Glass pipes soon to follow. That database is bigger since pipers seem to not know how to resize their pics... :rolleyes :lol
resize? Shit, I can hardly figure out how to post. I love that about gp, the resize thingy.

I'd be glad to post a tutorial for you guys that don't know how to resize pics. It would REALLY help the sites out from going down so often.

Thanks Misha.. I've been considering doing that as well.
Hooray that Glass Artists is up again!
Resizing is a common problem, so there are even websites like http://www.resize2mail.com/ that will do it via browser.

resizing .. . .
i personally run my monitor at 1600x1200 , and really like the larger images that allow you to see sharp detail ...and set some kickass backgrounds .. and personally anything smaller than 800x600 is almost too small to get an idea of whats going on unless its a really great macro shot . ..
what are the sizes you guys would like to see posted? if there were guidelines i think most would follow them, or perhaps size limits[100-200Kb perhaps?] on individual pics... something like that .. but really anything below 800x600 is anoyingly small for me at least...

Any Photoshop wannabe-guru's in here? Let me know if you want to learn how to setup "actions". I have an action that I setup/recorded that allows me to pick a folder of images, and resize them by a specific percentage or specific size, and then optimizes them (picks a good balance between sharpness and file size; smaller is faster loading, less storage on gp.org's server) and can do literally hundreds of images with only a few clicks of the mouse, and not having to sit at the computer while IT does ALL the work. This really comes in handy when you are busy and taking alot of pics and posting alot at once and often. It's fairly easy to setup and run if you have photoshop 6? or above and some basic knowledge with it. Hit me up if you are interested, and I'll make a how-to. It's kind-of complicated maybe to average joe/jane? so I haven't typed it out yet, but if there's enough demand for it, I'll share the knowledge.

Cliff what I mean is a LOT of people on glasspipes as compared to on glassartists, use the uploader to resize their pics to the site minimum which is 1024x768, instead of resizing them to that size first and then uploading them. This causes the site to fill up faster, thus causing it to go down more...

ah i see whats going on now...
so whats happenning is that the server is getting overworked watermarking and resizing peeps pics... to the Maximum size on the site of 1024x768
If your image is larger than 1024 x 768 pixels, it will be reduced to that size. It's recommended that you resize your images to fit this size before uploading if at all possible, so that your images will upload faster.
as for image resizing and management, i recommend Picasa2 its free and has some cool web related features - you can select a group of pics you want to post and click export and it will batch resize them and put them in a upload folder [or whatever you set up]

oh and if anyone wants a gmail account with 2324+Mb of storage.. i'll hook ya up - :spend:

I once read awhile back that uploading pics, regardless of size, had nothing to do with the site going down?
Resizeing is good eh.

Re-sizing the pics to the site maximums will help keep the site up longer. It's the database that fills up that makes it go down...not necessarily the pics, but also the info it has to record.
So ya steve, re-sizing is good. :)
When you upload on either site it has a link to infran, which is a kick ass free pic app, and you can batch with it. I'll make a tutorial on this when I can.

i'd second the picasa2 program.. it's great for managing and touching up photos without understanding/obtaining photoshop. it does some great color shifts for not so great lighting situations.
i forgot what i do with resizing.. photoshop the last time i remember, i'll have to look at picasa some more =)

Ya if you have photoshop this is a good way to resize all imgs at once and put em in a folder ya can find easy to upload after:) http://www.wowwebdesigns.com/power_guides/web_photo_gallery/ this is for older versions but pretty much the same all the way up jsut beter features on the newer vers
then you can just upload pics outa folder all resized, only bad thing is you get out what you put in, so if you need to crop photos to get what you want to see to fill the whole pic you screwed jsut have to do it manually
hope that helps some of yalll
