I'm thinking about going to VCU for my master's degree with a focus in glass. I'm looking to hear from anyone else who has done that and finding out what you thought about the program. I know there were a couple people on here that went to VCU, but I can't remember who they are...

Are there that many people who want to focus in glass? I mean, I know there are a ton of people out there doing it, but are there that many who want to do it in school?

I have a visit scheduled in a couple months. Looking forward to checking it out and talking with them. I'm not going to be finished with my bachelor's degree for a little bit, so I won't be doing the master's program immediately. I do need to start planning though.

Yeah, I e-mailed Brad yesterday.

yes, there are, and they aren't that many good MFA programs in the country for glass all the good ones are pretty competitive. it is focused on conceptual work, and the hot shop. so, if you are looking for a lampworker based program this isn't it.

what are you getting your bachelors in?

I'm getting my bachelor's in graphic design. That's what I've been doing for the past 21 years, and the field I'd like to stay in to pay the bills.

Actually, hot shop work is what I'm looking for.

I know 15 years ago when I was applying MFA Graduate programs were very competitive. I applied to 10. Got in 2 and received a full fellowship at FSU where I attended and earned my MFA.
It was pretty much based on the portfolio and letters of recommendation.
It is also very important to have an interview with the major professor in program you are applying to. They really like to put a name and work to a face . Charles Hook actually made me cast Iron and run a cupola for him before he got me my Fellowship ( Full Free Ride+ a paycheck).
I would advise you to Visit VCU and get them to want you in their program. They may actually put a pipe in your hand to see what you can do.
It is a huge school. Largest sculpture dept in the country. I have friends that have attended there and taught there. Great place.
Good luck.
