so I've decided not to use my basement as a glass studio and instead got really lucky and found a place to do it. so now all i need to do is order my stuff Ill be getting

Gtt Lynx- probally from Artco

Paragon SC-2 with a bead door- 590 shipped from clayking.com

Some Rimbrand Shade-3 glasses from mountianglassarts.com

The place im renting has all the tools and hoses and such along with 2 oxy concentrators and a Skutt kiln but i want my own kiln too incase i ever leave there or want to do soft glass with a hothead at home.

Ok now for the question...

id like to spend about 200 on glass, The place im renting has a ton of glass laying around but i want to make sure i have what i need too.

i want to start with Beads, marbles, pendants, spoons, and onies.

I have zero ideas about what to buy.

i was thinking maybe a half case of 25mmx4mm kimble clear tube. Is this a good place to start?

i was going to buy some clear rod too and wondering what size is good for making what i want to make?

and then for color i was just gonna get a sample color kit and mess around with that but mostly just fume shit till i get good.

any recomendations welcome

Wow, sounds great.

If you are renting in a studio presumably there will be other people around you that will be able to talk to and share info with; lampworkers and opinions, let me tell you, unlimited.

So IMO, medium to long term just focus on being cool to work with, friendly to talk to. That's gonna be your learning technique as far as getting advise on what color and materials to use for whatever. Seriously. Be cool. For once.

In the short term, if you buy by the piece and are just looking to experiment, $200 is gonna get you a lot of glass. You will be stoked.

Okay retail, 200, beginner, experimenting, pipes, pendants . . . what would I buy?

2 sticks (individual lengths) of 12.7HVW clear (that's 12.7mm - 1/2 an inch - tubing that is thickly walled or heavy wall or HVW).

2 sticks of 12mm rod (solid rod of glass about 1/2)

1 stick 12.7HVW china blue

1 stick 19HVW clear

1 stick 19mm clear rod

1/2 pound (do they sell 1/4's?) each 4mm and 7mm clear rod

Spend the rest on:

Color rod sample pack

Frit sample pack

Silver

Libations for your new bench-lord

wow thats very detailed thank you so much for the imput.

There are no other lampworkers at the place im renting, but there used to be and they kept all the stuff. they mainly do ceramics, painting, and music at this place. I do however have a friend that is gonna show me the ropes.

I totally agree and i read on here as much as I can and am getting a copy of contempoary lampworking. I have a friend whos going to show me what she knows and if i ever outgrow her Ill take a few classes in Chicago. My Lynx and kiln are ordered and on the way and tomorrow im going to make a glass order.

Once I get everything and melt some glass im sure ill figure out more questions to ask :chilling:

That break down sounds good. Just a couple tip that work for me.
Get on emailing list of a few of the popular glass sales website, they send monthly specials and sales. I started with a norhstar sample pack, I pretty much only buy shorts and seconds when they are in sale. Also you will find clear sale, make sure you label the color with tape and the brand of clears. I did a bunch of silver fuming
Turn out really good. A week later I couldn't get the same results. It pissed me off for a week until I figure out it was a different brand of clear.

Thanks!, If your still looking for a kiln i found my paragon Sc-2 digital with a bead door for 590 shipped from clayking.com, seemed to have the best prices on kilns.

I bought my eye protection, a few graphite rods, a flaring tool, a rake, some mandrels and bead release from mountian glass

I bought my color from trevsglass and i got 2lbs of momka's multicolored shorts and 3lbs of northstar shorts.

Then i bought my clear, my frit, and my silver from ABR.

I shopped around alot and it was hard to compare prices because no one seems to list most of their glass because either they dont want to ship it or they dont want people just undercutting them. At least by ordering from a few different suppliers ill get to see if any go above and beyond with customer service and stuff.

Hope to see some pics of your stuff soon!

I stayed away from Chinese glass and bought a Half case of Kimble and a half case of Schott. do you know what kind of glass was the one that worked really good for you?

Thanks for the offer man, but I just meant I'm waiting for it to arrive. Got it from Glass Hive. Their custy service was some of the best I've had anywhere. Anyone ever lookin for a new kiln, I will definitely direct them that way. But I think it should be here next week. Im stoked
