looks like you can use polarized sun glasses in conjunction with a laptop, as well.

Ya know, i was thinking of something like this with the the 3D movie glasses (the kind you can take home, I think the type of 3D is called "Real3D". It would be smally, but it would be something.

There's privacy sheets you can buy at the computer stores that stick on laptop screens.
A couple bucks for a pretty big piece. Just frame it up in a shoe box lid.
Or how do you say in English? The boxes that the sand for cats comes in,no?

I don't think that that is a polarizing filter. I think the system they use is called "microlouver". It's basically (as far as I understand it), a bunch of super thin lines cut into the sheet, that when you look straight on, allows light to pass through, but when you look at it from the sides (beyond a certain angle) does not.

Oh, I think you're right.
Still, polarizing filters can be purchased at surplus stores for even cheaper.
There's a place called ORVAC near here that has that sorta stuff. Everything for DIY anyways, if you're not afraid of clutter, solder smell and comb-over, pocket protector types cruisin' through.

I used to get enormous speakers there for $10-12 and make my own boxes.
Speakers, computer fans, motors, magnets, hard drives all kinds of shit, unboxed and marked super cheap.
My Dad goes there every two or three weeks and goes ape shit. I'm glad he has a Disneyland.
On eBay you can sometimes find the sheets of polarizing film they use on LCD screens for pretty cheap. They are used on almost all consumer electronics with backlit LCD screens. So you can find them in small sizes up to large sheets which would be used for computer LCD monitors.
As Icarus said you can use the glasses you get at the movie theater for watching 3D films. You know the black plastic ones that come in a bag like this:

I've been keeping all mine for each movie I see just for projects like this :D
Bust the thin film lenses out of the frames and then place them on top of each other, hold them infront of a light, and rotate one until you can't see through the pair anymore. In other words if you stack both on top of each other and you can see through them, that is not the correct angle. Rotate one until they turn black. Now separate them with something and put a light source behind them and wala!
Commercial polariscopes are extremely overpriced.

There was an article by Dougall Meloney in the Aug 2009 Fusion about this, pretty much the same idea, but I'm diggin' the youtubers meathod with the plastic storage container and flexable arm.
Swampy - picture was found off google, heh.

Anyone have any ideas for where to get something equivalent to the prismatic layer in a full colour polariscope?

Did I miss something? I bought like two sheets of polarized material for 20 bucks off ebay.
Hold sheet up to sun..(oh wait maybe that is what had got youz guys from Orgon confused!) :) hold piece up to sheet, look thru your stylish sunglasses that are polariod lens, turn sheet until the color come alive a la a Grateful Dead show,
Viola!

Fine for a black and white one. Mine is a plastic light diffuser, filter (polarized), and it also has an added layer to the polarized glass viewer, making it a "full colour polariscope". You get rainbows instead of shades of grey, colour based on the polarity of the light.

Hi Everyone - Thought you might like to see the tutorial Glass Alchemy did at AGI last year where Thomas and Henry showed everyone how to build an at home Polariscope. http://www.glassalchemy.com/cart/building-a-polariscope.
