Aussie, is this your tutorial? If so, it's great! Been one of the best tutorials the flow has had for a while! Congratulations on getting published.

oh, is it in already? lol
I didn't realise they were gonna publish it in this issue, thanks for letting me know, I sat in front of my torch and with my arms around the tripod to get the shots and I put the camera on 2 second timer before every shot and then quickly get it all set up. I wasn't happy with a couple of the shots which were out of focus, but there you have it, I'll think of a better system fr the next tute. I have a rough copy on psd ... can't wait to get my copy of the Flow now :D
And thanks for the kind words, Icarus, too, glad you like it!

agreed !!
i don't do much sculpting these days, and most eyes i tend to use some cane i made a while back, but the realism and colorful striations you achieved are spot on.

these are some pieces I've had sitting around half finished since last year and finally finished when I've had some time recently among all the drama and stress that is my life at the moment. Obviously you can take whatever that tutorial gives you as far as you want to ... and you should ... I've still got a bunch of unfinished stuff which I might get to finish one day, lol ... James Yaun could tell you about all the stuff (usually somewhat experimental in nature) I tend to have lying around :dieslaugh
being known for making pipes can be a bit problematic here (so I try not to be known for it) by way of how people perceive you. I cut my teeth on making pipes back in the 90s and made a point of making pipes which didn't look like pipes ... but the whole culture of functional glass in Australia is different to the States (at the customer's end of things mostly), so as a vestigial pining for the metaphoric fjords I still make pipes for a bit of fun, but usually not many people get to see them ... except for friends who end up with them as presents :bouncy:

Hey Aussie,
A bit late to comment on a 5 year old thread but is there anyway I could get ahold of that tutorial. I am interested in making some eyes and I have seen atleast two different methods, I would like to try all of them as I start to stretch out of just pipe making.

The tutorial in the flow is a bit more extensive than the tute I published here on the Melting Pot, but this will give you the basics of that technique at the time of publication (my technique has evolved since then but what you get here and in The Flow is still valid). I'd still suggest getting that back copy of a the Flow, there's lots of other cool stuff in it :)

Cool, I would love to buy the issue. Is it the fall issue of 2010?

Just read that tutorial in the other thread and lo and behold that is exactly the method I learned from Mike Hurst in Ogden UT. I love it! Here is one of mine using that tech you wrote up.

Way to rock the eyes, Simian, nice work!
For those of you wanting to purchase a back issue with ththeutorial, it's the Summer of 2010 Flow issue with Gianni Toso's staircase on the cover.
