I saw this in the local paper and thought ya'll pipers would be interested. Seems pretty darn cheap for American made glass, but I can only imagine that they have found a way to make it work in their favor.

This sounds cool, but I think it is a scam for these guys to unload cheap Overseas pipes and have monthly sales by having a membership. The pipes in the pics look like they were made in China or India. I also want to see who the featured artist is.
Abe
Wonder what that'll do for local(national?) pipe artists sales wise....

Wow, really? You guys think so, huh? That's pretty disheartening. If someone can prove it somehow, I guaruntee the East Bay Express would write a follow up slam article. They love doing things like that . . . Berkeley, ya know?

Wow, you guys rock (assuming that you are correct that they are imports).
2 things-
1. Isn't it illegal to sell an import without the "made in china" or "made in ____" sticker on it? If so then are they not screwed if they get caught?
2. Check out this epic article that the East Bay express ran in Feb. of '09.
http://www.eastbayexpress.com/eastbay/yelp-and-the-business-of-extortion-20/Content?oid=1176635
In it they expose Yelp of a huge blackmail scam. The article caused some serious damage, and led to Yelp reforming their company (If you don't know the East Bay, this is not a small weekly paper. It gets a lot of attention). Again I repreat, if someone could prove somehow that these are imports then I'm quite sure EBE would run an article that would do some damage . . .

Anyone in the bay area wanna take care of business? Ill provide the crowbar, free of charge of course. Ill even ship it overnight. These fuckers are gonna flood the market with this traitorous trash. Oh, and looking at their pics, yeah, definitely Indian. I was in a shop in Wisconsin Dells last week, all indian crap, including those same elephants (which I "accidentally" dropped and broke), those bubs, he even had some big ass, though fugly, inside out spoons, he said he pays $3.50. Thats about when the elephant hit the floor.
Yep, thats how I am. Im a fuckin asshole soon as I hear the words "I get this glass from India/China". Ill burn a fuckin house down.
Edit: ok, I figured out how to shit on their wall. It required me to click their "Like" button, but oh well. Is it really slander if it's the truth? Not that I care.

their mission statement:
Pipes2thepeople is an exclusive club to provide glass pipes to the people at wholesale prices - members receive a random pipe from our 'classes of glass' delivered to their doorstep - we track your account to make sure there is always something new and interesting every month! And the longer you are a member, the better it gets! Every month a new piece arrives at your door!
Paying members receive a different ‘class of glass’ every month ranging from compact travel pieces to sturdy table pieces to fun novelty pieces to sweet water filtration devices to custom artwork specifically geared towards the member!
You pay only $12.99 a month for the membership and you receive glass pipes in the mail that would sell in the store for anywhere from $15 to $80 and up!
Build your pipe Shelf of Glory or Pipe Drawer, give em away for karma, sell em for cash, don't worry about breaking them another's on the way! Spend less on 12 pieces than you would on one, and all quality pieces!
**Peace, Love and Pipes**
what it should say:
pipes to the people is open to anyone willing to overpay for cheap imports. members will recieve 1 random piece of crap monthly, which comes from a box that has 50 just like it. made in a real sweatshop just like youve seen on tv. for just 12.99 a month you pay for a whole box of imports that we keep, we send you just one. but thats not all. act now to get in early so you can build up your "class" collection. maybe one day you will recieve a 4 dollar bubbler(80 retail) and then brag to all of your friends about your new headdie.

well, they're obviously not super nice, but for 12.99, SHIPPED what can you really ask for? Any store you sell to at least doubles, if they have their shit together they might do 2.5-3x. if these guys pay 3$ per piece, and then 2.5 that for the glass, plus a $ or 2 for the time to set up the whole thing and keep track of accounts, plus the shipping.... They're really not marking them up that much. Considering there ARE shops selling these exact pieces for 20-45$, and these guys have some novelty involved, its not a bad deal, just cheap glass.
If you dont like it, you should start something better so theres something to compare to. Right now his pipe of the month club is better than yours! :contempla

08-13-2010, 01:28 PM
I agree with ScirE, i'm not selling anything yet, but i can understand how you guys feel upset about this. However I'm sure the folks that are buying these 12 dollar pipes aren't expecting the quality of a 50 dollar american made thick spoon that they'd buy at a head shop. For what it is, it'll get some use and then be a disposable piece that they can not care about. There's a use for this, it's not gonna take away from your sales of nice glass. Actually i'd be suprised if it lasted a year, maybe less if they get caught up in some legal drama. but time will tell...
CheeseNip
08-13-2010, 02:33 PM
Yeah but they're page does say you get a pipe worth between 10-60 and up, so maybe some of these people are expecting a nice 50 dollar american made thick spoon.. when its not.. i wouldnt give a damn if they didnt lie to the people. ScirE had a good point though.. someone needs to make a better one!
another real issue here was the pic of all that bullshit next to an american flag, and the claims that they have "featured artists"...
Maybe Boxfan can turn this around :)
from a pic tag
"In this photo: lying import slinging ass hats, made in a shop with no ventilation by a slave, import garbage, cheap import crap, ugly import trash, food stolen off my table, another job stolen from an American, made in India, more import garbage, import, NOT made in America, not made anywhere near America"
berning
08-13-2010, 03:39 PM
the issue is for me is simple , it has nothing to do with imported pipes, it's all about misrepresentation.
Yea I could give a shit less as well if they didn't say they are American made pipes when they are import pieces of shit. Its not like we signed up and are pissed about the piece of shit we just paid 12 bucks for.

