Tomorrow im going back with a friend and shes gonna teach me stuff. (I hope she teaches me how not to melt beads to the mandrel cause i made way more but kept having to break them off)

try to keep the mandrel out of direct flame,, or make things off mandrel. also using a decent quality bead release helps TONS,, I use Dirty Louis when I make beads and I like it very much.

well my clear finally came and although i spent most of the day hauling boxes, sorting stuff, and making shelf space, I managed to make a few pendants.

This one i dropped while hot and got crap stuck in the glass and cracked
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a76/marlbromn30/stuffs003.jpg

This one turned out pretty clean (well for me on my 2nd day) and is now a key chain fob
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a76/marlbromn30/stuffs006.jpg

i think i got the hang of taking beads off the mandrel now so thats good. more to come this weekend. I want to make a simple onie.

I got the grabbers from Trevsglass, I think they were like 35 bucks. Im not sure that color your talking about but I did use Momkas multi colored shorts on the beads (also from trevsglass, think it was 12.50 a lb) and then the top pendant has alaskan thunder frit inside and a silver strike rod for the loop. the bottom one is just double amber purple frit inside.

Thank you for looking

Keep it up, it's all about the journey. You had fun and that's what matters. If you want to learn more about making pendants, I highly recomend DVDs by Brent Graber and step by step tutorial books by Chad Trent.

I dont have anything to really show today. I brought my torch over to a local lampworkers garage, paid him 30 bucks and he showed me how to make some stuff for 4 hours. I can now do implosions, xmas ornaments, chillums, one hitters (contsrictions are my friend now) and probally a lot more when i put the techniques together. once i master what hes taught me on my own im gonna go back for another 4hrs. It was also nice seeing what tools other people use, i had just been flame cutting EVERYthing! needless to say after working with his tools i came home and ordered diamond shears, the 3pk of gold handled bonsai scissors, and a spring loaded tube cutter. I was gonna get a mosaic wheel cutter too but everyones prices are INSANE! they sell them at Harbor Frieght for 8 bucks and if it ever breaks or gets dull you can return it no questions asked for life.

I hate waiting to see what my stuff looks like outta the kiln!

Thanks man and good luck with getting the rest of your stuff i want to see pics! also when you order from ABR make sure you order more then one thing, the shipping from them is goofy i tell you! i ordered scissors and a small set of diamond shears (could have fit in a brown envalope) and the shipping was like 9 bucks and they sent it in this like 20x20x 6 in box

Are you baking the fuming in? Hit it with an oxy flame until it's almost all gone and then hit it with a reducing flame. Also make sure the piece is well heated before you start fuming on it.

The shaping on those last 2 are phenomenal by the way.

im not sure about "baking the fuming in" basicly i make the piece then bring it to the end of the flame *been using a slightly oxidizing flame and put my rod with the silver on it near the candle and then start rotating the piece trying to get my target area to just faintly glow so it doesnt get floppy or sag, then i hit it with a reducing flame then with a quick oxidizing to clean the black off, then throw it in the kiln at 1050.

Thanks for the kind words about my shaping, im trying really hard to keep things all straight. on the bigger one i made the mouth by using my tube cutter and the breaking it apart wearing a kevlar glove to hold the hot side and then condensing it down. I just got a pair of diamond shears but i think i need to sharpen them because they dont bite in enough to "shock" a clean cut like my friends pair does.

TlkQ
12-29-2010, 01:17 AM
I never get "black" on my piece while fuming..? I use a small reducing flame, then hit it with oxy until it looks almost clear again and then reduce it to the desired effect.

so my plan is to buy a case of 16x3.2mm tubing, make 400 bats, try and find a distributor, profit. any tips on little things i can do to make a few more bucks on them? i was gonna do like half fumed and half clear, and then a random colored dot on each. is this a good idea or do you think i should try something else for my first prodo run? i think i can make 400 nicely shaped bats but i dont want to get stuck with 400 nicely shaped bats

TlkQ
01-02-2011, 11:47 PM
Shit, you can always take them to a festival and unload them. I'd say fume the whole bat instead of just half. You can pull a thick ass fillagre and make marbles to stick on the sides of em. Would only take a second longer than a dot of color while you're spinning them out and would probably fetch you an extra buck

Boozeclues
01-03-2011, 12:29 AM
yeah sorry i worded that wrong i meant like fume 200 and like leave 200 clear because some people dont like fume. I thought about doing little marbles with a little imploded frit and perhaps a little horn or something. the filagre sounds like a good idea too.

other stuff i was thinking about was matching the color of the dots and then trying to coil the mouth or the bowl with that color, guess ill have to try some of this next time im behind the torch.

im just really nervous about doing this because its been all fun till now and i have no idea how much to even ask for something. I know alot of people say figure out how many you make in a hour and then figure out how much money you want to make a hour then make the price of your pieces fit that but im not worried about money per hour id just like maybe 4-5 bucks each?? i dont know maybe they arent even worth that or maybe they are worth more. Bah! lol i need a safety break!

boombonicglassstudio
01-03-2011, 09:39 AM
boozeclues the wrap on the bowl mouth or anything similar is refferedto as a lip wrap also use reducing flame for fuming when i fume i use a reducing flame and i spray enough to where i see it on there then i shape my piece no burning in and oxy off and hit it with a reducing flame to bring it back thats extra work. remember anything you save on time your making extra $$. and go ahead and make 400 onies its great practice by the time your done you will be making a fast and clean onie repitition is key in prodo work. and where i am at those sell for 5 bucks wholesale. but defin great looking glass and keep it up

Boozeclues
01-04-2011, 02:06 AM

Currently I melt as much as I can. Use the side of my paddle, which is a small one oly about 3/16 thick. marver it on the edge of that a bit and add glass and melt in. I know there has got to be a better way. but I have not found a vide or walk though on contrition yet. maybe I'm not looking at the right thing.

