pellets over the wound. It will help it to work its way out. I have glass in my face from a car wreck many years ago that occasionally pops up, pieces in my chest from glass shrapnel while wearing a tiny tank top to blow glass in TX summer heat, and once had one of those glorious hair fine stringers in my knuckle. I would cut it open, the stringer would slide itself out just a bit, and when I touched it to pull it out, it would break. I would have to let it heal, get slightly infected, cut it open and let it try to get out again. Took several months. To hell with doctors...glassblowing is not for pussies.
