I would like to thank my fellow veterans and their families who have served and continue to serve in our armed forces. Although this holiday is about remembering those who have died for our country, I still see it as a time to thank those that are still living as well as pay tribute to those who have died for this great nation.

As much as I respect all of our service members past and present, there is a special place in my heart for “The Greatest Generation”… the WWII veterans and their families.

This was a time when every American came together and did their part. Men lied about their age to enter service earlier than they were allowed to, children collected scrap metal and gave up their metal toys for recycling, and women… at a time when women were traditionally “home makers”, went to work to support the war effort.

About 3 times per year I do glass demonstrations for The Disabled American Veterans. The man who coordinates it is a WWII veteran who still serves his country in The American Legion to help veterans. He told me about when he was a teenager he used to read the Pittsburgh newspapers daily about Adolf Hitler, and the outrage he felt about what was going on in the world. He was only 17, but enlisted as an 18 year old to fight for freedom. A German sniper shot off part of his nose, and after he was patched up he went back into battle instead of doing home.

Every time he comes in to my shop he goes to shake my hand, and instead of a hand shake, I stand at attention and salute him. It is an honor to be in his presence… he is a true hero in my book, as well as in the pages of history.

This weekend is more than just beer, burgers, and BBQ’s. If you know somebody who is serving, or has served our country, please take the time to say “Thank You” to these brave men and women.

Thanks for listening.

Tom Doner

P.S. - I find it very sad… disgraceful would be a more appropriate word… that every year a bogus “holiday” (4/20) receives more attention than Memorial Day or Veteran’s Day. I just had to say that.

very well said tom,

i have a grandfather(ww2), father (korea) and an uncle (viet nam) that all fought in wars for this great country. my uncle did two tours on the front line sweeping mines. he has throat and lung cancer that has been attributed to agent orange.
yes i say we owe those folks a salute and a hats off at the very least.

we would be in a world of hurt without the fine men and women serving our country.

thanks to all from days gone by as well as todays military sevice personal. seriously, thanks....

sidenote: i could not agree with you more on the 4/20 holiday part??? people young and old really need to get their priorities straight.

later, jay

gotta give thanks to the gramps, dropped out at 13 to get on a boat with a fake age, eventually enlisted in the Canadian army and also eventually fought on many many battle lines, pow 2 escaped 2 etc, etc. just like the many amazing people who put up their lives for us. if we lost the war quite possibly my grandfather would have never of had my father and so on....

sooooo much much thanks to all who have made it possible for me to sit behind a torch and make a ;iving off it, choose it and progress it!!!

was at the beach this week and on the way home spent some time at fort Stevens Oregon, gone as a kid so many times.... highly recommended.. its a decomisioned army base. you can walk anywhere and everywhere checking out cool stuff. it was the only soil on american grounds that was attacked, other than pearl harbor but thats out of our continent. a lot of people dont know that fact.
17 shots from the Japanese was fired all missed and hit the dirt trying to aim for the base.
so all in all i give up much respect and thanks to those who have came before me and weren't scared at all to die for their country knowing full well that it might happen. i know personally id never ever put myself in the same position.
thanks again Charles Burgess(my Gramps) and those of you who have gone and came and those that are of the families of the many!!!

Well said Tom.... Remember we have no BBQ's , 420 , or any holiday's if it were not for the people who risk their life's to protect and defend the USA.

Respect to all who have ever put on a uniform and stood up for all of US !!!
