Hi folks. Elaine and I want to extend a scholarship offer to those of you that are fairly new at working with glass.
AGI has become an incredible learning and networking experience for lampworkers from all walks of life, people that work in specific styles, those of you that produce a particular item, as well as varying levels of experience. Over the past 10 years, everyone has gone back to their studios with a new perspective on working with glass, as well as renewed enthusiasm and a network of friends and acquaintances.
I feel that it would be beneficial for some “Newbies”… and I don’t mean that in a derogatory way… who may not feel that they have enough experience to attend AGI (not true in any case, but some people feel that way) to participate next year.
With that in mind, we are offering one free “B” ticket (includes everything except a reserved work space), or 2 half price “B” tickets, depending on the amount of responses we get…“B” tickets are $550.00 for the entire week.
To apply for this assistance, please mail us a letter (no e-mails) with some things about yourself and why you would like to attend The Art Glass Invitational / AGI in 2011. Also include your GLDG / Talkglass forum name and join date, as well as photos or links to your online galleries. Correspondence can be sent to:
The Glass Blowing Center
114 Leonard Road
Hilliards, PA 16040
Attn: Wonka Scholarship Fund
We ask that you meet the following criteria:
-2 years or less glass working experience
-Member of this forum for at least 3 months
-1st time AGI guest
-Someone who doesn’t have much interaction with other blowers
-A trustworthy person that is eager to advance their skills
-Somebody who is truly in need of financial assistance**
**Please let me clarify this, as I feel it is VERY important:
Sure, everybody likes to get free things, discounts, bargains, etc. Some people can afford to do without these things and see it just as a “bonus” that they have saved or gained something. I really want to help people out that are not as fortunate as some of you are. The scholarship is worth $550.00 (or $275.00 x 2), so if you can do without it, please let someone less fortunate have the opportunity to take advantage of this offer.
Also, I’ll state my views in plain terms: Some people are "poor" or "less fortunate" by choice… the ones that blow their money on stupid shit. Wants and needs are two completely different things in my mind, and if you have every new toy and gadget on the market, please consider cutting back a bit and put some of your money aside for your education.
It drives me crazy when people blindly spend themselves into a deep hole, and then complain that they’re broke. I hold the terms, “personal accountability”, and, “fiscal responsibility”, very near and dear to my heart. I wouldn't mind some extra spending money myself, but we are choosing to do without it in an effort to benefit others.
In closing, your application will be accepted on the “honor system” for which we will take your word. If we find that you misrepresented yourself in any way, the offer will be rescinded immediately.
Thanks for listening, and Elaine and I hope to help as many of you as possible now, as well as in the future : )
Warm wishes,
Tom and Elaine Doner
