Xmas balls are a great way to start. In order to make a pipe, you have to heat all the color on into a nice gooey ball before you start your shaping. Try some frit inside and try making some marbles, it's harder than it looks. I saw Essential lampworking DVD on one of the pirate sites.

Hey Plumb,

I'm in Epsom NH. Maybe we could hook up sometime and I could show you a few things. Damn blowing for only a month and working a CC+ ! Way to go getting set up good from the start. My first piece of advice, blow because its fun not to pay the bills. It will be way too frustrating that way. Intentions lead the way.

I'm actually heading your way to make some sales hopefully before christmas.

hey slick i deff agrea with ya about christmas balls being a great way to start! im learning so much just making them! ive wrapped and raked a couple and tried some other things to, not any frit yet tho and it is harder than it looks! took me ah few tries just to be able to blow a perfect ball.

hey chumms,
i would love to hook up bro! epsom really isnt that far from me like 35 min. ive alwqays been a craftsman and artist and have always wanted to work with glass and i love it!!!
i did some homework and the biggest thing i heard people saying was if ya got the $ get a torch you can grow with and not outgrow!! altleast for ahwile. so i got a smokin deal on the cc+, brand new for 1500 and i couldnt turn it down! same thing with the kiln i wanted to be able to grow and be able to make what ever i wanted when my skills were there!!
i deff here ya about payin the bills right now and i do have a day job but ive made this investment knowing this is what i want to do to pay the bills. my mind far outreaches my hands at the moment tho!!!!!

chubbs pm me and ill give you my number, i would like to be able to meet with some one once a week for a couple months, eatheir my place or theres and learn by watching and instruction ya no.
anyway please pm me chubbs or any one else who would be ok with spreading some knowledge.

yoo i just started a couple weeks ago as well. I live outside lowell in massachusetts.
I got the basic shape of a pipe on my 4th day, anyway being so stoked that i actually had something I made to smoke out of I had to keep trying. After a few days I was looking down at my bench and realized I had around 50 bowls and only a few pendants. Since I'm so new mostly all the pipes have something wrong with them, like the bowl hole is too large or small, the bubble that i blow out might be uneven, i might now heat evenly when I go to push the bowl. Theres a lot of things that can go wrong. But yeah so I realized none of these are good enough to sell(maybe a few) and tubing isn't cheap. So i held off on the pipes for awhile and I'm finding working with rod and just making smaller pendants its soooo much easier. Its been really exciting I actually started to sell some of my pendants and I only started a couple weeks ago.

So yeah basically hold off on the pipes for awhile and focus on pendants because I'm sure you could make some that can sell.

good idea with the christmas balls i never thought of those.

I'm a noob just like you lookin for a teacher so someday maybe we can collab or something. By the way I heard a rumor of studio space that might be going in somewhere in nashua.

Its cool to see there are other people in New England who share this passion

Look up Killbee (spelling? real name Aaron Slater) owner/operator of the old Queen City Lampworks in Manchester.

The studio will be having its 'Winter Glass Expo' soon - like the 8th+ year running - many flameworkers native to southern NH area will be there. Food, music, lots of cool glass and glassy folks.

Find the studio on the internet and then VOLUNTEER to help with their show!! Its a very small little group with a lot of experience.

Aaron is a regular teacher and a (notable IMO when looking for people to teach beginning pipes) reasonable person. I do not think he has been a full time pipe maker for a very long time, ten years at least. Makes everything but pipes, I think mostly marbles.

There are lots of teaching a learning options in southern NH.

Good luck!!!