Haha, you guys crack me up. You wrecked their page, that was hilarious. From their business point of view it must be horrifying.
I'm w/ Boxfan and the rest- they very well may be good peeps, my only qualm is the misrepresentation.
So right around when I first started the thread here (and before I knew that they were lame) I sent them an email telling them I was a local blower, and that I wasn't interested in making $4 i/o prodo, but that they could reference me in case they have any interesting projects in the future. Last night they replied w/ this-
"Thank you for the email,
We are in the process of building partnerships and friendships with local artisan glass blowers, and will be incorporating these items into rotation to valued members of P2TP. We have been contacted by several glass blowers already.
If you are interested or can recommend any talented people please let us know. Also we will be rolling out a merchant section of our site soon that will feature the work of any interested blowers.
Our goal is to provide a service to all who don't have easy access to pipes and who enjoy the privacy and anonymity of the home delivery, not to mention saving you from paying the extra high retail prices at head shops for the same quality gear!
We hope you will see the appeal of this service, we will contact you as we make additions to the site.
**Peace, Love & Pipes**
Pipes2thePeople.com"
I didn't reply. Then today at noon I received this-
"Thank you for for the civil conversation.
We are working hard to roll out improvements to our company, and will be gathering photos from any interested artist to display on the website. The merchant section of our site has always been part of the plan, and will be ready in the coming months. We would truly appreciate if you could show your support and interest in having your work featured by leaving a positive comment on our facebook. Besides the truth is that getting featured by P2TP will help U.
Thanks,

OK, i'm wrong on my previous post, thought it was an import vs american thing, if it's about misrepresenting, then I totally agree, I figure the buyers will find the quality is not 50-60 dollars worth, but probably less than 12 bucks worth. Then the problem will just fix itself, since they will cancel their subscription.

so i reread the original article... It does say the pieces come from within the us, they're in the us...?
It also says they will have featured artists on the webpage, but doesnt mention these specifically going into the rotation, and from the emails some of you guys have gotten from the fellow he plans on putting individual nice pieces up for sale eventually too.
it is lame that they threw the comes from usa in there, but i have known people who have bought pipes online that were literally mailed directly from thailand.
i linked the ali baba catalog in the comments, i wonder how much proof they need.
the easiest example to find was the elephant (http://www.alibaba.com/trade/search?SearchText=glass+pipes+elephant&CatId=0&IndexArea=product_en&sq=y&fsb=y).

Thanks to all who have contacted us directly, and thank you for your support and input. Pipes2thePeople welcomes constructive criticism, as we are here not only to supply our members with accessible, affordable utility and art glass pieces , but also to provide a service to glass artisans to increase their exposure and business. For those who have not taken the time to understand our business and how our service can benefit the glassblowing community, please do take a moment to read a little more about us and engage in productive dialogue with us.
For the record, our suppliers send us about 75% US made glass, and about 25% import; our supply all comes from US companies - and we are a US company as well. Reading over the East Bay Express, we can see how the ambiguity of their wording can confuse someone who is already scared by an emerging business model and have contacted them so we can clarify the distribution of our sourcing.
We are a four month young four person grassroots operation operating on a shoestring and a vision - our membership has reached a point where we can now offer our services on the merchant end to local and independent artisans to reach a national audience, which has been our intent all along - hence the article in the East Bay Express stating we WILL be featuring independent and local artisans.
Ask yourself: How can my glass operation benefit from being featured in a national club (and soon global as we have had a multitude of requests to ship abroad, from Australia to Chile to the UK) - The World's First Glass Pipe of the Month Club - where members are willing to pay $150+ a year to receive a pipe every month. This is your prime target market - they love and collect glass pipes. Our exposure goes far beyond just our pipe receiving members as well, as many people just subscribe to our email newsletter.
Frankly, we are glad there is a debate going on about our club within the glass blowing community - no press is bad press and we have seen a major spike in membership in the past month. Now that more glassblowers know about us, we have a wider supply pool of people who will be interested in expanding their business.
In the end, it comes down to this: We have created a community of like-minded people where our members can get great and affordable glass from across the country, and our affiliated glassblowers can reach a qualified target audience and build their business on a national, and soon global level. If glassblowers don't have a website, we are even working on a service to build a web-store for them. We are rapidly growing and expanding our site as fast as we possibly can, so please spread the word that we are here for everybody - We're just a couple guys in San Francisco with a vision to bring the Pipes to the People.

