Devit popular ?????

lately i have been hearing it alot, you know the vast amounts of recent requests for devit or phase separation on thier custom pieces.. So what's up, i guess devit is in right now and phase separation is the new hot shit. so some of you might want to rethink your strategies..

I had people wanting to buy FULLY devited pieces , I was just starting at the time and could not make a piece that did not devit all over , I mean bottles with a frosted look horrid devit . I never sold them cause they were "mistakes" , and was always pissed cause nothing was shiny unless I took what seemed like hours painstakingly fire polishing it .

aaaaaaaah hahaha... Ok, im pretty sure everyone on this thread so far is being sarcastic, cept for maybe nubb. Nubb, are you serious?? are you sure they didnt just want sandblasted stuff? and they dont know what to call it. I really dont think most customers know what devit/phase sep. is.

i'm thinking maybe they're talking about "divots" like the bumps that you get when you chill the glass rapidly on a steel marver. i could be way off though.

and no its when the sodium is burned out of the glass to the point that it is no longer the same glass..

When we do trade pieces I want the the piece I get from you to be entirely phase seperated. But not devitrified!!!!!!

If you can flame polish it, it's not true devit.
Devitirification is the nasty hazing that won't go away ... try blowing a 4 inch, thick ball on a major burner. You'll see it after about 25 minutes of heating without anything really happening.
If you can polish it away, t's probably the wrinkling that results from moving something when the inside is hot and the outside isn't. "Devitrification" means the glass has lost some chemicals and is no longer glass.
Phase separation, I don't think about that.

Yeah 100% serious , I had always figured they wanted etched or sandblasted , thats why I wouldnt sell them since I was not wanting them to get something that was a disaster waiting to happen , they didnt care even if I told them it was a mistake they still would want it , but I would always stress about the stress in the glass , not wanting to give a product that was ready for destruction .

Has anyone tried looking at an annealed piece of devitrified glass , through a polariscope ? I dont have one but now am curious to know if you can anneal the stress out or if it somehow changes the chemical structure of the surface or something to create or generate stress .
