i started doing vacstacks with bs the first one with blues looked fine.

i did one with lizard, lime, and sunshine(actually it was yellow) and they all faded to cream. if i worked the encasement any cooler i think it would crack.

i saw the rainbow tube that joannefelato posted and it looked great so im gonna try again.

i was wondering which bs colors dont fade much?

did rainbow today and it looks great.

without anything else but bs in the tube i focused better on what the bs wanted (the failed tube was half black)

Yeah the borostix are wicked weird. I've been getting paid to condense, mix and re-stretch them into round cane for the studio I work at since we got a large donation of them. I think some of them just fade from overworking. Did you include the lizard in the rainbow? Did it fade on the second attempt? I imagine encasing helped, and I'm curious as to how much.

vac stacked in 50x5 pulled down and sleeved in another piece of 50x5 about 50% longer than the original stack.

the lizard looked fine the second time.

i read sunshine fades more than yellow but sunshine looks brighter in photos. does it fade more than or to a lighter color than yellow fades to?

sort of related:

if you need to remix them, fill a 50mm tube on a blow tube with a whole pound of stix and cap the end. heat the far end and work the air towards the blow tube while vacuuming out the air. this clear coats the whole lot and keeps the color brighter. you can twist (but dont mix) for a better pull. pull it down so you have 3/4 " rod. to pull 7mm rod or stringer, do it from the fat rod, you'll get better and more accurate pulls. this should take no longer than 15 mins for the whole pound

how long of a blank? i couldnt fit a lb in a tube in one bundle, it'd be 2 deep in there. what wall thickness of clear? sounds like a good idea

i do have 10 pounds of borostix. i often burn all my color out as well.

50 x 3.2 i think is what i used. blank was about 4 inches long (i did not put them end to end). i didn't weigh the stix, just grabbed a really big handful out of a bag and guessed on the weight.

you have to thicken up your blow tube or brace it a little or it gets floppy, but this works great. i did a tutorial in glassline called vacuum cleaner encasement cane if you want the pics (it was for zamphirico cane not solid color, but the method is the same)

Sweet, thanks Cravyn you're wicked smart. Definitely gonna try that out.

One more question on the borostix front. Has anyone tried encasing and stretching any of the purples? They, as I'm sure we all know quite well, are completely horrendous and wack colors to work with. I'll have to try for myself of course, but I'm interested if anyone has had success...Cravyn??

spring purple held its color the best in the rainbow tube pull. im waiting on lazuli and eggplant to arrive. ill get back with you.

that barney purple works fine for me. the trick with some of the borostix colors is not to get them quite so hot (hence the mass encasement trick to keep the flame off the actual color). but even if you don't encase them, you can work them just fine, maybe just work a little farther out in the flame and pretend it's dichro. the sky blue will almost go white if you really cook it, but looks great when handled with care. on my torch, i just add a little compressed air to drop the temp, and then i don't have to even think about it

lizard fades pretty quickly... purple and most of the other hold fast.

is sunshine a brighter shade than yellow after they have been worked?
