I gave myself an early xmas present and they arrived in the mail today ... 2 spanking new plasma drivers. Wooohooo! So this is a spanking new piece, oh god, it feels like it's been too long without doing anything in the way of plasma. I only have neon at the moment and I couldn't wait until I had something else to throw into the mix, so this is just neon in a very deep vacuum and about 15000 Volts (first time I used my electron microscope vac pump, too, mwahaha).

So, so awesome.
A plasma set up is definitely on my wish list.

thanks, I needed something fun to do, over the last week I've made 201 x 70mm diameter, light wall, 100mm tall, round bottom jars and my brain hurt from the drudgery. I get the urge to gurge just thinking about it, but it's an ongoing job, pretty easy to do and good $ ... and it did give me the opportunity to concentrate on listening to some music I haven't listened to for a while (eg Metallica's acoustic sessions) and let my hands go on autopilot.

Riley, yes I know of Bernd and have seen his work, it's totally rad!

I'm going to a steampunk NYE bash which should be fun, and they asked me if I'd be interested in putting some glass into an exhibition which will be on display there ... fittingly the party is inside an old electrical substation. I've kept my ideas at bay, because I'm pretty busy right now and I know if I start letting them flow, I have to make a piece right now (like I absolutely had to make del fuego una taza today, lol)! I'll post something fun in a few weeks time.

hey Aussie, rockin! So did you use a standard bombarder or did you bombard with a kiln and vacuum pump?

I don't have a bombarder, that kind of current scares the shit out of me and it's not really essential for this kind of application. "Bombarding" refers to a process using electricity to get rid of organics, so the kiln process shouldn't be called that.
But you're right in that hanging the piece in the kiln at annealing temp will burn out organics quite well. Sometimes I suck the piece down hot, which has the added advantage of helping with evacuating it more thoroughly, and sometimes I just let it cool down inside the kiln and then use a heat gun while I'm sucking down to help that process.

Could you recommend a good book on the plasma process?

I'm not sure if there is much in the way of books out there about plasma, I don't have one. A lot of what I learned came directly from Tom Galbraith and the rest has been trial and error and a lot of google research. There is quite a bit of helpful info out there on the world wide interwebs, though ...

glassinine - you can get started with under $1000, it's been a while since I did my research about how all this stuff works, I can't even remember what webs I was looking at. Just search google with plasma, neon, sculpture etc. From memory there was a fair bit out there. I'm sure there's more info out there since i last looked.

Alien ... who said anything about creating a vacuum without a machine? All I said was that I don't have a bombarder ... bombarders don't create the vacuum, vacuum pumps do ;)

awesome info, I like the idea of drawing off from a just annealed piece. I am working on a sculpture, and am having the darndest time finding boro electrodes in the US. Do you have a good source you can pass on?

So on the piece with yellow in the tips, it looks like the purple in the main body is argon or a mixture? If so, what did you use to get the yellow gas? (it doesn't look like a phosphor)

All in all, very impressive work, thanks for posting.
