well i am hoping that at least a few of yall have had a chance to use the new kimble product (rod) and let me know what you think of it?

i use alot of 6 and 8 mil and need to order a case of each . normally i am all simax but since i use this in a 50/50 ratio of encasing and then the rest gets used for punties and bridges. i figured i may try the kimble out. dont want any chordy, seedy glass though and the simax has been good to me so far.

seems the kimble is a little less since its on sale most of the time which is why i was thinking of it. is the qualtiy there people?

thoughts???

Kimble is cleaner and dirt removes easier on kimble and simax boils easier and degrades faster.

It you use Kimble to cover fume, does the fume work differently?

i don't know that we ever said we had a revolutionary new Kimble glass. it is being made in this country, in Vineland. and it is Kimble glass. seems to be the same quality that i've always seen from them. the rods are clean as can be from what i've seen. we made some some really sweet millis using kimble, and they turned out great. fuming this glass is a treat too.

All I've used for rod, ever, has been kimble and schott, totally like the kimble over the schott, it takes a beating much better, seems cleaner and the schott boils to easily. Sorry, cant compare the simax rod, never used it.

I prefer Kimble , its USA made and if not mistaken GA uses it for their cullet . If you look at all the specs of Kimble they closest match the specs from some color companies , I feel this is better and less likely to have issues . Does seem to take a bit and seems to almost show you before you push it too far , gets an odd white hot glow before boil yet you can keep it here relatively easy with out stepping over the line

I too prefer Kimble glass over simax any day, although with the price off glass and the horrible shipping costs here to Alaska i usually settle for simax. I have found that if you kiln you rod and tube stock up to the usual 1050 - 1100 and let cool and normal rate the simax ends up with much more simular characteristics to that of Kimble, im not saying its perfect but is is a noticeable difference from that of non pre-kilned simax. Although it does take more time to prepair and means running your kiln more.

Kimble tube gets a +1 for outside fume work and outside fume encasement. Haven't done much else with it.

The old Kimble tubing had rough cut ends and would have a few bubbles in it now and then, I don,t know about the new tubing though. For me the Kimble rods are the only kind to use, they are super clear and easy to work.

I've used quite a bit of both simax and kimble and i can say they are both good for certain things. for example, for fume pipes, honeycombs, and frit pipes i like the kimble tube and rod. I prefer simax if im doing pendants because i use a lot of striking colors and they get foggy and blurry in kimble, where they stay really vibrant and clean looking in the simax. basically, i don't use striking colors with kimble unless its an inside frit pipe. kimble still has rough ends, but i haven't had a single quality issue in somewhere around 10 cases. simax is nice because the ends are polished and they are five foot, instead of four and quality is always good.

The Simax tube I've scored from Generations is always good, no probs here it's great for sleeving fumed cobalt tube or making up tube from stickstack.

One of these days I'll ask Arik about where he gets the tube with the pretty millis already melted in, you just cut it off to the length you need. Apparently.