We are rapidly growing and expanding our site as fast as we possibly can, so please spread the word that we are here for everybody - We're just a couple guys in San Francisco with a vision to bring the Pipes to the People.
**Peace, Love and Pipes**
PS - We don't heavily advertise this information, but we also donate 5% of year end profits to charities to end gang violence in honor of our deceased friend and former business partner - noted at the bottom of the East Bay Express article.

Ok, I hear ya p2p. But I have one question...
When will your catalog offer me 100% US made glass?
We should have a new section on our site called the Cloud 9 Level membership in the next week or so detailing that information :)
Thanks for asking and spread the word!

Im sorry but the numbers don't make sense to me either. I can't see any non indian/chinese blowers selling you anything you could make profit on. You are for profit right? There's no way I or any blower I know that could sell 12 pieces for $150 that would keep the customer interested. Not unless all they want is bats and spoons. For $500 im sure I could hook a brother up with a nice 12 piece collection of hand pieces. Maybe even a small tube included.
P2P your idea is brilliant, but I think you will find a massive amount of resistance from blowers as long as you carry foreign goods. My suggestion is rethink your strategy just a bit, raise prices and carry the real deal. Real collectors will know the difference and I'd bet my balls they would be down. Higher quality is the way to go, believe me. I've seen stores that carried nothing but imports give the homegrown a try, saw the results in business and stopped selling imports all together.
You have a real chance here to do the right thing, the choice and opportunity is yours.

100% of the glass on your facebook page is imported. if you are claiming otherwise then you are deceiving your customers as you did in the East Bay Express article. are you claiming that you're buying them from an american distributer and didn't know they were all imported? perhaps i can help you to be clear. every piece you've ever posted can be found in the ali baba catalog (http://www.alibaba.com/trade/search?SearchText=glass+pipes&Country=&CatId=15&IndexArea=product_en&fsb=y). you may not be able to tell the difference but we can.
as for benefiting our market... you've got to be kidding. you are the wal-mart of the pipe world.

I still don't feel like you are even trying to address us like a person. Quit saying "we" and talk to us. Answer a few questions - if we have to waste time emailing you, it'll just get reposted in here anyways, because many of us have the same questions.
Where are you getting your "bag" of assorted pieces? I've never head of a company just giving you a grab bag. Fess up - Mer nailed it, your pics are ALL of import crap. And why are you being so vague about when you're going to offer american made pieces? It's not like there's a lack of local talent, so what's the hold up?
If you want to be legitimate, post on your website (and facebook) that members will be getting import crap with the standard package. Let people know what they're getting. There are plenty of dumb/uninformed people out there who don't care where their pieces come from, cater to them.
Until you're honest with your customers, you're going to be getting crap from us. (well, at least me, it's hot and I've nothing better to do than sit in front of my computer and AC and call bullshit on a bunch of liars)
the original article in the east bay express (http://www.eastbayexpress.com/gyrobase/pipes-2-the-people-goes-national/Content?oid=1971859) is still up and they are not deleting comments. if you would like to bring further attention to the misinformation in this article you can contact the editor and author of the story, david downs at his email address, editor@eastbayexpress.com . of course it goes without saying that we will be most persuasive if our letters are well thought out and polite. i've requested that they make a retraction and consider doing an article on american pipemakers so that they might educate the readers that they've misinformed.
No reason to hide P2P.... some long bullshit ramble ain't gonna soothe us here,

WE ARE FULL TIME BORO WORKERS NOT SKEEVY STONERS.
Speak for yourself.
Just because YOU buy it from a US company doesn't mean it's US made. In my opinion that statement is inane.
I certainly hope that you are not inferring that any of the members here are scared of your business. Personally I find it offensive that you claim any of the glass you've shown is American made. Hell, even I could teach someone, in one day, to make better pipes than what you've pictured.

i noticed the verbiage as well. slight, but tricky. :twitch:
put this on 'em.
MADE IN THE USA
:chilling:
I bet they could make a sticker to slap on every pipe. Then again there is probably already a chinese sweat shop pouring sheets of those stickers out for a nickel a crate. The world we live in..

there are laws against doing that. ;)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Made_in_USA
The Made in USA mark is a country of origin label indicating the product is "all or virtually all" made in the U.S. The label is regulated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
But is the label itself printed in the US? I'm not trying to split hairs, simply curious. I understand that you can't legally label something that was not made in the US as such, but is the actual physical sticker made in the US? That was the major point of my previous post.

well their last post sure said a mouthful in a few words or less. I read "we are here to learn what you know, but not to converse here, email us, but don't expect us to share our thoughts with the group we just joined."
Fascinating.
