View Full Version : Blocking Zombie threads
Although I do love the "Go get 'em" attitude of any undying entity, there have been a shitload of needless threads bumped well after death that would not have been tampered with if the folks at home would have noticed the date. example from 2006 - 2010 (http://www.talkglass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3701)
Is there a way to get a post confirmation prompt from the "Post Quick Reply" button if the last post was more than 30 days old? It would keep a slew of crap from bumping to the top.
Also, maybe make adding a vote to a poll not bump it to the top somehow.
Is it not worth the coding?
Is this vBulletin 4?

Maybe an alert that the user is posting to an old thread (> 6 mos?), but I don't thinking locking is a good idea - sometimes things change or something really useful is to be said. I've def seen old threads brought back to life for good reason on a somewhat regular (although not that often) basis.
I do agree though that it'd be good to let users know that it's not considered polite to bring threads up from the dead, at least not without good reason...
Just my 2¢.

Dont make me dig up the oldest thread in here. Dont tempt me. I love antiques, be they digital or otherwise.

I like the idea of a notification before you post. There's probably a plugin out there already, as this is not an issue unique to our forum. Otherwise, it's probably a few hours of custom programming time and bug hunting. We're running vBulletin 3 at the moment, but I've got plans to do some pretty massive upgrades when I get the chance. If you can find a plugin, I'll see what I can do about getting it installed.
i think the notification is a good idea too. a 30 day lock is a little rash. although i've never understood the point in bringing up threads from the grave either.
I'll start lookin... If not, keep it in mind :D
Its a discussion forum. Let people discuss old threads if they want

I've never understood why people hate thread necromancy. New information appears, new users may have a fresh opinion to offer, etc., even if the original thread is a year old.

I think it was Douge introduced me to this concept;
Basic worm composting; lesson one, the bucket and spade (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skCV2L0c6K0).
Note: the Geico guy talks about cups in the video but I promise you, there is only one cup involved.
But basically, if you don't have any interest in a duff or ancient thread or useful to contribute to it, then just don't write in it. Simple as.
I saw the necrophile, saw what had happened and simple logic revealed that adding to the clusterfuck will only make the clusterfuck bigger.
This must be sooooo frustrating for someone like my friend Pogo with a brain the size of a small planet.
or not.
lol
Maybe I could just PM nude pictures of the elderly to anyone bringin' up a dead thread without a relevant comment.
I love antiques...
No, nevermind... Around here a prize like that encourages that kind of behavior.
Primathon - look at this (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?p=1056647)
I bet that booger could be modified... I can code, as can a few other active members around here... just sayin'.

Wow. Nude pictures of the elderly? You blew my mind you crazy bastard :insane:
I don't see what the harm is in letting people talk about what they will. I suppose if a particular thread pisses you off or slanders you, if you explained why to the powers that be and asked politely they could lock it. But if you're just tired of people talking about a technique, well, isn't that why lots of newbies join here? I've seen some older threads pop up and the ensuing conversations about the technique delved into new waters.
I have no problem with old threads being dug up for relevant comments... talking about techs is great... sharing is great (I'm not self taught AT ALL)... In fact, I'd rather have someone dig up a thread RELEVANT to a tech they want to talk instead of starting a new one.
Talking about how the taco's at the walmart gave you the runs because it VERY LOOSELY relates to post #2 of a 3 year old thread is just annoying. Start a new fuckin thread, called "Wal-mart's taco's made me shit my pants."
Then, receive *NEW* relevant comments about your shitty pantaloons.:D