Albino Sasquatch
01-17-2011, 08:38 PM
all you do is make sure your puty is strait and pinner flame where you want the constriction and then just melt it in and slowly push in with you hands like a maria but only go as fast as the glass is melting in. you will have to get it soupy hot and see it condencing in on its self that when you just keep going till the whole is a little bigger than you want it, thats when you pull it out and keep spinig. maybe give a quick puf if the whole is closing to small on you.

Boozeclues
01-17-2011, 09:01 PM
there certianly seems to be alot of ways to do a constriction. as i said earlier i just put a tube in the flame where i want the constriction and spin it kinda fast. Thats about it. get it nice and hot but not too hot that it gets floppy. if you do it wrong and it bends roll it flat on your marver then continue. If you rolled it on the marver make sure you heat it back up or youll have all sorts of chill marks

AYHEM

it seems to go faster to me when i spin realy slow and use a push pull (slight!!!) method then just angle it use gravity to move glass. remember the faster you spin glass the more it wants to expand and get bigger so by slowly spinning your melting it into itself not throwing it outward also gravity and angle play a key role in speed of restrictions i heat on the top of flame with a down toward the bowl kinda like this / just not as steep an angle more 45 degrees. just my way that i found works best for me . hope you can pull and use something that helps outta it.

Cool , when I started doing them I did double flares. Worked one side then, flipped it around, because thats the way the guy I was working for did em. I'll never do that again. Never got what they were worth, still don't really. (since most imports are iso they really drove the price down.)

I like the half and half style, and you can usually get the same for them as full iso.

Honestly man, I opened up this read, read the first page worth of posts, then skipped to the last and just about shit myself... I LOVE seeing these threads when you can see someone progress right from the very get go.

I probably should've taken more pictures of my beginner stuff... (or maybe not haha!)

Glad to hear you have had some luck with the stores too... I'll be making my first sales calls fairly soon. Right now I'm blowing glass for some other guys, making their prodo line. I'm a couple weeks away from moving into my own place with a nice tight spot for a workroom where I can start to put together my own line! Aw yea!

Yes Im still on the lynx, And I almost never tried it either, Few of the posts about frit on here people said it was a color that always cracked. I was prepared to avoid it but I decided I was going to try every striking color that NS makes. Maybe I got a good batch or something but it has never checked on me.

I would def recommend trying it.

Aurora eh? That color is the devil for me haha. It always looks really really cool while I'm working it ISO frit style but always comes out of the kiln brown. Even after a 800-1150-800-1150 strike cycle

yeah some of the colors that self fume seem to get muddy after kiln striking, Id have that happen to me a lot with blue caramel frit.

Dude, your progress is crazy good! Your frit looks great and sunk in proper, you got those constrictions down pat, and those two-piece things are pretty awesome, especially for the time you've got so far. Keep it up, you'll be getting into those heady pieces before you know it! I see you're in the Chicago-land area, if you're ever hitting up the Quad cities, let me know. We could probably trade a few tricks, which is my favorite thing to do regardless of experience level. I've had mixed results with Aurora as well. Cracks on inside-out but does fine with surface work. Actually, a pod rolled in Aurora ends up with a really nice granite-looking texture, I've found. Definitely keep posting, very curious to see where you'll go next.

That last pastel colored spoon is off the hook Booze! The mib really sets it off. The cobalt sherly is a nice one too. Those bends are tricky, I've yet to get those. Keep em coming...

After read Craig Lewis's tutorial in The Flow I got inspired to try some face pipes. I've been making a lot of different faces, trying to make each one a little different.

Awesome work!! Thanks for sharing your progression it was a great read and I look forward to seeing future work. If you don't mind me asking how do you like using the single m-15 on the lynx? I run a lynx on tanked oxygen currently but the more I learn the more money i spend on oxygen. Basically I want to use my torch more and an oxycon may help me do that. Do you mind telling me a little more about your experience with the performance of your lynx running off the one m-15 concentrator. Does the holding tank help? Thanks man keep posting!!!

It works but I wouldn't recommend it anymore.

You get most of your torches capability but when the tank runs out your basically stuck and have to garage your work and wait for it to fill back up.

Its really aggravating. Im buying a 2nd m-15 as soon as I can.

how well does it work without the holding tank and how long does it last and take to fill back up. Im sorry for all the questions its just a hard decision for me money is so tight I just want to be able to torch more.
thank you for answering my previous questions it helps alot.

Without the holding tank you wont have enough power to use your blue knob. It takes about 5-10 mins to fill up a 11 gallon tank. Working like this requires a lot of planning. Especially when working colors that require a oxidizing flame.
