So since I'm posting here I figured I should introduce myself.
Hi, I'm Wayne, owner of Rockstar Glassworks, smack dab in the middle of the Delmarva peninsula.
I'm 36, married to Phd in Af/Am studies, no kids (dog and cat are like kids right?)and work full time as a lampworker.
Like many, nearly 90% of my income is from the pipe business. I've built up an excellent client list and have a very loyal customer base. Although I'm not the most insanely awesome glass artist ever, I have built several solid lines of production that I produce consistantly, and place orders in my vendors hands on the day that I say they'll be done.
I haven't made alot of friends in the business in my 8years blowing glass. Some of it comes from working my ass off while my wife was still in graduate school, blowing my ass off after graduate school while we moved, found her job etc... and some comes from the fact that some other artists don't seem to like me very much... and some comes from the fact that I just don't want to be friends with people from the flaky/loser side of our business.
I got my start 8 years ago when I was laid off after 7 years in the printing/photography/graphic design industry. Some hippy friends of mine (Catfish and Kelly)rolled up to Philly in the motorhome and said "look what we do now!!!". 3 months later I was working for a buddies pressure washing company and blowing glass whenever I could. 5 years ago I went full-time and here I am.
I play guitar in a band. I love heavy metal. I love my dog. I love my wife. I listen to NPR and actually enjoy the Prairie Home Companion. I grew up playing Dungeons and Dragons. I like good beer. I like when people at the stores say "Oh your Rockstar, man I love your work"... or "I own 3 of our pieces man, they all hit great!". I think it's funny that I'm usually the only man who's working at the craft show I'm in. I dig the ocean, at night, with a big ass moon over the water. I like to ride my bicycle. I have to go back to work soon.
Even though I work all the time, sometimes feeling like a total slut who's being taken advantage of while everyone makes money but me, I still love my job.
I do craft shows and art shows whenever possible. When I have a free moment I make all the non-pipe stuff. Sometimes I even make art for arts sake.
